_ light, This genera: movement dis THE GAS REVOLT. EXTENT OF THE UPRISING—THE METER AL- LEGED TO BE A CONTRIVANCE FOR DECEP- TIoN—Gas OVERTHROWN BY KEROSENE— GRIRVANCES OF CONSUMERS TOLD IN PLADY WORDS—FALL IN VALUE OF GAS SHARES. The inquiries made by reporfers of the Heratp in diferent quarters of the city lead to the conclusion that the revolt of consumers against the rule of the gas companies is more general and determined than at first supposed, The people seem to have fairly risen against what they deem gross imposition and tyranny. They appear to be very much in earnest in tho determination to overthrow the do- minion of King Gas and substitute in its place the sway of kerosene, Protests, complaints and remon- etrances are at an end, and now action of a very prac- tucal character has taken their place, The measure- ment by the meter 4a the chief grievance, but ‘unreasonable rates and inferior illumination come next in order, The kerosene lamp now takes position where it was unknown before, and a large proportion of the community congratulate themselves that un couth and overbearing agents will no longer be privi- leged to enter their stores and dwellings without as much ag saying “By your leave,” The matter of a State meter inspector, who is charged with the duty: of testing these contrivances when requested by a citizen, and see that the companies keep at their works instru- ments for that purpose, is a protection of little value, The State Inspector is paid salary and expenses by the gas companies, By an act passed at the last session (1875) of the Legislature, it is provided that no payment shali be made by the State Comptroller to the Inspector of Méters, “except till an amount equal to such pay- mente shall be received by him from the gas companies {of the city of New York) or some of them.”? Such a Jaw, it is evident, ts not framed in the right spirit for protection of the public. ‘ EXTENT OF THE REBELLION, It would be idle for the gas companies to ignore the goneral prevalence of the rebellion against what the public have come to consider extortion, The people have resolved to combat the oppression by making use of afar less expensive light. .Kerosene and other burning flaids may and probably will rise in value, but at double their present cost they will be cheaper than gas at its present price and afford a more satisfactory light. The rates of gas are being reduced on every side, Dut still greater concessions must be made. Tho stock of the companies is going down, and it is under- stood that at least 1,500 meters have been returned in this city alone by consumers during the past four or five weeks. Thus the rebellion against monopoly, dis- courteous treatment and grasping stockholders spreads and deepens, with no indication at all that we have the jast of 1. The more this matter is examined the more serious it appears to be for the gas companies, * IMPROVED BURNERS REQUIERD, Making all allowances for the protests of consumers, it seems that much depends in the byt arent quality of ag and the amount consumed upon the nature of the hiss employed, The illuminating power of the fiuid is greatly controlied by the form of the burner. It is a matter of common observation that gas may be deprived of its most valuable effect if made to issue with great velocity from an orifice, and it is admitted that great loss or waste foliows tn this manner. The a8 goes through, but is not burned with advantage. The companies lose nothing by this escape, but rather 80 that the matter of good burn is to them of fit im moment, It is their duty, however, to furnish proper burners and at such figures as would make them the cheapest and the best. But the question arises:—Will they seriously and honestly undertake to dosof Acon- suiner whose opinion on the subjoct was asked yester- day y replied, “ud “Judging by the past, I do not think they ever will, It may occur that promises to that eflect will be mage at the presebt juncture, but they will be made only to be broken. The companies have been too long beige revelli! jn heavy dividends at the expense of the public and of the rights of the public to be trasted. A general discontinuance of the use of ga: for twelve acts is the remedy I support and wilf ob- serve." AN ENGRAVER’S OPINION. Jn some ostablishments gas is introduced to be used as occasion may demand. A steel engraver doing busi- ness in the lower part of the city was addressed as to howhe found bis gas and gas bills. Ho said, “The meter is in nowise accurate. It is like all other mechanical and scientific contrivances, subject to de- pore, sein but its errors are alway made to tell against thé consumer, They belong to. the companies and they exercise the right to put them up and remove ‘them as they deem fit, and they insist also upon a deposit of money before serving theif customers.- The inspec- tion of meters is not be voersinad | The empioyé comes and makes his examination in the absence of the parties to be charged, and, without delay, a demand is made for the sum fixed bY bim, whet it ts right or wrong: If not paid the supply is cut off uncere- moniously. In vain a mistake of the calculation or Pompey of the moter are alleged, the dial of tho one and the figures of the other are ‘Uh only answer deigned by ingolent underlings to tho ple aed of the consumer, Itis. not very long 1 used gas daring the. greater partof a month in the fall, and the account when presooted. A short ‘time setth power it was winter now, ie had no necessity for ‘using any light for weeks. When, lo and behold, Tou was inade oUutfora much greater sum than for the period during which I had consumed ten times moro Remonstrance was useless. I bad either to pay the money or have the meter, removed,” RESULTS OF THE REVOLT. The New York companies, it seenfe, have yielded a little, but, as stated before, not to suck an extent as to satisty one ina thousand of consumers, The Phila- delpnia corporations have substituted $2 15 for $2 30, but the Centennial enthusiasts are not content to od more than $2 per 1,000 ce gd feet and to got a far ter article into the ba In mirc Ben and Ho. boken the tarifls have = reduced. In Brooklyn tho authorities are considering th a Br of substi- tuting kerosene for gas in the public buildings, and in every part of the city the feeling is to stand imposition no longer. The meters are being returned by the score in the City of Churches, and there gas stocks have falien in avery dec'ded manner. The Boston papers state that every day witnesses the opening of a new lamp store, The Ci Bulletin announces that the demand is great for these articles, and as many ena mri bave been made in them, rendering em much more efficient, ornamental and safe, they in getting to be exceedingly popu: They are wow generally used for the study and work tables. The city of Lynn, it is said, hag lately ‘resolved to abandon’ the use of in lighting the streets and to © substitute Ecrosone, both for economy and the more satisfactory of the explana- tion given by the manyfacturors that rt is not either to the fact that the meow can stand imposition no longer or to the superiority of oi] that the tailing off in gas consumption (which they admit) is to be attributed, but to the depression of business and a desire to cut down expenses in every possibie way. The people having Jong submitted are now determined ‘:o get square with the gas companies.” They have permitted the streets to be tory up at the will and pleasure of these corporations for their own bans eens who proceeded upon the principle that there were no re- ciprocal obligations on their parts to the communit, except to exact all the money they could from 4 ty and that in as insvlent and unjust a manner as if they (the gas companies) wore masters of the city. The Jatter acted toward consumers in selling the commodity they manufactured in the spirit— “If you don't like it don’t take it; leave it behind you.” They are now, according to what the Henao reporters can learn, reaping their reward, A GLIMPSE OF RAPID TRANSIT, THE COMMISSIONERS REPORT FAVORABLY ON THR THIRD AVENUR ROUTE—THE REPORT SUBMITTED TO THE SUPREME CouRT, The Rapid Transit Commissioners have at last made their report, which will to-day be handed by the coun- sel of the York Elevated Railway Company, in whose fayor it has been made, to Judges John R. Brady, Davis and Daniels, in the General Term of tho Supreme Court, The Rapid Transit Commission con- sists of Messrs, O, H. Graham, ex-president of the Wakil National Bank, have. beeu elicited through the exam- ination of the ‘cappor,”? who “roped iu’? Grabam, on the occasion of one of his visits to this city. Grabam, it appears, met tho ‘‘capper” at a race at Fleetwood Park, in the fall of 1871, and, after the day’s sport had terminated, they proceeded together to the faro bank of Briggs and Moody, who then kept an establishment at No. 16 West Twenty-fourth street. Grabam lost $1,500 that night, and within a few days thereafter had deposited about $23,000 in the faro bank. He drew acheck on the Walkill National Bank a tho amount, and certified it. He was then drugged the gambiers and kept in that condition fer Se a eck could be presented at bis bank. Norton, the cashier of the Walkill Bank, refused to honor the check, and Graham was eventually allowed to go home. The gamblers, however, were angry at being unable to collect the $23,000, and decide ty “fleece” Grabam, which they did, in the following manner :— Briggs, apparently incensed at the brutal manner in which Graham had been treated, called upon the bank president at Middletown and told Lim, with tears in his that he (Bri pe), too, had been defrauded out of gome money b; food'y and the ‘capper’? who were in collusion, and he was anxious to ggt even with them if he could,’ He stated that be was a dealer in the gam: bling house, and promised Graham that if he would again visit the house he would be furnished with $10,000 to bet with, 48, belng dealer, could easily let Graham kuow weet card wo bet on and win, To this proposition eign eagerly assented, and in a few days again put ii ance at No, 16 West Twenty- fourth stroet. eo arrived there he was informed by Briggs that Moody had unexpectedly come to the house that day, ae it would be impossible to get the $10,000 out of the safe, but if he could bdfrow the money somewhere it would be “all right; he could not lose.’? Accordingly Graham procured the amount from the Park Bank, where the Walkill Bank kept an ac- count, and placing the entire amount in one bet, as he was directed by Briggs, he lost it Grabam was after- ward importuned by the ‘‘capper,”’ with whom Briggs and eaal hed had refused to divide the gains, to bry suit preci the scoundrels, but he said in reply that dare pot let bis bank people know that he had ever played in agambling saloon, BUSINESS TROUBLES, At the meeting of the creditors of Messrs, Clark & Russell; held yesterday at the office of Regis- ter H. W. Alien, No, 152 Broadway, the composition of fifteon per cont, which had been previously accepted, was confirmed, The adjourned first meeting of the creditors of Alex- ander Stein, manufacturer of furniture, took place yes- terday at the office of Regisier Fitch, No, 845 Broad- way. The purpose of the meeting was to elect an as- siguge, Mr, Martin Schrenkeisen, of Nos. 23 and 26 Ei Street, was elected, Mr, Schrenkeisem gave f $25,000, with three sureties. A meeting of the creditors of Solomon Rice, jewel- ler, of Jonn street, to elect an assignee, was called for yesterday, at the office of Register Williams, No, 4 Warren street. Instead of appointing an assignee, how ever, Mr. Joshua L. Cooley was elected: as trustee, to act under the direction of a committee of three cred- itors, to be com} of the following gentlemen :— Byron W. Green, William Rtker, Jr., and John 1, Mauran. It will be remembered ‘that Mr, Rice made an assignment to Solomon Marks some time ago, and, cailinga meeting of nis creditors, he offered a'compromise of twenty cents on the doliar, which was declinea, after which he was adjudicate bankrupt. His liabilities ainount to about $60,000. About thirty claims were proved yesterday, the largest of which are as follows:—Freund & Gold- | smith, $10,182 62; Williaim C. Greene & Co., $2,658 06; Pettor & Buffinton, $2,£65 68; W. & S. blackwiten, $2,257 44) Bryant "Bentley, $1,235 25; John T. SUSPENSION OF 3. T. & A. T. MEYER, WITH LIABILITIES OVER $1,000,000, Messrs. S. T. & A. T. Meyer, real estate operators, of No. 83 Walker street, have suspended unexpectedly, They have been carrying an immense amount of real estate, which they have been lately sacrificing to meet their payments ag they fell duc. Their real estate in hand now amounts to over $1,000,000, and is located in New York city, Brooklyn, Jersey City and Newark, and is both improved and unimproved. During the past four months they have been converting it into cash, which they havo turned over to their croditors. They expected tobe able to continue payment, but several of their largest creditors waited on the firm and asked them to make an assignment, which they did, the assignee being Mr. Frederick Lewis, brother of Alderman Lewis. Mr. Meyer stated yester- day that the event had been 80 unex- pected that he could scarcely give any estimate of the liabilities or assets, but if they could dispose of their real estate at cost, they would be able to pay all demands in fail and have a large surplus. They had been lately called upon to pay heavy ina causing a temporary embarrassment. A re pty) of their liabilities were contingent and would de- pend upon whether they were called upon to pay differ- ences in mortgages which they had assumed in solling off real estate. The transactions had extended over four years, and they could.pot tell what claims they would have to meet in the process of foreclosure. The amount which their creditors would realize depended mainly on the management of the property by the assignee, who 1s considered highly capable of discharg- ing his trust. The creditors boc scan their highest con- fidence in the firm, and are ready to accept any reason- abie compromise, Ail the property has been trans- ferred for their benefit. During the past year the frm has lost over $400,000 by indorsements and accept- ances for friends who had failed. ‘The failure does not affect the American Manufactur- ing Company, in East Forse street, of which Mr. S. I. Meyer is president, and A, T. Meyer, secretary. THE SINKING FUND COMMISSIONERS. A meeting of the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund was held in the Mayor's oflice yesterday afternoon. Comptroller Green, Recorder Hackett, Alderman Lewis, City Chamberlain Tappen and Alderman Jobn Reilly wore present. A resolution was offered by the Comptroller to give the franchise of the new Staten Island ferry from foot of Whiteball street to Joseph H. Starrin, who offers for the right dfty per cent of the gross receipts and is the highest bidder, Final consideration of this matter was jaid over until the next meeting, in order to place proper safeguards in the lease as to the number of boats which should ran daily. On mation of Comptrotler Green a resolution was passed calling upon the Dock Commissioners to furnish a statement of the work now in progress under their ge, and also as to the feasibility of reducing their clerical force. General C, K. Graham, formerly Chief Engineer of the Dock se gerdeagnoe Bent in @ communication en- gaging to back the wal! the foot of Canal street for and also to connect the stretchers at each ond the bulkheads for a similar amount, He contends with that this will hoe eight oon to petyges city, upon which a pier can be ouilt for Protest againae the expenge of the plan firs hee ge by the committee of ex- amination appointed by Mayor Wickham. ‘A resolution was also adopted directing the sales of leases for two yearsof that portion of Barren and Le Brothers islands belonging to the city of New ‘ork. The commission then adjourned, REDUCE THE FARE.
