FINANCIAL AND COMMERCL | —e—__— Stocks, Irregular, Feverish, Active and in Some Instances Higher at the Close. GOLD FIRMFR AT 1122 58 A 12 Investment Securities Steady—Government and Railway Bonds in Fair Request and Firm—Money on Call 3 1-2 and 4 Per Cent. Wav. Srreet, Monpay, May 1—6 P. M. Stocks wero “taken and weil shaken’? to-day, like a vial of physic from achemist’s shop. Shaken down at first and up afterward, until the mixture was ‘thick ‘and slab” and possessed of properties purgative to pulls and bears alike. Central and Hudson was the great feature of business, and its lineaments were portrayed under as many a pose of grievous fall and hilarious rise as though it had been Dom Pearo or a popular actor under the hands of a photographer, The con- « trariety of earthly events is universally acknowledged, and was specially shown to-day in the course of the security referred to, Mr. Vanderbilt for ton days past has been by popular report m evory stage of dissolution, only failing to die outright. He has been feeble, failing and at death’s door, and still his favorite stock remained steadily at its normal quotation. To- day he is stronger, better and snapping his fingers at the enemy, and Central and Hudsou plunges down some four per cent. Quite as quickly it turns the other way and more than recovers what it had lost, While board members are trying to guess what it all means, vhese are the facts:—Opening at Saturday's closing price of 112, and ignored, as usual, as an 1active mem- ber of the speculative list, it speedily engaged the attention of Gould’s brokers, who made a desperate attempt to break the price under free offeriugs of cash Btock and seller's option at 4 to 1 per cent below regular quotations, So well did the onset succeed that the stock speedily sold down to 108 regular, and was pffered at 1074, seller 60; at this point, however, the Commodore's brokers put in an appearance (apparently under orders from headquarters) and the tables were quickly turned. The rise that ensued was even more rapid than the fall had been, and in a very short time the stock on purchare of an unimportant umount of shares mounted to 112}, or 34 percent higher than the opening. There were Various sur- mises as to the reason of this sharp and sudden squall. It was stated thai a large amount of foreign stock was to be offered for sale, and that Gould getting wind of the fact generously assisted to “help it down,” while at the same time he bettered the opportunity for covering his hopeless shorts. Some were of opinion that the report of the Commodore's return to health ‘was only a delusion and a snare, while others again figured out, satisfactorily to themselves if not to their bank accounts, that the decline was due to the railway contest and to the new competition which would start up on the opening of the Erie Canal. Whichever be true, if either, it was evident that the gest of the market was willing to play at “follow my leader” and to take its cue from the star of the day. Consequently the ups and downs, and at the end there were more of tue former than of the atter, were instigated by ‘the erratic course of the favorite. Lake Shdre opened at 5334, sold down to 52% and back again to first figures, Western Union, from 64}{, dropped to 632, and rallied back again to the starting point, while Pacific Mail and Northwestern romained comparatively neglected at fluctuations of 3, fol percent. In Michigan Central, transactions were anusualiy large, and prices ranged from 491; to 4843, and back again to 60';, the closing quotation being at the semi-centenniai figures. ‘The Atlantic ana Pacific Telegraph Company, which Seems to daily secrete additional vevom in its strife with the Western Union, has reared its crest defiantly again in a jurther reduction of twenty per cent in tariff charges to the cities of the great West and distant parts of this State. What, with the newly purchased cle- phant on their hands in the shapo of the Atlantic and Soathera lines and the forced reduction of rates, as compelled by the vigorous oppo- sition, the chance of a resumption of dividends on the part of Western Union is not inviting. Coal stocks, of the anthracite kind, were steady and without feature. Consolidation is quoted at 404 on sales of a few hun- dred shares on Baltimore and Ohio Railroad account, ‘nto the strong box of which this security is slowly rifting. The animation of the market was confined to the carly drop and late rally, business closing up with con- siderable firmness, As to its course to morrow we have no “Old Prob,” of financial proclivities to give us even a guess upon.
