» FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Further Weakness in Coal Stocks—The Market Dull and Tending Lower. Government Bonds Sieady and Dull—Railway Bonds Quiet—Money on Call 3 Per Cent—The Bank Statement. 1 Sa Wan Street, } Saronpay. May 20—3 P.M. Scenes change as quickly on the Stock Exchange as they do ina pantomime, and “realms of ecstatic bliss” shilt into “back attics of pandemonium’ with acelerity that takes one’s breath away. The glare of the limo light und the glitter of Dutch metal which flashed into prominence the Pacific mail performances of the last | two days were this morning transferred to Central and Hudson and the coal stocks, Of these specialties wo propose to say a word. While the price of the great railroad bas been hang- ing about 110 for days past it has been remarked that shares were quictly picked up at these figuros, and | that although transactions were upon a limited scale thero was no recession in the quotation, To-day, however, popular report stated the veteran Com- modore to be more than usually infirm in health. The result of this behef was to bring to market an unusual guantity of stock—some 10,000 shares in all— which wero absorbed by a representative of Mr. V derbilt’s brokers as fast as they appeared at the stan- dard price of 110, as we have remarked above. figure, or somewhat better, even, the security closed, though the stock was sparingly offered on seller's op- tions of 108 for sixty days—a bait which did not even elicit a nibble, Some, indeed, thought they traced these purchases to the Forty-seventh street Mephistophiles and a desire to cover his long outstand- Ing short line; but there can be no question that sick or well the Ancient Mariner is still able to mount his hobby and prove to the Stock Exchange that, unlike | Lear, he is anytiing bat A poor, infirm, wenk and despised old man, Delawaro and Lackawana and New Jersey Central came up smiling to the scratch, bruiser of the P. R., but were knocked out of time Vetore their hands had been up an hour. Opening at 105, Delaware and Lackawanna sold down to 10255 cash, with seller's option thirty and sixty days of from 1 a 13, below the regular price, though there was a slight rally to 103 at the close, New Jersey Central's highest point was 8419, but It received “one for his nob’? in aimost the first round, tnd came to earth at 83, with scarcely any passes in tho way of transactions worth speaking of. During the sane time the stock was offered at nearly 3 per cent under the eash price on seller’s sixty options, a pro- ceeding which is a good deal like striking a maa when he is down and has no friends, which seems to be the case with the New Jersey coal carrier, No doubt large amounts of these hitherto favorite securitics have been sold out by holders for invest- ment, who, perceiving a slim chance for dividends in the future, have followed the example ot the cunning rats in the fable, and deserted the sinking ship. Among these rodents arc quoted the names of Moses Yaylor, Samuel Sloan and the Astor estate. Even Delaware and Hudson, which bas been keeping Asti upper lip, as becomes a ten per cent dividend payer, begins to show signs of debility in the dribbting onto the market of fractional shares ata decline of 108 to 10634. The conrage of investors seems to be oozing ‘ont tiko Bob Acres’, and it 1s to bo hoped with as pru- | dential reeuits. Thero was no quorum again this morning at the weeting of Pacific Mail directors, which make the mat- tor look still more like a put up job to avoid an elec- tion, and an ultimate handing over of the company’s aseets to Gould, Dillon & Co., under foreclosure proceed. | ings. Apropos of the above there occurred a sudden Dounce in Union Pacitic to 62 and a failing back to 605%, which was as unaccountable as are the back leaps of an untamed mustang. Lake Shore and Western Union wero to all intents and purposes out of to-day’s speculations, cxbibiting a fair show of strength for the greater part of the ses- sion, but falling off at the end and closing weak at prices to be found below. A report of further reduc- tion in freights and tariff for messsges, added to m- formation, true or false, that the Commodore had a turn for the worse, helped to depress these stocks, The close of the market offered a weak and feverish Btate of things, which the great medicine men of the Bolrd will have to look after on Monday.
