Money on Call Loans 4 a 5 Per Cent—Foreign Exchange Quiet—Governments Strong and Active—Railroad Bonds Firm. Watt Street, Tuurspay, Feb. 3—6 P. M. It will be conceded that Pope as a poct was a heavy ewell in his line, and his manes may possibly consider ft an impertinence for a mere money writer to borrow his famous Alexandrine line as descriptive of to-day’s stock doings. We nevertheless take the risk of the solecism and quote the market as generally feverish and feeble, and that jt, Like s wounded snake, drags its slow length along. ‘There was a general give way in prices in to-day's transactions, @hich {s not altogether in keeping with the rose-colored reports, so industriously spread, of the good. time coming, based upon a reviving business @nd iicreased railroad gains. There is a Secret feeling that the recent hop, skip and a jump in the popular fancies may have Been dueas much to manipulation as toa real set in ‘of prosperity. It is discovered that the share list is ‘weakest when it looks strongest, and that, after all, the divinity which shapes stockjobbing ends is Mumbo Jumbo Gould. As we have repeatedly remarked+leav- ing investment stocks out of the question—the market for fancies is strictly confined to the four walls of the Btock Exchange. Nobody knows this better than Mumbo Jumbo, and, taking advantage of the Centen- nial hurrah, he has gotten up a hue and ery which at- tracted a crowd of followers, as does the clamor ot ‘Stop thief!” excite the lomerers of the street. Verily these letter gentry have captured the culprit, and, be he ‘known under the name of ‘Lake Shore or Western ‘Union or Pacific Mail, the speculative public have got -him, and got him badly. Mr. Gould, as we suggested a few days since, has been swinging around the circle of the stock list, thundering like Jupiter Tonans, first here and then there, with the hope of attracting worshippers to his shrine, Asa market was made it was furnished with stock, and it is more than probable that these blind be- lievers in a sudden prosperity Lave been filled chock full of shares which may, before relief comes, prove an indigestible meal. The market as a whole closed from one-half to one per cent lower than the opening, although later trans- actions were an improvement on the worst prices of the day. There were no rumors circulating of value enough to influence the market, and the decline seemed duo to the fact that the short Interest was toa great extent covered, and that the bull cliques had spilled’ out their holdings to their credulous friends. IfMr. Gould has really been able to market his long stocks to the extent that the street gives him credit for, it docs not seem likely that we shall have a turn for the better for some little time to come, If, how- ever, the manipulation has been for the purpose of enticing a larger short Interest and of buying back fongistocks at cheaper prices, any day may witness a whirl upward. Outsiders, with a hankering after stock gambling, will readily see from these views what a gure and certain chance they have in taking a hand. ‘THE SALES TO-DAY.
