BUSINESS TROUBLES. (CONTINUED FROM EIGHTH PAGE.] et maker, was held yesterday, the office of egaer Fitch. The cases of Hure |, Smith & Co., C. Wilson are likewise continued before him, The examination into the condition of the aflairs of Heury Kosenthali was held yesterday, at the office of Register Allen. No. 152 Broadway. The second composition meeting of the creditors of Nathan Harper, dealer in hair goods, took place yes- rday, at the ollice of adeno Ketchum. Five per cept on the dollar was paid. ‘The United States and Mexican Tolegraph Company, which has been, by its own request, in the hands of areceiver, was yesterday dissolved, the receiver's report having been filed in the County Cierk’s office. About $10,000 was divided among the sjockbolders, after pay- ing the debts. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Irregular, but at the Close Firm-- The Market Without Feature. Srkzrr, } Faipay, March 3—6 P.M. ‘The ingredients of to-day’s market were quite as ex- traordinary as the composition of the ‘curious old Port” which one finds advertised in a London vintner’s window, There was a mixture of high, low and me- jum prices, and there was wor ot burned offerings, 4s bulls and bears were roasted alternately, A barbe. due of bulls and a braisé of bears, and a few of these mammals escaped a scorching in the cecentric market, Stimulated by the result of the railroad conference held yesterday, Lake Shore at the opening took a pdound upward from 62 to 63, with large dealings and amid great excitement, while Pacifle Mat] aud Western Union followed close at its heels, less marked in an ad- vance of value, but in the case of the former even more Voluminous in extent of dealings. As bas been the story for some time past, the stocks above quoted were the stars in the day’s drama, Tho Western shares and the tissue paper flimmies caught nome reflected hgbt, but, like supers on the stage, took their cue from their superiors, and dragged through their parts alter the usual ragtag and bobtail fashion, But the market, like the battle feld of Linden, quickly “saw another sight,” when, as by the wave of @ magician’s wand (less than an hour after the open- ing), the active stocks turned 4 complete summersault, plunged down nearly one per cent, to the lowast prices of the day. Botb bulls and bears came badly crippled out of this fray, which had proved so sharp, sudden and unex- pected, Nothing daunted, bowever, after a breathing spell the contestants went at it again tooth aod nail, and by a little after midday the favorites were selling at higher figures than they had obtained on the opening upward surge. After this Lake Shore held its own at about 63 a 631¢ for several hours, although Western Union went on another rampage after lower prices and Pacific Mail sulked at 253, a 26, The day Gnally closed under a tremendous head o steam, with safety valve screwed down and paten, brakes ata discount. The whole market hungered for Btocks, and there wasan ostrich like appetito stil; clamoring to be appeased, when the Chinese tocsin bounded the hourof three, In this abracadabra of sudden turns and startling fluctuations, for which no reason coula be assigned, andin which the finger of po particular operator was clearly visible, it is difficult to get at the why and the wherefore. When brokers fall into a dilemma and are unable to guess at a move- ment, they wag theif beads and utter the cabalistic word, ‘‘Gould.”? So to Gould was attributed the chang- Ing hues of to-day’s market—to Gould, who, like an engine on the Elevated Railroad, was considered equally good at pushing and pulling. Beyond sheer manipulation there was little to affect the course of prices, although the handsome showing In the way of earnings helped the St. Paul stocks, and amore confident feeling of a dividend lent strength to Western Union. In view, however, of the fact that the Atlantic and Pacitic Company have made another reduction of rates—this time Canada ward—it would not appear that the dividend is any more assured than before. The desperate struggle of the snorts to cover their contracts in Lake Shore closed up the market with a whirl, but whether the top is still to go on spinning to- morrow, or whether it will speedily weaken and die out, isan opinion which can be readily obtained from the cheap prophets who hang about the doors of the Btock Exchange and infest the drinking dives of the vicinity. THE SALES TO-DAY amounted to 245,000 shares, which were distributed among active stocks as follows:—New York Central ‘and Huason, 600; Erie, 7,975; Lake Shore, 13,700; Northwestern, 7,700; do, preferredy 2,400; Rock Island, 8,800; Pacitic Mail, 52,730; St. Paul, 10,550; do, pre- ferred, 2,100; Ohios, 3,900; Western Union, 78,914; Wabash, 650; Panama, 100; Michigan Central, 1,400; Kansas and Texas, 1,200. Fripay, March 36 P, M. The course of trade has been slow and irregular dur- ing the past week, yet in some respects the prevailing situation ig an improvement upon the condition of af- fairs at the close of last week. In some quarters there has been some improvement in the volume of basiness, as well as in the tone of the markets, but in scarcely an instance has the betterment been marked or of a character to convey an assuratice of permanence, The most encouraging sign of the times is the con- tinued confidence which exists in the mercantile cen- tres, as manifest in the all but universal disinclination to force merchandise upon an unwilling market. The plethora of money and the low rates of interest cur- rentenable the merchants to carry merchandise with little discomfort or vexation, and this fact explains the ab- sence of that anxiety on the part of the mercantile community to. soll. The manifestation of such anxiety often presages a collapse; hence the con- tinued apparent unconeern with which the pro- tracted dull seagon is regarded and the continued confidence which, 1s almost everywhere apparent aro among the most hopeful anguries of the times, In some quarters there has boen rather more disposition to do busl- ness, but on the whole the season 1s backward and unprom- {sing, while the volume of business thus far in all the prin- cipal articles of merchandise, including the dry goods, hard- ware, boots and shoes, breadstuffy and many other commod- ities, bas been disappointing in the extreme, Yet the tenor of the markets is more favorable, perhaps, than at any time for some months, the merchants gonerally manifesting w shaken confidence and refusing to grant uny further mate- rial concessions, while, whenever avy demand of moment manifests itself, there is almost always « decided upward pecially true of broadstutls whiel rul arly nom! through the winter.
