FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Depressed and | Prices Sagging. GOLD 1121-2 A 112 5-8. Money on Call 3 and 3 1-2 Per Cent—Gov- ernment Bonds Firm—Railway Bonds Easier—-Coal Stocks Unsettled— Foreign Exchange Steady. Yo arene Wart Sree, \ Wapyxspay, May OP, M. It yosterday’s stagnant market was not exactly a weather breeder it ut least created a breeze to-day—an 4 wind that blew nobody good but the bears, who prob- ably regarded it as the gentlest of zephyrs. Opening prices of the usual speculatives were not a whit worge than the closing prices of the day before, but they speedily commenced to weaken under the pressure of various circumstances, as does a sick man with a complication of maladies, Lake Shore made a bold start at 54, but almost imme- diately fell away under the report of a more unfavora- ble condition of the Commodore’s health and tho be- lief that the Osborn and Henry Smith parties were sup- plying the market with stock, The result was even- tually to carry the quotation down to 53, from which it Staggered up \{ per cent at the finish on the purchases of such ephemeral shorts as make it a rule to close up contracts with the day’s business. Western Union, which has been stubbornly firm for some days back, despite the fact that Jay Gould has been feeding the market with the cash stock purchased by him against sellers’ options, slowly gave way under the pressure, which was rendered still heavier by the delief that the rival Atlantic and Pacific concern would shortly aunounce a further cutting in rates. There 18 20 doubt that this will bo done to-morrow, and it will take the shape of a decrease of from flve to twenty-five gents per message to all points not yet reduced, and j will particularly affect the service of New York city, Brooklyn and Jersey City, as rates to and within these aces will be charged at twenty cents for ten words and one cent for each additional word, in lieu of twenty-five cents and two cents for each addi- tional word, as now prevails, This further cheapen- ing of tolls, wo learn from the best authority, is in consequence of the largely increased business and receipts which have accrued to the company from the previous reduction, Whatever may be the result to Btockholaers, there is no question but that the public will bo greatly the gainer, and itis only necessary to dstablish a confidence in the permanency of these ro- auctions to secure for General Eckert the gratitude of the community. For a wonder Union Pacific woke up from its slumber and was quite skittish for a time to the extent of some 1,500 shares of stock, This amount was marketed ona decline from 624¢ to 603g, at which figure Gould's alter ego putin an appearance and an ond to the de- sine at the same time. was so'd for Boston account. Pacific Mail, which 1s proverbially cantankerous, ex- bihited this quality to-day by selling up instead of town, it having opened at 2034 witha mse to 21i¢ at the close Shares were in demand for delivery and for the purposes of transfer, the books closing for election | on Saturday, and as high as 1-16 tho use of the stock tempicd to ve played by Jay transfer of shares which he the names of other partis. of stock stanaing in the name of W. E. Conner (Gould’s factotum) were to-day presented for transfer, when the applicant was greeted with the information that there were no blank certificates ready to be issued in place of per day was paid for the surrendered ones, and moreover thatthe proper | Mi official to sign the same was out of town; hence the noider of the stock would necessarily have to leave ‘4 and lay out of its money value or take it away without transfer, and useless to him for voting purposes, It was stated that the Governing Committee would bold a meeting this afternoon, which by resolu- tion would compel Mr, Conner, under the rules of the Board, to furnish proxies to such parties as were bond Ade bolders of stock standing in his name, Perhaps of the whole market Delaware and Lacka- wanna and Jersey Central betrayed the greatest Veakness, the former declining from 106% to 105%, ind the latter from 915; to 893s, although there was a ractional rally in the first and a one per cent recovery In the second at the close. The market closed with a slight improvement, but feverish and uncertain as to the future, THE SALES TO-DAY. The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day ag- Bregated 120,948 shares. Asan evidence of an improved feeling here in Now York toward mining investments a correspondent in- stances the case of a company which he names and which bad within a tewdays and with litte effort raised a sufficient capital for all this year’s work in two of their mines. This, however, does not conclusively establish the point sought to be made, inasmuch as the properties in question were nearly all located in the little county ot Gilpin, where there are abundant mill. ing and railroad facilities and no cash was | required for the purehase of machinery or the construction of houses, In fact, the property itself was already partially developed and was contributed by its owner, a wealthy New Yorker, who required no money, Instances like this we be- lieve to bo rare, the majority of mining properties offered here being located in remoter parts of our country and heid by parties who require large cash payments for tho land ag well as for working capital. Still we admit that there isa slightly improved fooling toward mining investments, but only the best class of properties will be noticed, and evon those must have a good New York indorsement at the start, We are long since dono with wildcat mining. THE LOUISIANA BONDS. ‘The grave questions arising trom the discussion be- fore the Governing Committee as to the admission of the Louisiana consolidated securities to the reguiar call of the Board were decided yesterday. The deci- sion is a precedent for the admission of the various State bonds, which favor has been vuinly sought by their sponsors heretofore. The Committee on Securi- ties at Large is composed of the following gentlemen :— Edward Brandon, chairman; William Lummis, Bray- ton Ives, James Weeks and W. E. Strong. The Chair- man made a report to the Governing Committee of tho fare, AVER, box Stock Exchange to the effect “that the bonds were sound,” and recommended that they be. given tho privilege of the call, whereupon tho following order was mado:—‘That the Governing Committee of the ae Exchange bas de- rivileges. of the call the now con- soliduted Louisiana eas ‘and have ordered that those issued under an act to provide for funding obligations of the State by exchange for bonds, &c., al ved Jan- uary 24, 1874, dated January 1, le to bearer 1874, payab Garenty: forty years from date, with ‘annum, coupons payable Jan yt IY, to a 299 inclusive, each tor si 000, and Noa. 1 to (os. 871 inclusive, for $500 each, to be placed on regular call Ii and ‘that bonds Nos.'1 to 3,541 Inolixive, 6 each for $100, to be called as ‘small bonds.’ ’? It seems there was some opposition to the report as finally adopted, A wetl known banker and dealer in State bonds told the Hxnaup reporter that it was a Ee thing to get the bonds on the Board, yet it would a better thing to get them off. He had, he addea, eoath city and State sixes, guaranteed bonds, on the list, and had offered them aatly to dealers, without a single bid, within ten per cent of their quoted value, The dealers in Southern bonds believe in this action of the Governing Committee in regard to Louisiana, ‘that they see a millennium dawn for Floridas, Alabamas, Georgias and ower classes now ruled off the cali for ‘various reasons, which were principally stated by the Heratp yesterday. BUSINESS TROUBLES. Messrs. George Ripley & Son, wool commission merchants, of No. 68 Pine street, have suspended pay- ment Their affuirsare involved through the failure of Messrs, Messinger & Wright, of Duane street, which ‘was announced inthis column yesterday, and whose paper they hold to the extent of $30,000. Uther causes, too, contributed to bring about tne present difficulty. Is is thought that their liabilities will amount to $150,000, The assets are not known. John J. Johnston bas been adjudicated an involun- tary bankrupt by Register N. W. Allen, of No, 152 Broadway, ou petition of his creditors.
