~TINANGLAL AND COMER ML | The Stock Market Lively—A Buzz in Pacifio Mail, GOLD STEADY AT ll2 3-4 Money Freely Supplied at 3 and 3 1-2 Per Cent—The Coal Stocks Lower—Goveru- ment Bonds Quiet and Firm-- Railway Bonds Steady. a “Wars Sruxer, } Tauaspar, May 18—0 P. OPM. ‘The secret rites of Eleusis were transformed to the Stock Axchange to-day, and the mysteries that envel- oped the course of Pacific Mail engrossed the attention ofthe board soothsayers, To such an extent, too, that ‘he remainder of the market was comparatively neg- lected, and prices swayed up and down as the rise or {all of the ruling favorite controlled them. At thevery Commence: mt it was ovident that the interest of the day was to cevtre iu the steamship specialty, for, sterting. of at 214% it sold steadily up with unimportant set backs to 24%, which point it reached at abdut half-past one o’clock under the registration of very extensive transactions. At this hour the tide turned and ran the counter way with even greater velocity, carrying eighte and quar- ters before it like straws upon a mill race, until the price marked 19%. From this figure the stock rallied 0 214, and eventually closed at 20% bid. Such ts ie bistory as a matter of bare quotations, Its story, however, in respect to its manipulation, the people concerned and the reasons thereof, is not so clear, and ‘@ great degree is shrouded in the mystery we have ludead wo. it appears pretty certain that the tontest for control of the next election (which we may designate as the ‘Battle of the Proxies”) was con- sidered as by no means assured to either the Gould or Yark faction, Consequently there arose a steady de- anand for the stock at incroasing prices and a borrow- {og inquiry for transfer purposes that soon netted a ‘bonus of 1g per cent over night to such holders as were sontent to lend. When the price reached 243g, how- “ever, Gould appeared through bis brokers, throwing masges of stock on the market and breaking the price suddenly down to 19%, At this the Park party putin ‘an appearance, took all the stock offered by the enemy (some 10,000 shares) at from 20 to 21 and ‘at the close of business remained masters of the field with a bid on the floor of 20% for 500 shares more, Why Gould suid and Park bought constitutes the mys- tery; and this 1s the way street gossip solves it. It is ‘wad that the former individual becoming assured about midday that he coula control the election, provided no further transfers wore made in favor of the Park inter- est, determined to close the books to-morrow morn- ing, ana thus effectually shut out bis rival. This being decided upon, the shares which he had purchased and transferred into his own name being Bo longer of use for election purposes, wore thrown upon the market with a double advantage of obtaining Mp-top prices and of saddling Mr. Park with the load, fe latter operator buying them for the impossible pur- pose of transfer to-morrow. On the other hand it is quite as sapiently stated that Gould sold out because he knew that he was beaten, and that the closing of the boos previous to the ten days bofore the election (which occurs on the Sist inst.) was prohibited by the bylaws of the company. 1¢ does not appear that any action has been taken to suspend theso rules, as the meetings called for yesterday and again for this morn- ing failed to be held, tor want of a quorum. At any Fate it “is a very pretty quarrel as it stands,” and the Boerd is indebted to its occurrence asa grateful diver- sion to the prevailing stupidity of the market. Union Pacific weakened off to 593; from 60% at the dpeping, on sales of some 2,000 shares and under a fear that the loss of contro! i Pacific Mail would affect the stock disastrously. Western Union was somewhat inclined to lower tigures under the hostile pronuncia- mento of the rival company, though it stiffened up at the end; and Lake Shore may bo dismissed with the game remark, though its fluctuations were influenced more by the reports of missionaries from the Pacific Mail country than {tom any other reasons. The moat hopelessly and stubbornly feeble security of the day was New Jersey Central, which settled down from 90}, to 863{, only recovering to 87 at the end, ‘The condition of the coal trade is so unsatisfactory and prospects for future dividends so uncertain that invest. mont shares are gradually finding their way te market and are sold at rapidly declining figures, since they fail to meet with the support which tho short interest offers in highly speculative fancies. Californiw.....++ Segregated Belcher Hale & Norcross A NEW KLEMEST IN THE MUNINO WOULD. Reference has been made tn these columns tv a new process, known as uh refractory gold and silver ores, and which, it is claimed, will revolutionize the present methods in that it willaavoa vast amount of material that has hitherto been regarded as reiuse or has entirely caped, and will largely add to the production and profit | of the mines wherein it may be applied. As much in. terest, not only in New York bus other Eastern cities, is beginning to be attached to miaing properties we quote from a California paper the foliowing account of tho construction and use of the Works which havo just beon opened in Grass Valley:—-The whole ap- paratus ig cntirely differeut’ trom anything in use before, and consists of a tur. nace designed to roast at a high temperature refrac tory ores In order to reduce the noblo metals to a pure state belore amalgamation. The second operation is treating the roasted vre im a revolving apparatus of octagon shape, provided with equal capacity to « five- stamp battery. Quickmiver, hot water and some cheap chemicals yot unnamed are placed in the cviia- dors with the roasted ores, the heads of tho oylinders are tightly closed, and the pulverizing apparatus is set in motion at the rate of ten revelutions to the minate, Acylindrical weight of 250 pounds in each cylinder falls twice upon the ore Iu every revolation, puiveriz- Ing it to impalpable powder, while at the samo time amalgamation i% going on, Afi ix hours of this treatment the cylinders are opened and the pulp is ejected through @ pipe iuto a separator, where it i met by a powertul stream of water at the bottom of the scp@pator vat, which keeps the pulp in active motion, The amal- gam falls inw @ receptacle at the bottom of the separator and the slums float at the top. ‘These pass thro @ rotary square box, pro- vided with copper plates to catch the smaliest particle of ainalgam, if such could possibly escape, The amal. Yryer process,” for reducing | 3% gam is immediately drawn off and vaaninae and in twelve hours from the ume the quartz is first put in the furnace the result in bullion is obtained, varying from 90 to 96 per cent of the assay value of the ore, and that effected at a very amall cost, With {ree ore the furnace 1s omitted, as the pulverizer is sufficient without it, There was great enthusiasin among the visitors as the machinery started. The octagon pul- verizer moved off as perfectly as though it bad been used for years, There was but one sentiment heard— namely, that a revolution in mining bad been inauga- rated aud the basy times of Valifornia would return.”” GBSERAL MINING LETELLIGENCR It is understood that Germany, as well as other European countries, intends sending a corps of mining engineers and experts to this country during the present year, and that their field of operations isto embrace nearly ail our mineral States and Territories, and especially those which produce gold and silver. Owners of mining properties aro felicitating them- selves apon the prospect which this fact presents of obtaming European capital In Central City, Col, it ia proposed to organize a club forthe proper euter- tainment of these distinguished foreigners. ‘The Centenuial collection of specimeas from Colorado comprises thirteen car loads, and more are yet to come. An enthusiastic writer in one of the local papers says there never was a time in the history of that Ter- Fitory when so mach success/ul mining was being done; that almost every day we hear of new mines, pew strikes und new and better processes tor extracting the Precious motals, and that we are just beginning to ap- preciate the extent and value of our mineral resources. ‘Twenty-five additional stamps bave becn started at Black Hawk on custom ore. The receipts of Stamp Mill gold at the three banks in Central City increase at the rate of dfteen per cent per month, A Mr. Paul, an experimental miner, bas invented and is working ® process which he asserts will produce from 10 to 100 percent more metal than any known system of amalgamation operated at the same expense. Aparty by the name of Harrison, located at Santa Kosa, bas quite another method, by which he claims to be able to make from ores containing the base metals bullion 950-1,000 fine. The entire cost of the machinery necessary fora twelve stamp mill, inclusive of chemi- ‘cals, is placed at $1,500. There seems to be no doubt in the minds of compe- tent judges that gold in paying quantities exists in the Black Hills, Of course there wili be much suffering and disappointment among the earlier seekers, most of whom go wholly unprepared for the hard life of a new country. f MEMORANDA, Aspecial Washington dospatch says that Mr. Ran- dall will make ‘argument before the Banking aud Currency Committee on Monday, in favor of bis bill providing for the coinage of $25,000,000 additional sil- ver. Senator Sherman will introduce a like measure in the Senate, Mr. Runuall saya the bill will pass the House. The Michigan Central earnings aroas follows: —Seo- ond week May, 1876, $141,637 63; second week May, 1875, $129,377 12 Inctease, $12,260 61. Making in- creage tn first two weeks in May, $34,000, It is rumored to-day that the interest on the bonds of the leased roads of the Michigan Central, which are guaragteed by the latter and due in July, will be passed, owing to the railroad war. This will probably account for the price ranging so much lower than that of the Lake Shore road, An informal meeting of four of the Pacific Mall di- rectors was held to-day, but without result. Scores of statements were made explanatory of the rapid fluc. tuations of the stock to-day, but they were contradicted, and at the close of the market the gossips were more mystified than ever.
