WOMEN’S RIGHTS. PROBABLE SUCCESS OF FEMALE SUFFRAGE IN ‘ ‘MASSACHUSETTS—THB BILL PENDIKG IN THE LEGISLATURE—THE PROHIBITIONISTS AND LABOR REFORMERS WILLING—THE COMING ALDERWOMAN. Bostoy, March 2, 1876. After many years of industrious agitation there is at Yength more than an even prospect that the woman suf- frage movement is likely to amount to something here 4n Massachusetts. For over a quarter of acentury the | ‘Bubject has beon forcea upon the attention of the com- ‘munity in various ways, Every New England State has its own organization, and of late years there has | ‘been a New England Association, with headquarters in | Boston, and whose chief object seems to have been to ‘work upon the feelings and patience of the Massachu- Betts Legislatures of the past few years. Every winter ‘there has been a series of hearings, and so persistently dhave its friends pushed the cause that they have finally brought the lawmakers to seriously consider ir demands, and a subject hqetofore treated with ‘either contempt or ridicule 1s now beginning to be en- ‘Pertainca with downright earnestness.” GOVERNOR RICK FAVORABLE, Governor Rice, the present Chief Magistrate, is the first who has had the courage to come out squarely in Yavor of universal suffrage. In his inaugural adaress, delivered in January, he declared himself unequivo- ‘wally friendly to the cause, and there is not, therefore, tho slightest doubt that any favorable legislation will Meet with his prompt and hearty approval. TUN DILL BEFORE THR LEGISLATURE. Following several hearings a joint special commit- tee upon the snbject reported a bill in the Senate the ‘other day, and itis now undergoing an carnest and ‘vigorous discussion, That there aro a large number of women interested in it is manifested by the crowds | ‘who throng the gallery daily to listen to the debate, The bill gives “every woman’’ over twenty-one years of age, and with the» other qualifica- ‘tions required of’men, who has paid any taxes assersed ‘pon her, within two years the rightto voto forall ‘town and’ municipal officers and on all town and muni- ‘wipal questions, and to holdany town or municipal ‘office to which she may be elected or appointed. From Prosent indications the bill soems likely to pass, and the community may, therefore, begin to prepare for the @ovelty of the PRESENCE OF THE PAIR SEX g@ttho ballot boxat no very distant day. The rare of abuxom matron or asby maiden on the dary, or administering justice in some of the district is also among the immodiate possibilities here in Sfaseachusotts. Itis assumed that there are 400,000 ‘womén in tho State over twenty-one years of ago, 84,000 of whom are ers and 6,000 of whom have ed to the present gislature for a law similar the one outlined above. Of the whole number of ‘ing females fone 15,000 would be to the polling lista at once. This num- of cot would rapidly grow, and the Ww seems So simple that it is likely to be the entering ‘Wedge that will split this whole momentous question of woman suffrage. It might be added here as an inter- ®eting and significant fact that the 34,000 women tax- payers alluded to above own in thelr own right prop- erty amounting to $131,683,393 aud pay thereon nearly $2,000,000 in taxes. ‘THM DISCUSSION IN THE SENATE. ane bill bas been under debate in the Senate for sev- 8, and numerous and powerful arguments have eau an viared in favor of it. Even Dr. Loring, the ieriorese of that body, took the floor on tho first day ‘of the debate and displayed more than his usual eloquence in advocating a favorite measure. The Doc- for, it should be known, is an unusually handsome man, and it is to be presumed that the fair ones in the Falletios were prowd in having such a gallant champion their behalf, Ho discussed the measure in all its | fpossible bearings, and regarded the passage of the bill | AS one great step toward tho perfection of a Republic | ‘which was founded a century ago by our freedom- doving fathers. The bill will probably be discussed at t length in both the Senate and Hor but of its saa inal passage there seems to bo but little doubt, ‘THK PROMMITIONISTS AND LABOR REVORMERS. As was to bo oxpectod, the prohibilionists and labor sFeformers seck to prolong the sickly existence of their “organizations by identifying themsetves with any pro- Mghe movement not diametrically opposed to them, ‘t is to be presumed as a fact that the women are unt- Irgeeelly cent pposed to the rum traffic, and it is, therofore, mot unlikely that they themsolves will welcome the rohibitionists to their ranks. Some of the men, jowever, who favor the women’s movement wre likely to revolt if temperance and labor reform are introduced. It may be here ro- marked, though, that tho labor reform party An Massachusetts, as clsowhcro, is weak in brains and umbers, while the temperance element is of a strength Bnd power notto be despised. An eflort to forma wombination party of woman suffragists, prohibitionists ‘wnd labor reformers bas already taken shape, and it is ‘fmpossible a fusion of some sort may be eflected, Bae pai meeting to advance the movement has been held, and there will be another next week, Fog Prive men engaged in it are Wendell rhillips, Pitman and A. Bronson Alcott, one of the vener- Hone sages of Concord. Among those of less renown, ‘Dut who are always conspicuous !n reform matters, are the venerable Stephon Foster, of Worcester, who ‘allowed his property to be sold under the hammer Father than pod taxes, because his wife couldn’t vote; BC. ah of Southboro; G. W, Wilson, of Melrose; Dr. Addison Davis and Rev. George H. Vibbert, JENNIE COLLINS FOR ALDERWOMAN, It sounds rather curious, but the suggestion bas been seriously made that, in view of the passage of the bill ‘now before the Legislature, the women of Boston will unite in electing as ‘Alderrtac Miss Jennie Collins, of flin’s Bower fame. If it should actually come to that the olty would be represented in its councils | yy a woman the official mantle could not fall upon one ore worthy and able than Miss Collins. It would bo ut a simple recognition of the vast amount of suffer- ing which she has relieved and prevented :n an uposten- fatious way during the last few years. Probably all the charities 1n Boston have not done more than sho, as can ‘De abundantly testified to by the thousands of poor girls ‘Whom sho has rescued, fed and provided with omploy- | ment. She is well posted in public dM urs and her clo- | uent voice—not surpasved by Miss Dickinson or Mra. Divsempre—woald be. st once useful, persuasive and powerful. AN OLD-TIME OFFICE-SEEKER. Governor Jack Tyler, of Virginia, and old Jack Dade hhad beon chums and had “punished” a great deal of the “juice nectarious” together. If Dade was illiter- jate ho was a good soul and companionable, dod Tyler, ‘on of the old-timo fellows and a man of great ability, ead liked him anyway. After Tylor was inaugurated Dade | ‘made a trip to the capital to see him. Tho Interview ‘was characteristic. “Jack, old boy! how are you? Come in,” said the | Goveruor, grecting tho old man as of yore. “Governor Jack, ” said Dade (for they always called each other Jack), “oT want a offi.” The Governor ‘\aughed. “Jack,” said he, ‘what aro your qualifications for office ?"” “Woll, now, Governor Jack, I kin mix drinks, I kin ‘mix your boty fy sling, and your port wine sangerco ‘and your ion said Dade, going over a cataloguo of compoun nd I kin drink ’em, ana you know it.’? po rch Thughed together, on the strength of rem!- | ceweil, st, Jack, * said the Governor, “what kind of an office do you want?’ “Governor Jack,” office with hell up its THE CONNECTICUT GROUNDS AT THE OENTENNIAL. He has a plot of 386 feet deop, 100 feet front and 86 feet in the rear to attend to, In front of the building will bo the United States shield, surrounding the State coat-of- ‘arms, ali in growing plants, which have blossoms of appropriate colors. THE FLEET AT NORFOLK. ACTIVITY IN NAVAL AFFAIRS—-THE IBON-CLAD BALL— UNCERTAINTY AS TO THE DEPARTURE OF THE FLEET. Norvoux, March 1, 1876. To-day the churches of Norfolk are being liberally patronized and for tho next few weeks the ladies will attend strictly to the obeervance of the Lenten season, making atonement for the frivolities in which they have indulged during the gay months of January and February. It is some years since they have enjoyed such areally pleasant winter, and the bops on board the Hartford, Plymouth and Powhatan filled in very pleasantly the off days when they werg not engaged at some private reception or the Weekly gertian, The event of the season was certainly tho iron-clad ball that was given last Monday evening by the officers of the Monitor fleet. It took place in the sail lof of the Navy Yard,‘ which was elegantly draped with banting, hung from a mohitor awning, 80 as to give a semblance to the deck of one of these vessels, The Navy Yard Band was stationed on @ stand painted to represent a monitor turret, with two fifteen-inch guns peeping out. The ladies of Norfolk and Portsmouth and the wives and relatives of the offl- cers mustored In Strong force, and their elogant toilets accorded pleasantly with the brilliant uniforms of the officers, The guests were received by Commodore Stevens and his daughter, Mrs. Comps, and dancing was continued until three o’clock in the morning, everybody going home perfectly charmed with the en- tertainment, Since the arrival of Admiral Lo Roy thoro has been considerable activity in naval affairs, as the latter offi- cer has evidently taken charge of the fleet im- pressed by the idea that tho sooner they get to business the better. The intention of the Admiral is apparently to send all vessels to Hampton Roads as fsoon as they are ready for sea, and let them Ne at anchor there until ho receives his final orders and makes sail for Port Royal, The Plym- outh, Catskill and Alert are already at the Roads, andthe Vandalia and Huron leave to-morrow for tho same location. Tho monitors Montauk, Nantucket, Wyandotte, Passaic and Lebigh are stillat the Navy Yard, and the latter appears to be the only one near ready for sea. It will probably bo another month be- fore the others are put in trim, as thore appears to be a lack of funds in the Construction Department. Some few men are at work on tho New Hampsbire, but un- less they put on an additional forco it will certainly be ‘ten or fifteen days before the old three-decker is ready for her cruise to Port Royal. The Powhatan 1; ving at the Mg probably waiting vow tho New Hime shire when she is proneunced ready fer soa. Thero appears to be a of uncertainty among many of the omcers as to how soon the fleet will leave, and thero are oven rumors that the drill will be held in Chesapeake ie but they cannot be traced to any reliable source. e article in Tuesday’: ALD on the actual condition of the navy was read with marked interest by the naval officers now stationed here, and though somo of tho statements were crit- leised by a few the articlo in its entirety received the thorough approbation of the majority, id it was Isepaestblo to deny the unpleasant truths that it “contained, and in many instances the writer might have gone a good deal turther without spinolng a yarn, The Norwogian corvette Nornen, sh pri , and 600 tons measurement, arrived here on Monday after- noon from Havana. She is av-old fashioned, bluff bowed craft, mounting ten 24pound, two 60 pound and two 100-pound rifled pe and is com- nded by Post Captain Smith. The other officers © First Lieutenant Isaacksen, Second Lieutenant Brodtkorb, Third Lieutenant Petersen, Fourth Lieu- venant Proct, Fifth Licutenant Hamilton, Sixth Lieutenant Krogh, Seventh Lieutenant Burchardt, Dr, Lindlow and Paymaster Thorne. The Nornen left Nor- way on October 2, and touched first at Plymouth, after which sbo sailed for the West {ndies, tonching at Madolra, Martinique, St. “Bartholemy, St. Thomas, St. Juan, Port au Prin Kingston and Havana. She re- mained in Havana about a week, and then sailed direct for this port. The Nornen will leave in about a week for Cherbourg, and from thence she will return home, The captain of tho Nornen stated that in all probability tho Norwogian flag would be represented at Phila- delphia on the Fourth of July. A TREE GIVES UP A REYVOLUTION- ARY RELIC. {#rom the Doylestown (Pa.) Democrat. } A few weeks ago Jacob Klinck, a farmor, near Fox- chase, was sawing down a large chestnut tree whon the tooth of the saw came in contact with some metallic substance, Fearing the presence of something explo- sive he directed the workmen to saw on the other side of the treo. Thoy did so. After the tree haa been folied a gold watch, two gold pencil cases and a gold chain were found imbedded in the wood eighteon inches from the surface. They wore wrapped in asoiled sock, Tho treo was sawed off close to the ground, and they had evidently boen hidden at the junction of two roots aud the wood had grown over and enclosed them, The watch was old-fashioned, having a case which could be detached, alld was inscri with the date 1740. One of the pencil cases was provided with a pen. The other had only a poncil and was minus the seal. The chain was long and was intended to pase around the neck of the wearer. There was also a gold watch key, which, however, did pot fit the wateh. The tree Nad'attained a great age, boing about six feet in diame- ter. An old mansion once stood near by, and it is sup- that the articles in question were buried during the War of the Revolution. The watch was uninjured, except that the hands were rusted off. The finder bas had it repaired and will exhibit it to any who aro curi- ous to sec such arelic, Ho lives about a mile above Foxchase, on the county line, A SAD STORY. (From the Santa Barbara (Cal.) Press, Jan. 28.) Some two weeks ago, during that heavy storm, word | was brought in to our county authorities that a woman was lying out in the open air with a child that bad just been born. Accordingly Mr. Rynerson at once de- spatched a hack to bring her in, and she was taken to the St, Charles Hotel She gave her namo as Mrs, | Gertrude Ward. From what we can glean of her his- tory it appears that she came from New York with hor husband, and at Chicago, either intentionally or otherwise, she got separated from him and was sevoral miles on her journey toward California before she missed him, At San Francisco she got on board a steamer coming south, with the intention, as sho aftor- | ward stated, of jamping overboard. She got off here and wandered out in the country, where she was ove | taken by the storm and gave birth to the child. 8 appeared very despondent during her sojourn at tl hotel, and yesterday she onded her misery by taking dose of poison. The story bears upon the face of it a cruel case of desertion by the man who swore to pro- tect and cherish her. Surqjy there is a Nemesis that will overtake a villain who will botray a woman and desert her in the hour of her need. Her troubles have now ceased.
