THE PACIPIG MAIL FIGHT. » ~ Panama Wins and Mr, Park An- nounces the Victory. EXCITEMENT IN THE STOCK MARKET. ‘turious Correspondence — The New Ticket. Whenever the Pacific Mail Steamship Company has Deen discussed recently in Wall street the bulls and bears have taken sides either with Trevor W, Park aud the Panama Railroad interest, or with Jay Gould aad the Union racific combination, The courts have been kept busy in the mterest of one or the other contest- | ant, injunction and mandamus have been almost daily issued, and the stock has been the reigning sensation, 2S well as the football of the Exchange speculators. | Yesterday, howe’ all uncertainty was dissipated in rogurd to the victor by the meeting which took place in the company’s office in this city, at wuich a quorum of the directors (impossible for several days to procure) Was present, consisting of the followiug persons:— Reorge Forrest, James D. Smith, Charles J. Osborne, Rufus Hatch, and Captain Riley, It was agreed at this meeting that a regular election of directors should be held on the Slst of sts month, and that the books of transfer should be closed at the Union Trust Company on the 25th. instant, The Inspectors of Wlection up- pointed were Messrs, P. ©. Van Seliaick FP. Shire ley, and Lawrence R. Jerome, with alternates Gen G, M. Dodge, John C. Wyman, and Jobn K. Alexander, That a quorum was preseut at ail was couceded to be | A TRIUMPH YOR THE PANAMA PALTY, as they had, under the leadership of President Park, persistently fought the Gould or inside interest. One Of the oldest of the steamship company directors tola the writer that the position was (hig:—The Ciyde-Park | party have defeated Jay Gould alter one of the stoutest fights on record, by securing a majorily of the stuck, Gould stubbornly resisted this, not only by free pur- Shases but by evory trick and device known to that apecutator, Now, ho does not care so much to be Deaten as he docs to huve it published, for, hke the politician who eaid ho did not mina dying, but hated to be laid out, so Gould disliked being ‘aid out,” and he has lost in this case a great deal of that prestige which 18 so valuable to an operator who desites many followers. When aman has so many schemes which the public can either mar or assist by witbuolding their support or giving it, it w Il readily be scen what a de- feat the termination of this Pacific Mat) war has been to bim. Now, Gould has hitherto opposed any atiempt jo hold an election, on the plea that tho present directors must be guuranteed the payment of certain moneys they had advanced to the company; but the opposing parties were aware that disinterested capitalists had secured themselves by an issuo of $2,000,000 of bonds ut flity cents on the dollar, and they very properly demanded to see the books of the company, to xnow what portion was | honestly charged to the steamship company and to dis- | cover What was fraudulent and exorbitant, As the case how stands and the Clyde party go into power they | will audit all claims, pay what ure just and cancel the bonds, which never should have been issued.
