“FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, the ‘ys Market Stroug—A Sharp Granger Securities, New York Central and Rock Island. in } SgoLp FIRMER AT 1133-8. as a 3and 4 Per Cent—Foreign Ex- Steady Government Bonds Higher and Railway Bonds Ac- tive and in Good Request. Wau Srrzer, } * ‘Toxapar, Fob. 15—6 P. M. ‘Tho grangersiocks are again to-day the magnet of the market, ‘There bas been but little variation in public attention, save in the slight perturbation oc- casioned by the rise in Central and Hudson, The needle has been trae to the pole, and the pole to-day was the Northwestern and St Paul stocks, It \* bas generally been accepted asa fact that the pool in these securities had been sold out and the shares widely distributed among general operators, but there ‘was certainly no evidence from transactions to warrant this belief, or even to conclude that any other than ‘the old party were handling the ribbous Northwest common and preferred had the innings to-day, while the St. Paul people did some very lively fielding, and when wickets were struck at three o’clock the first named had added a good one point to the day’s score, with apparently any number of wickets to go down to-morrow. Next to the granger stocks, Central and Hudson showed the most strength and even a greater rise, for -after slumbering as it has done for many months it seems to have wakened up like a giant refreshed. There were sales of some 5,000 shares (an unprecedented amount in these tines for so sleepy @ stock) and on it the price'was carried from 114% to 1164. The quid- _Punes are much exercised as to the cause of this activ- “iy, and, if they obtain facts, are tremendous at theories, These are some of them:—Jay Gould, who fs made the Scapegoat of all the odiam, as he is credited with all the movements in the market, is afirmod to be short of the stock at" figures some twenty points bolow present prices, and that to his contortions in endeavoring to -cover is due the sudden activity in tho shares. Others point tothe high price of investment stocks which admit of an unsatisfactory return in the shape of interest, and tell ‘you that it ts as _ natural for investors’ money to flow into a sterling security like Central and Hudson, which pays eight per cent per annum now and will pay ‘ten, as for water to run down hill. Whether tho strength of the stock be based upon Gould’s exigences -or upon its own intrinsic merits is insignifteant in view of tho fact that there is little of it to be acquired, and that lttle only at the expense of higher fignres. ‘The market to-day has been somewhat lhe a plum padding—a mixture of raisins, citron, sugar and flour. The.goodies we have named above, the baser ingre- dienta, were composed of such stocks as Lake Shore, PadMfic Mail, Onios and Western Union. There is little to be said aboat either, as they were treated with * -almost-contemptuous indifference. ‘Western Union was somewhat of an exception, as it seemed to be thesick man of the market—one of those invalids in whose case “physicians were in vain,” for it eloged at nearly one per cent below yesterday’s final Balose,, The feduction of rates by the Atlantic and Pacific Company, as we noticed this morning, and the street tatk to the effoct that the magnates of the company had been getting out of their stock, joined to the apprehen- sion that the coming dividend might be cut or passed, ‘“rendered dealers timid and reluctant to operate, Tho great strength of the rest of the market gave it a sustain- Angpower, however, which possibly averted a tower scate of prices, There wasnothing remarkabie in the tissue- paper fancies, and such changes {n quotations as were -maada will be found under their proper headings.
