The ordinary perils of the sea ure certainly great enough without superadding this awful siability—nay, almost probability, 1 would seem—to be consuined by fire, If certain of these Enghsh and American soft coals cag only be used or carried on shipboard at the risk of evoking at any moment this fire demon the fact should be known an to such coals be utterly excluded, This can readily be ascertained by careful inquiry. The analysis of | these coals wt aglance, the large percentage of volatile matter which gives to them tor dangerous characteristics. . The underwriters would seem to be the proper persons to conduct this inquiry, as they have the remedy in their own hands, by refusing to insure any vessel carrying, or avy cargo consisting, wholly or ‘in part, of these gassy, sell- kindiing coals, ‘That most of the true bituminouscoals (English and American) are subject to spontaneous combustion when in bulk, and under favorable circumstances, has long been known, and even when lying in large neaps, ¢x- posed to the atmosphere, there is a certain Waste aud deterioration that takes piace, attributed to a slow com- bustion, The waste of tuel, however, exposed to air, depends on its igniting temperature. "Experiments by Greenamann, at Faruowits, in Germany. have proved conclusively “hat an exposure of bituminous coal in heaps to the action of the weather for a period varying from two weeks to a year results in a large percentage of loss. This Joss is im the nature of 4 slow or incom- lete combustion; it is grove and more rapid in large caps than in sunull. and is also favored by the great oF less state of subdivision of the coal, large fragments losing proportionably less than smailer ones. The loss varies lrom tive to twenty-tive per cent, Varreutrapp also gives the following test y of pulver- ized coal (bituminous) wi tight vessel, through which a current ot air coula be drawn, ‘The Vessel and wir were brougbt to a temperature of 280 deg. Fahrenheit, and the uir, after passing through the gps was caused to bubble through certain chemi- preparations wiich had the property of retaining and rendering visible carbonic acid, Under these cir- cumstances the carbon of the coal waa ultimately re- moved by the chemical solution of the air as carbonic acid, showiug conclusively that a true combustion had taken piace. This combustion is so complete that in three months nothing but ashes remain,’ The higher the temperature the more rapid, of combustion. around the coal bunkers of steamships jarily be very great, from their close prox- imity to the boilers and furnaces; and in sailing ships, containing large quantities of these coals in bulk, taken on board mostly wet, the generation of heat to the poipt of ignition seems to be only a question of time. What this time will be will vary according to circumstances, It will be noticed in the foregoing list of disasters that the steamship Lumsden, after couling at Norfoik, sailed, and, after being out one day, put back, with oue of her bunkers on fire. The quantity im bulk seems to make no difference, as it will be seen the “Bonne Intention’? had but three or four tons on ir The sulphur and volatile matter in bituminous and hydrogenous coals are the active agent: spontaneot combustion, and the fuer the particles the soto i condition for producing that result’ There 1s absolutely no security on shipbourd from this great peril wh these fiery, gaseous coals are carried or used, as it certain they will ‘‘go off,” exactly how soon being the ouly unknown factor. The elements for the work of spontaneous destruction all exist; when the blaze will Degin depends only on the peculiar circumstances of each case, Great vigilance often detects the incipieut conilagration, “the tire is quietly put out,” and the pas- sengers are ‘saved from the shock of the immiuent danger they have passed through. Cotton, guupowder and other bazardous articles are safe in’ comparison with the coals referred to, for these generally will not burn or explode wmless Ore 1s put to them, whilst the former are, in their nature, spontaneously destructive. Pe See recent disasters from the cause referred to, it will be noticed, was the steamship Japan, valued at over $1,000, 000, nd some 500 or 600 of her passengers: were burnt up, or drowned asa preferable tate, alter jumping from’ the burning ship into the gea,’ This State of things may be expected to go on untilan en- lightened public opinion causes the substitution, on passenger ships at least, of coals which constitute a saie and clean ocean steam fuel; whilst the heavy Josses on transport ships will, it ‘is hoped, cause the underwriters to put up rates to cover losses or induce them to dechpe writing such risks altogether, BSOLUTE DIVORCES OMTAINED PROM DIFFER ent States, for numerous euusos, without publicity: Le ral : ha until divorce gal orerrwbere; no, charge, a ranted; way KE, Attorney, Ot Broadway.
