Wat Street, } Fripay, Feb, 18—6 P. M. ‘Dealers were reticent in the way of opinions before ‘the openiyg of the Stock Exchange this morning, and (Possibly their views were too much muddled to permit of expression. Cateris paribus, it was admitted that stocks, like Wongftellow’s prudent youth, ought to seek a higher Position, but prosaic facts suid otherwise. ‘There was a shadowy belief that shares on general Yprinctples should reach betier pr. nd there was a \wubstantial feeling that Gould, short of the market, might be likened to the “advisory,” who, “‘as a roar- ing Mon, walketh about seeking whom he may devour.” ough there was something ofa rally and a moder- firmness in the market, the fear of the roaring lion ‘was clearly evident, aud transactions were mainly Jbased upon his movements. Hence Western Union, as themost active stock in | ‘a dealings, waited upon what were, or what supposed to be the, manipulations of Jay Gpuld. occurréd a turn downward to 734 early in the and there was a twist upward to 74% later on. ‘was no apparent reason for either, except that at ne time Gould was reported seller ; and when the rallied he was with quite as good reason reported a buyer. “The advisory” probably acted in both capacities at ferent hours in the day, though at the end of busi- eas there was some evidence that, though his particu- brokers seemed to be selling, others in his employ quietly buying. So “the advisory,” whom jokers verily believe to be as black as he is painted, jabolized the market, to the confusion of both bulls id bears. * There were some tidings of a legislative nature -wired from Wisconsin to-day, which tended to keep the granger stocks firm, but public interest seems to have dropped away and the usual clientele was wanting in Attendance. Still there was an abiding faith in future ‘prices among the hangers-on that were left, which will probably continue until margins aro wiped out, and pustomers who are cajoled into buying to-day ‘“‘get the route”? to-morrow. Central and Hudson exhibited the same degree of firmness which it always does when its shares are vought for, Mr. Gould’s efforts to cover his shorts of pome two years’ standing are always thwarted on the q inquiry. To this is to be added the faith of vestors, who, in default of high-priced bonds, are plways ready to place thetr money in a Grst clase security. ‘The mortgage bonds of the road, selling at 126, with gan allowance of 7 per cent interest, while too high for purchase by investors, still in sympathy lend a value to the common stock, which asa first class invest- ‘ment still offers under its 8 per cent dividends a fair jand secure return to purchasers. Mr. Gould, with his Saree to be covered, and investors, with their funds be placed, are naturally to be credited with the gatrength of quotations of Central and Hudson consoli- rdated stocks, . Farpay, Feb. 18—6 P, M. And still the opening of the spring trade is delayed, and public expectation has once more been disap- pointed, Of greater importance, however, would be a disappointment with regard to the extent of the spring trade, Until very recently a large business has been predicted in almost every department, but.so late is the demand in setting in that grave apprehensions aro coming to be entertained that the spring trade will prove disappointing in more ways than one. Owing to the quietude which bas pervaded commercial circles for more than @ year and the small busin: transacted in almost every department of trade during the past three or four seasons it was hoped that mercantile transactions during the incoming season would prove exceptiouably large, ia ticularly as @ dearth of goods has been reported from e | direction West and South, save, perhaps, in some few of the prinvipal cities and other places of distribution. But tt be- gins to look as though the proverbial dalnoss incidental to the Presidential election year will sgain have to be expe- rienced, though what particular connection necepéarily ex- ists between trade and politics during a Presidential cam- paign which doos not exist at other times it would be dif. cult to tell, Certainly there ought to be nothing in common between business and politics, yet it {san tndisputable tact that polities often does exert @ controlling and always” baneful influence upon purely commercial matters; hence the growing fears in the public mind that_business may be greatly restricted during the ensuing spring and fall seasons by the disturbing elements inseparably connected with politics, and especially during the Presidential year, Trade has been almost everywhere disappointing during the past week. Dry goods have been sparingly dealt in, although ne especial change has taken place in the situation or in prices curremt. Business in hardware was seldom or never before so dull during the month of February, andthe worst of it is tt is feared that there will not be anything like the usual movement at any time during the month. Dealers are tearful that the spring trade will be very small, if not failure. The movement in Grain during tho week his been extremely slow. Shippers’ limits are still low, and, notwithstanding prices have fa yored the buyer all through the week. there has been very Little pressure to sell, prime spring, in particular, being held firm, apparently, although in the absence of buyers it has been difficult to ascertain the exact market value of any kind. Oorn has ruled rather quiet, especially “spot” corn, nd the dealings have been confined almost wholly to for- ward deliveries, The general market has been pretty steady. Oats have been without movement, but the market has not materially changed. Provisions have been much more active and business from day or bows pork and Froights and charters h the week.
