y FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Dull and Steady and Specu- lation Featureless. ’ GOLD 114 3-8 A114 1-8 _ Moitey on Call 3 and 4 Per Cent—Government Bonds a Fraction Lower and Railway Bonds Steady—Foreign Ex- change Firm, Wan Sraeet, } Moxpay, March 20—6 P. Many yeara ago the writer drifted into a journey frem Cairo to Suez per camel. There was a maximum Of gand and a minimum of sandwiches, and the oases that fell in the way were as infrequent and unsatisfac- tory as the half developed pustules in a smallpox _ patient. There was turbid water from a tepid spring and bitter beer from Bass, and beyond that—nothing. Likening the stock market to a desert, there was scarcely a green spot in all to-day’s proceedings, .Dul- ‘ness was as unlimited as an Arabic plain and as monoto- dous as a departmental road in France. By chance or by agreement the contending forces which were con+ spicuous Jast week seem to be resting upon their arms to-day, and fluctuations in stocks have rested also, Beyond the mere trading for eighths and quarters, which is as much the part of the petty stockjobber’s vxistence as is bis matutinal cocktail, nothing offered Itself prominently to give feature to the day. The favorite speculatives gained somewhat at one time on opening prices, but eventually feil off and closed gen- wally under best quotations. Western Union, despite its recen$ decline, still seems to be looked upon with the eye of sus- picion, for sellers’ options were freely offered at 3% «per cent beléw the cash price, but found few purebasers at that. In regard to other stocks ordinarily active there is absolutely nothing to remark; steadiness and dulness were their characteristics, and Mhere was simply an apparent looking to the future, Uke Miller for the millennium, or Micawber waiting for yomething to turn up. Regarding the dome of St, Peter’s, Sir Charles Cold- Stream sapiently remarked that ‘there is nothing in 1.” Viewing the day’s market, we can simply echo Bir Charles. There was no end of ‘sows’ ears,’’ but Attle demand for ‘‘silk purses,” and manufacturers in this line of business seem for the moment to have “struck work,’” ‘THE SALES TO DAY.
