8 NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, MAY 4, 1876—TRIPLE SHEET, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Irregular, But a Trifle Firmer at the Close. GOLD STEADY AT Government and Railway Bonds Quiet—In- vestment Shares Easier—The Railway War in Progress—Foreign Exchange Strong. 112 7-8 ——_—_-—__— Wrovespay, May 3—6 P. MM. + Polo, originating in India, has worked its way west- ward, lke the star of empire, tho measles, or Horace Greeley’s young man. Jt promises to add to American pluck, develop the biceps of muscular Christians and generally shame the devil, who hates tho ‘mens sana in corpore sano” as he doés holy water. It is a great mistake, however, to suppose that polo, or its counter- feit presentment, has not for along time been played at the Stock Exchange. tis true operators do not avail themselves of ma- terial mallets, balls of deal and Liliputian horseflesh, but they nevertheless hammer away with options and drive stocks into acorneron the mount of a margin which often proves a sorry jade indeed. There was not & vory lively game to-day, and the goals made wero achieved under a linited display of dexterity and skill, In fact, the moderate interest exhibited attached to Lake Shore and Western Union en- tirely, the rest of the list remaming at Bearly yesterday’s quotations, as checrless as a ehurchyard and as desolate as a whole orphan asylum. There was a perplexing peculiarity about tho dealings {a Western Union, which created much scratching of beads among both bulls and bears, for Mr. Gould moved tm such “‘a mysterious way his wonders to perform” Mat opinions were equally divided as to whether ho Werothe greater seller or greater buyer. The fact ‘ppears to be that ho was simply endeavoring to place bis short line on a seller sixty basis at a concession of two per cent or so from the cush price. 1n view of the fact that po more than two per cent is paid to borrowers for carrying, and of the annoyance of a possible daily shange inthe loans, time options bearing six per cent Interest are decidedly preferable at this time, This seems to be about the gist of the matter, and it is probable that these transactions were simply a par- chase of cash stock against au equal amount of sellers’ options. Lake Shore turned up with a disgraceful black eye at the very start, for the price then made—52';—was tho worstof the day. It hada drunken stagger through \he most of business hours, but straightened up toward the close on an improvement of about one point, Stoeks of the anthracite coal companies were dull and neglected, though there was a tendency to some- what lower prices, There is, however, some little stir mm the ebares of the Consolidation Coal Company of Maryland, which from appearances may flare up (as deems befitting a bituminous coal stock) in such a man- ner asto scorch the bears who have gone short of se- Watt Streer, \ curity. Tho matter having been commented upon by a portion of the daily press, we i taken some trouble to get information Irom reliable sources, presuming, as usual, that thero were two sides to the story. It appears that the Con- polidation Coal Company was, until a few weeks since, the owner of nearly the entire stock of the Cumber- Jand and Pennsylvania Railroad, During the pendency ofa bill in the Maryland Legislature to reduce tolls on coals carried over the above line (the title of the road being specified in the act) the coal company effected an out-and-out purchase of the entire concern. Consequently the legislation was directed against a corporation which no longer existed; and, thouzh the Dill was passed and signed by the Governor, it is claimed to be about as formidable as Don Quixote’s tilt againstthe windmills. Meantime certain parties have im- proved the occasion by getting short of the stock on seller 60 options to the extent of some 10,000 shares, most of which have been purchased by President Gar- rett, of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. How the deliveries are to be made at the expiration of the con- tencts 1s not so clear, ns little or no stock is offered for galeand shares for delivery are difficult to borrow. The interest in Central and Hudson which existed a few days since has mostly died out, and is only evinced by some few snies on seller 60 options at 2 per cent below the cash price. The full report shows that, exeept by a large reduction in its floating debt, amounting to $1,334,212, no dividend could have been paid out of last year’s business. The report was variously interpreted by the street, it being somewhat muddled. The elec- tion took place at Cleveland to-day. MILWAUKEE AND ST.
