GOLD QUIET AT 112 3 4 A 112 7 Money Settling Down—The Rates To-Day 3 1-2 and 4 Per Cent—Some Railroad Bonds Lower—Investment Shares Generally Firm, Watt Street, Wenvespay, Feb, 9—6 P. M. After a battle in which the opposing hosts have been ~ Cagaged it is not uncommon with civilized mations for commanding generals to agree upon an arnristice, ‘There appears to have been a tacit consent to such a truce on the Stock Exchange to-day. A dropping fire from outposts and a desultory attack here and there marked the day, but there has beeu no general engage- ment. The market as a whole has been quiet and uneventful, and whatever activity was manifested was confined to two or three speciaities, Pretty much the galy security which showed a strong front to the prevailing depressing influence was that of St. Paul, which worked its way up in both common and preferred qualities from 42a 43 and from 78 a 79% ro- spectively, and closed within a sbade of these prices. Tbe St. Paul shares have grown considerably into fa- vor as offering a fair chance for a speculation for higher prices, under the view that the concern has been earn- ing money and that the gains have been put to the legitimate use of paying its debts. for the past two years, in spite of tbe antagonism of the Potter law, the road has earned enough to pay the rate of seven per cent on its preferred stock, but that direc- tors have wiscly voted to set this sum aside for the ex- ‘tinguishment of its floating debt rather than. to divide «the surplus among stockholders. With this belief and the anticipation of a bond dividend inquirers for the vatock have for some time back showa up in consider. able force, Of Northwe: Western Union, Pacific Mail and -Ohios, all of which have recently attracted the atten- tion of traders, littie can be said but that they were ~consigned to the hungry hunters after eighths, who | cwent either with “good fut capon lined” or as hungry as hunters are popularly supposed to be. Lake Shore, of all the popular favorites, seemed to ‘bo most in disrepute, and was the main attack of the “Gould faction. There was shown an evident desire to realize, and signs pointed to the Robinson-Osborn “party as being particularly desirous to exchange certifi- cates for cash. There are stories tloating about of di- minishing earnings and doubts of another dividend, which bears are using to depress values, but in ab- sence of any official statement it will be safe to accept them only with a grain of salt o! extra size. The Hannibal and St. Joseph stocks showed them- selves the weakost of all the funcies, and declined some two points from opening prices. The why and the ‘wherefore was tbe subject of a general discussion sati “factory to nobody. Michigan Centra! came on the market very weak in “the knees, and when it showed a disposition to brace ‘up Was thwarted in the attempt by sales on Boston account, which disastrously affected its underpinning, ‘as the printed list will show. The Stock Exchange can no more do without a mystery than can Mr. S. V. White, of Plymouth church | notoriety, without “a grievance,” and we have had a first class one to-day -in the sudden departure for Europe (on dit) of one of Mr. Gould’s prominent Drokers in his yacht Vesta, The catching up in a cloud of Elijah of old could not have astonished his friends more thoroughly than did the sailing of the yacht. The gobomouches of the street saw something very strange in the proceeding in the light of the recent Gould-Mills imbroglio, and were unable to understand that a gentleman could bourd bis vessel for a fort Might’s sald without leaving a I. P. C. for every pad- shaver in the puriieus of the Stock Exchange. AS we stated at the head of tis column, the market is mixed and traders uncertain as to its future course, It is not likely that it can contipue long in this state of cancertainty, and a few days mast show whether, as the marriage service expresses it, the result is to be tor “better or worse.” OPENING, BIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. NA CHEMICAL ‘actical cluemaist A DIVIDEND PROMISED NEXT MONTH, On the 21st of last November it became known that the affairs of the Security Bank, on Third avenue, were in poor condition, The directors called a meeting and drew up resolutions arranging an agreement with the depositors not to urge their claims fora period of twelve months, in order to give the bank time to reorganize, and stated that they would give twenty-five per cent of principal in three months, ‘he bank reopened for business in the course of a weok, about one-half of the dopomtors having signed the agreement, The other half retused to make any compromise and determined only to gve the ordinary sixt y day otice, according to law. tice was tendered, and at the expiration of the sixty days the rere’ thinking the depositors would se mand a receiver, had one appointed by Judge rett, Recently a ‘call was issued to depositors to pre. re their bank recounts, and promising a dividen arch 1, On the reception of this some parties hi ing claims against che bank doubted its capacity to make any such settlement, and have demanded an investiga- tion of the matter. A Hunanp reporter accordingly called on William ©. Banks, tho receiver, yesterday, and in answer to inquiries touching the matter Mr. Banks said that during the last fow woeks money has been coming in rapidly, and he confidently looked to « payment of the promised dividend at the time ap- pointed.
