Ba} FNANLL AND CONNER ‘The Stock Market Dull and Prices Generally Lower—Western Union Suffers. GOLD FIRM AT 1138 3-4. Money on Call 3 and 4 Per Cent—Government, Railway and State Bonds Steady— ‘The Bank Statement. Watt Srrusr, Sarcnpay, Fob 19-0 Ft } “It would appear 98 though Jay Gould and the Twenty- "third street clique had struck hands for a determined onset on hapless Western Union, At the opening this ‘morning the price ran up to 7434, a half per cent above ‘the closing figure of the previous day, and confident dulls, like the chafing gentleman adrift in the deluge, began to think that there was “not to be much of a Shower after all.” They reckoned,~nevertheless, without their host, as ‘did the sinner, for Twenty-third street quickly opened its batteries and poured hot shot in the shape of short ‘stock on the market until the quotation was battered ‘down a good one point. * The attack was kept up during the entire day when- ever the price approached the point of 74. Some 7,000 or 8,000 shares were thus marked, but as far as depress- ing the prico went there must have been some disap- Pointment. for the stock stubbornly refused to yield except in a fractional way. While the street as a whole shakes its head doubt- 4ngly, as does a medieal man at the critical condition of ‘@ patient, there are many who believe the malady but a ‘passing one, and look forward to a speedy restoration ‘to health, with a fine appetite for quarterly dividends, Atlantic and Pacific, which is the bitter bolus its ival has had to swallow, seems to be content with the duty of physicking the enemy, for but 100 shares ap- Pear in tho printed list of sales to-day. Another reduction in rates has been made to-day to all prominent points in the Eastern States, a treatment which fs not likely to improve the condition of the sick man’? The Twenty-third street party, not content with show- ‘ing their enmity to the telegraph company, bad their fing also at Erie, and sold {t down from 17% to 17, ftom which it never rallied and at which figure it finally closed. Popular attention was confined almost exclusively to ‘Western Union, Erie and the St. Paul stocks, while Pacific Mail and Lake Shore, like the dandies of the Regency, appear to have had their day. ‘The granger stocks were firm at the start, but, prob- ably onthe lucus a non lucendo principle, began to fall off and be pressed for gale when it became known that ‘the Vance bill would certainly pass both houses of the Wisconsin Legislature. This is one of those mysteries which seem unaccountable to the mind of the amateur ‘Speculator, who innocently supposes that the fruition of one’s hopes is the commencement of happiness. This is possibly true as to the history of ordinary hfe, but the stockjobber looks at things through a medium of his own and sees in the accomplishment of ascheme an end to his speculation. Like Alexander the Great ‘he weeps that he has no mere worlds to conquer. Thus the bill which has been Pottering about the Legislature in a now you see it and now you don’t sort of way for weeks past, having become a law, there is a ‘Anish to all “points,” ramors and dead secrets which were used to keep things active and foster speculation. The wily jobbers scramble out of their holdings at the est attainable prices, and the innocents who have been lured into the web on the spider and the fly prin- ciple are left to beat their wings fruitlessly in its meshes, This has been the course of the St. Paul and North- western shares to-day, which closed severally one per cent and one-half per cent lower than they started The chief feature was the prevailing dulness in the general market and a not entirely confident feeling at the end,-which closed up dealings sluggishly at the (owest prices of the day.
