DOMESTIC MARKETs.’ FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Firm, but Irregular— Brokers Nonplussed—Almost @ “Panic in France. GOLD FIRM AT 114. Money on Call 3 and 3 1-2 Per Cent—Invest- ment Securities Steady—Governments in Fair Request—Railway Bonds Quiet and Firm. Wat. Street, Pripay, Feb. 25—6 P, x} The whole street has been engaged to-day in trying ¢o guess conundrums, and the effort has met with in- different success, The enigmas propounded had refer- ‘ence to the curious vagaries of the share list and the extraordinary proceedings of prominent dealers, The market appeared as a first class sphinx, and bad the Board existed in mythological times not a mother’s gon of them would have escaped immediate destruction | for their stupidity in guessing the riddles. Business -was marked by as many changes as dis- tinguish the hours ef aspring day, and up to the very close no one could conjecture what sort of speculative ‘weather we were to have next. Lake Shore and Western Union engrossed the atten- tion of deaiers, although Union Pacific was roused from {ts apathy at ono time and made a plunge downward from 6334 to 653 on sales of some 6,000 shares; bat it ultimately rallied and closea within halt a point of its first price. This was riddle No. 1, and it remains yet un. guessed, Why ‘Jay Gould should have sold the stock down some three points, orshould have allowed other parties to,do so, and what object he expected to accomplish, re- main a mystery, ‘There is a possible clew to it in the fact that the Pan- ama Railroad will despatch their first steamer of the gew opposition line on Tuesday next, and this, coupled with the heavy sales of Pacific Mail a day or two since, leads one to believe that some occult schemo is in course of perfection which wil! be developed at the proper time, Riddle No. 2 was suggested by the appearance in Lake Shore of abroker who is popularly supposed to represent Commodore Vanderbill. He supplied the markct with some 20,000 shares, which were quietly abgorbed, little or no excitement being manifested and the price vielding barely one point. The Robinson-Osborn party apparently wero buyers of half the amount, while the other halt went into tho | offices of dealers, large and small, Riadle No. 2 also remains unguessed, though every member in the room resolved himself into a sort of modern Casar and had his special commentary to make, They were sure of their ‘Veni, vidi,” but broke down utterly in their ‘“vici.”” The commentaries were somewhat to this effect: The Commodore was selling out his stock openly, and speculators might draw their own conclusions, on the principlo that a “wink is as good asa nod toa horsé.”’ On the contrary, it was urged that ff there was anything blind in the matter it was the broker who ha‘ been put up to act in that capacity by Gould, who was selling short stock and endeavoring to create an unfavorable impression at the same time. Theory | No. 3 was that Vanderbilt was de facto a seller, and | that Gould was quietly taking the stock, with a view | to control the road at the next election, i Theory No, 4 was to the effect that the whole busi- ness was a great washing operation, after the German fashion, when the family buckbasket is emptied into | thesudsonly ofiee in atwelve month, It certainly bad « good deal of this appearance; and a lavatory of matched orders, with the intent of creating a short interest, may be nearest the truth of any of the surmises. In spite of the heavy sales and the impression sought to be produced Lake Shore rallied a good one point from the lowest figure, and closed nearly up to the top price of the day. Riddle No. 3 had reference to Western Union, which, from the bad name given it these few days back, should have gone on steadily and decently to the dogs. It re- fused absolutely, on the contrary, to do anything of the kind, and took a spurt upward, which made the shorts shake in their boots. There were evidences that the Twenty-third street party had taken fright and were covering the shorts which they put out when the stock ranged between 75 | ‘and 76, In fact, the chief operator in this security is a | short waisted bear at the best of times, and is much | more comfortable when making along leg of Western Union tian when sailing on the other tack, | ‘ Phere is nothing to notice in other specialties save | to remark that they followed, to a greater or less de gree, the fluctuations of the prime favorites, A glance | at the printed list will afford ail the bistory that per- tains to thom to-day. ‘Surmises as to the future course of the market are a3 mixed as the list itself, and (he longest heads in the street are being scratched, with no satisfactory result, THE SALES TO-DAY. ‘The transactions on the Stock Exchange to-day ag. gregated 168,500 shares, New York Central and Hud- 00, 750; Erie, 3,600; Lake Shore, 55,700; Northwest. ern, 5,200; do. preferred, 1,100; Rock Island, 1,525; Pacific Mail, 20,100; St. Paul, 6,000; do, preferred, 2,100; Obios, 3,900; Western Union, 50,140; Wabash, 700; Union Pacifie, 5,150; Michigan Central, 1,550; St, Louis, Kansas City and Northern, 1,100; do. preferred, | 1,000; Kansag and Texas, 1,000; Atlantic and Pacifio Telegraph, 1,400; Quicksilver preferred, 1,400, OPENING, HIGUEST AND LOWEST PRICES. Frrvay, Feb. 25—6 P. M. and irregular. In some few instances there has been season, which were so generally’ miertained during | is becoming general, that the duln Presidential year will be as consplcuo as usual. The last two or three weeks have produced a this regard. The failure of Congress to pass any measure caleulated to better the finances of the country or to afford any measure of relief to the mercantile interests of the country, either by a wise revision of the tariff or anything else, and the apparent utter inability of the present Con- as to bring the currency values nearer to a gold Basis, sre anything but encouraging. It ts becoming more and more that the country need not’ look to for help; and if we are ever to return to specie payments we shall either drift into it or it will be brought about by the mercantile community, irrespective of Congress, The re- duction fn the price of labor all over the country is undoubt it seems to be a necessary consequence of the depression of currency prices to a specie basis, The reported contempla- tion by the National Treasury Department to substitute silver for the fractional currency, it is hoped, will be of nd- vantage and calcalated to hasten the period of fesumption if carried out.
