FINANGIAL AND GOMMERCINL,. Stocks Erratic and Lower— Outsiders at Fault. GOLD STEADY AT 113 A 1127 Money on Call Easy at 3 a 4 Per Cent—In- vestment Securities Strong—Govern- ments Steady—Railway News. Watt Srreer, ix Tvxspay, Feb. 8—8 P. M. Punch’s advice tothe young man about to marry fis ‘ours to those who contemplate a dyer in the market— “Don’t.” And these are the reasons. A struggle be- tween the two partics is always a dangerous position for an interposing outsider, and, even though the prin- Bipals come off scot free, the interloper is apt to be Yurt. Thestheory of the breach between Gould and his brokers, which we published a day or two since as & matter of story, appears in the light of to-day’s events Jo be an actual fact, The Osborn-Robinson-Mills com- Dination ia In panoply arrayed against the Knight ot Biack Friday. , The latter, similar to one of the old heroés storied in Froissart’s “Chronicles,’? has entered Yhe lists like the alliterative “Austrian army, awfully rrayéd,”” prepared to tilt against all comers, Tho combination’s panoply is composed of Lake hore, Western Union, Ohios and the Western stocks. ' The Black Knight, like the Blue Briton, appears in “puris naturatibus,”” or the naked truth, for he 1s short of the very armor that’ protects his foes. He faas, however, the offensive weapons of wealth, daring and unscridpulous rapacity, and he well knows how to use them, The first joust of the tournament has come off to-day, and though lances were split and riders un- horsed the jssue remains doubtful. Though at the close the Black Kuight was having the best of the fray his opponents were far from being conquered. This is the verdict rendéred by the price list, which acts as herald in the, tournay, and his decision cannot be gainsaid. At the opening of business the tide which was rising Bo rapidly at the close of yesterday rippled up into still higher figures, but speedily began to ebb with the growing hours. For a whiJe dulness was ‘the rule, although it was apparent by the feverish fluctuations ‘that two powers were at work in the market—one for arise and the other for a fall. There was a complete deadlock at times, as when two wrestlers struggle together, almost motionless, yet with every muscle in play—each unable to throw the other. About two o’clock the Osborn-Robinson-Mills com- bination began to lose its grip of the market, and thence on to the closing hour values were quoted by gradually diminishing figures until the gang brought them toa full stop at prices from one-half to one per cent lower than the termination yesterday afternoon, The fight was confined almost exclusively to those stocks which we have before spoken of, and the decline fas limited to them in the same degree, The Western shares, fike the rear guard in an engage- ment, were out of the fight and suffered little or no damage. In fact, they were the strongest feature in the market, particularly St. Paul tommon and preferred. These latter were in active demand, under the, report set going, for the twentieth time, that the 14 per cent dividend on tho preferred Shares was on this occasion to be asure thing, © Ma- nipulators have terrified the short sheepso many times with this dividend wolf that when he does come down on the fold there is not likely to be left a single mutton to be gobbled, There was another scintillation in Central and Hud- son to-day, and for a time the fire flew briskly. Mr. Gould, or rather his new brokers, made a new effort to cover up short contracts; but it is no easy ‘thing to accumulate stock without rushing the market ‘up on very small purchases, and this was the case to- day. The price rose to 11444, the highest in the his tory ofthe consolidation, and if the effort to bay in shorts and the popular behef in future teh per cent dividends continue to prevail there is no reason why several points more should not be added to the present price. Obios were off one per cent from yesterday dest prices, and at the same time there was considerablo eagerness to sell, which the Twenty-third street party with their usnal affability, when the bear feeling is prominent, helped to the best of their ability. ‘The Consolidated Coal Company are out with a report of their business for the past year, the sajent point of which is that they have earned $252,180 77, free from “all expenses, interest, sinking fund and dividend.” Mr. Allan Campbell will be the candidate for re-election to the presidency at the next meeting, and though some stockholders think cannot do justice to the Commission of Public Works and to the coal company ‘at the same time, he begs to differ and points to the figures of the report as an argumentum ad hominem. Winding up the summary of to-day’s doings it seems to be clear that the stock market Is reduced to a war to the knife with Gould and his former brokers, It putsiders elect to join in the méiée they will do so at their own risk and should not complain if they suffer blows from both parties, If the market were a sentient, animated being it would probably exclaim, in warning tones, ‘(Noli me tangere.” As the merest bucolic broker knows Latin enough to understand the phrase weabstain from translation, and merely ex- tlaim that ‘These are our sentiments,”’ ‘THE OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. It has long beea known that the pooling of earnings on Kast bound freight from Chicago was not working satisfactorily to most of the roads engaged, particularly Lake Shore and Michigan Central, It appears that the Baltimore and Ohio Company had no sooner agreed to the rates fixed from Chicago than, by making connections through tho Ohio and Mississippi with the numerous ‘‘cross-roads”’ (the existence of which is scarcely known in our stock market), it established rates from points west and southwest of Chicago even lower than those from that city, this diverting to its own line a fair proportion of the business that her: tofore has gone through Chicago, and was there distributed to the different Eastern lines, Honce the dissatisfaction on the part of the Chicago roads, both East and West, and the hue and cry of the Chicago merchants concerning tho discriminations against that city, Now it is openly charged that some of the pool lines have broken tho compact by secretly oftering rebates to large shippers. It is stated that the probabilities favor an early opening of thedake navigation, and therefore that if the rail- roads are to receive anything from the movement of the immense quantities of produce now 1n store at Chicago and Milwaukee they haye but little timo left in which to reduce rates to @ point that will induce shipments, While the foregoing 18 the condition of affairs at the West, as reported by the Chicago journals, vague rumors are in circulation here of complaints from tho Baltimore and Ohio Company that the New York and Boston lines to the West have 80 many contracts run- ning at the low rates of last summer as to prevent its line from obtaining any business at either of the cities named, and that it seriously contemplates withdrawing from its agreement. The readers of the Heat will remember that when these arrangements were entered into it suggested that in the absence of business they were not likely to stand long, PRODUCE EXPORTS. The exports of produce from this port for the week ending to-day were $4,657,375, against $4,382,576 for the corresponding week in 1876 and $6,219,713 in 1874. ‘The total exports of produce since January 1, this year, were $20,498,312, against $26,806,051 for the corre- sponding period In 1875 and $32,673,408 in 1874 THE VORSIGN MARKET.
