A THRIVING CITY SPRINGING UP. How the Work Is Done and the Progress Made. THE WATER SUPPLY. Everybody has beard how, at the impulseof a mil- Monaaire, there suddenly arose from a dreary wilder- |..games, to take piace in New York during the present est city on Long Island; and bow, owing to the epirit and enterpriso of a singlo individual, wild and rolling prairie land has been transformed into a series of blooming fields and parks. Dur- fag the lifetime of tho late Alexander 1, Stewart the growth and development of Garden City was his Goarest hope, and now that ho is dead it is doubtful whether ho has I¢ft behind him a more enduring mon- ument than that which stands equi-distant botween the Sound and the sea. There are a great many who suppose thatin the tomb of the deceased there were placed with him many a scheme unaccomplished and wany & design only partially fulfilled; and there.are others who, Unaware of the extent to which be sought the coun- sel of his associates for the successful consummation pf ail he conceived, imagine that he could not possibly leave his designs tn the hands of anotaer who would bo able to carry them on as energetically as himself, visit to Garden, City, bowever, would show even the most indifferent visitor bow mistaken are those who think thus, for nover belore in its history bas the territory presented a acone of such extraordinary activity, nor has it previously presented such a prom- Ising outlook. Judge Hilton, in carrying out the great work Je(t him by bis associate and friend, 18 displaying an energy and enterprise worthy of the. heartiost he was with the private affairs of Mr, Stewart, and cajoying more than any other man his confidence and trust, he has distributed over tho Qeids and parks and avenues a regiment of men, so that each day some change takes place, and every change is {Im the direction of improyement, TUR NRW SPIRIT. No matter in what direction the eye chances to wal dor it beholds activity and lite. Steam ploughs at one point can be seon tearing up grand avenues through fints of tangled weeds and sour grass, and at another immense rollers crush the sand, stone and gravel into hard and pleasant streets. On the one hand can be ob- served bande of laboring men adorning some untnished home, and on the other groups of other men turning up in tue sunshine tho rich loam of the plains. Great changes have been made in the large park immediately Surrounding the botel. During the spring months the burserymen have been busily engaged in planting flow- ers and.shrubs and evergreens 10 such profusion and tu such good taste that to those who remember the Park last season, and who chance to visit it this year, it will present the strongest contrast, The main street, too, which runs trom tho Park toward the east im the direc- Von of the farming lands, and thence eight miles, west. ward toward the end of the. estate, materiaily extended and improved. through Central Park is no better than a drive alon, mpact, firm and solid, afi pon tts smooth and even surtace it is almost 1m possi- bie to distinguish the impression of even the heaviest praise, Fumiliar The favorite d this superb avenue. THE AVENUES. While the operators were extending the matn street farther into the wilds of the surrounding plains they did not negleet the old thoroughfares which were con- stracted at the foundation of the city. On the contrary, they have boen particular to further improve and.adorn them, and have, tn addition to the trees formerly along 27,000 maples. Tho utmost care was taken in removing ‘(hem from the nurseries, at, with scarcely an exception, the trees are al hearty and vigorous, despite the fact that they are dis- tributed over an area of nearly 3,000 acres. RECLAIMED LANDS, Ono of the most interesting scenes to be witnessed this spring about Garden City is the reciaimmg of waste lands, Over a vast area, from snorise until sun- can be Observed team after team upturning the out in even tracts fields which will rule and productive. lanted 350 acres of corn, bp acre eat, 75 acres of barley, 400 ac wheat and 150 acres of hay, making tn all Laisa acros of marketable products raised upon what once was a bleak and barren wilderness. HANDBALL AND RACKETS. THE PROPOSED INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT AND THE PLAYERS TO PARTICIPATE. The leading handball and racket players of this city, Brooklyn and vicinity organized themselves into a Metropolitan Committee some two months ago, and they have been actively engaged T since iD arrang- ing a Centennial international tournament at the above spring. It was at first designed to open the contest on the 17th ult., but Canadian und Western players hav- ing requested the committee to postpone the mecting until Jater, so as to enable them to visit Philadelphia at the same time, the, opening will now take place on the st of June next. Tne uddress issued by the Metropolitan Committce has been warmly received in ali sections of the Union ‘and Canada by the players of handball and rackets. The Quebec, Montreal, Toronto and Lindsay papers have given considerable space to furthering the move: ment, and many recognized experts in the two games, among them Mr. Thomas Grace, tne Canadian handball champion, have announced their intention of particl- pating in the tournament. The Western newspapers are also expediting matters with zeal, aud a large num- ber of players from that section will take part in tho contest. Alderman James O'Brien, of Chicago, writes to the Now York committce that he will bring on a toam of six experts, and Cincinnati, Cleveland, Louisville and Richmond, Va., arc also organizing deputations. 8t Louis is warm in the matter, and there is @ probability of meeting here ‘those celebrated Western champious—Messrs. P. J. O’Brien, Thomas Bumbery, John Ryan and Thomas Hannifin. Toledo, Ohio, 1 in active correspondence with the managers, and will be represonted by the champion of the State, Mr. P. Shean, with Messrs. Nicholas Evoy, Martin J. Carney and others. Players from Troy were already in the field a month ago, Mr. Michael Buckley, of that place, sending the following names of contestants: on the 17th of March last:— Messrs. Edward Fitagerald, James Judgo, Timothy Lannigan, John Ryan, John O’Brien and Martin Lackey, The Metropolitan Committee announce, with much pleasare, that numerous recognized exponents of the game of handball {rom Ircland aro also expected to partic:pate in the'approaching tournament, It is still an open question whether American experts are equal in science with the adepts of tho old land, and this question will probably be settled next Juno by such widely known proficients os Mr. Butier, of county Kilkenny, Messrs, Thomas Walters and Peter Kenny, of Dublin, and perhaps by the famous Kirkham, ol Tipperary. Messra, William Tobin and John Leary, both ot Fermoy, are also expected, while Kanturk, county Cork, will be represented either by Messrs. Buckie: and Downey or the Conway Brothers. The Englis! players of “Fivea,” which is morcly the old gamo of handball, arc also interesting themselves in this tour- York committee have pot yet re- 3 of contestants from their English correspondonts, but several excellent players from there have lately arrived in this ‘city tor the Purpose of taking pare in the tournament. ‘The Metropolitan Committee desire to have it under- stood that their tonure of office is merely provisional. Their object isto arrange tho prelimimary details of the approaching contest and thon to resign the reins of direction to the General National Committee, under whose auspices the meeting next June will be held and controll The postponement of the opening day of the tournament has enabled the managers to give a much wider scope to the movemest than was orginally intended, They feel every contidence that the prizes offered in competition will be numerous and valuable. There will be, im tact, three tournaments held during the meeting—namely, at handball, American rackets und English rackets—and it {s proposod to give three prizes in each section. There will also be numerous four-handed matches, so that different States and cities may test their skill and endurance against each ower by means of their fecogmed champions. It ie advisable that the General Natiqnal Committee be formed without delay, so thatall details regarding the tournament may be arranged and published at as early a date as possible and subscriptions raised for. the prize fund, Players and amateurs of handball and rackets are requested by the Metropolitan Committee to forward their names and addresses to ‘Mr, Bernard br enone Secretary, No, 404 Madison street, New York city. “A NEW YACHT. ‘The now yacht now building at the yard of Messrs © and R.
