’ NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1876.—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Stocks Irresular—A Temporary Reaction— Prices Unsettled and Speculative Jadgment at Sea. ‘THE MONEY MARKET EASY AND WELL SUPPLIED Gold Steady at 113 a 113 1-8 a 113, Govern- ments Firm, Investment Securities in Fair Demand and Foreign Exchange Quiet—California Stocks. Wart Sraser, } Moxoat, Jan. 31-6 P.M The Gres of the Stock Exchange engine, which had Temained Lauked over Sunday, were stirred into furious activity at the very outset of business this morning, ‘The pressure of steam which was put on Western Union ‘was sometbing remarkable, and the speed with which At got over (he first part of the journey was as exbilarat tng to its supporters as it was alarming to its enemies, The throttle valve was thrown wide up atthe very ‘Start, and the stock few of on its upward turn at a half per cent better price than it closed at on Saturday, and in a few minutes gained as much more, which figure turned out In the end to be the best quotation of the day, In referring to the official record of figures ‘and Guctuations, printed elsewhere, we have only to ‘gay that the bulk of business was confined to Western Union, and that, as is almost certain to be the case ‘when a single stock receives paramount attention, the Test of the market took the cue from the favorite and rose and fell as tts vagaries dictated. The various rumors point to « rise which bad ‘Deen set afloat must have seriously disconcerted the ‘short interest, and possibly brokers, in the Interval of Sunday, with two nights of suspension hanging over them, had their slumbers disturbed, And, being thus frighted, swore a prayer or two And slept again, At apy rate, there was an intensely animated scram- Die as soon as the gong sounded—on the part of the ‘bulls to get in and on the part of the bears to get out, which, contradictory as it may seem, was accomplished by the same process, that of purchasing shares. It al- most always happens that these sudden flurries are caused oy the ephemeral shorts, whose parses, being Jean-and meagre, will not sustain much of a strain, and the cry is ‘‘Sauve gui peut” under vory little provo- cation. The big bugs of the street, however, who had put out their contracts, ‘not for @ day, but for all time,” take their punishment quietly and wait until the small fry have been pretty thoroughly netted, when they add a few more hundreds to their previous venture atthe enhanced prices, ‘There was no exception to this rule in the day’s his- tory of Western Union. For many weeks past the stock has been drowsing along in a half apathetic state, under a suspicion that there was something askew in {ts internal mechanicism, and this belief, while it in- duced a long line of short contracts, gave a most favor- able basis for the manipulators of the market to engi- neer a sudden and vigorous rise upon. The moment the clamorous and bowlig mob of plgmy shorts (more or less injured) had got outof the way of the destroyer prices dropped off, the intense interest ceased, and the stock, after threatening surge downward, eventually closed nearly one point lower than the opening. Pacific Mail is vested with the same properties as was ‘Western Union; thore is plenty of dynamite in the Stock, which can be exploded at any moment that the «magnates of the market choose to apply the match. In their rounds of the stock list it is quite possible that these gentlemen may turn out Themmasséan ends, ina financial point of view, and hoist Pacific Mail and its enemies with one grand detonation. Lake Shore followed the leader in its ups and downs, but with less spirit, so that, relatively active though it was, it gained but a moderate advance, and at the end showed a lower standard than that which wt commenced with. ington telegrams furnished the information that House was after the Paciilc railroads with a sharp stick in the way of a resolution directing the Judiciary Commitvee to report what measures are nec- essary to secure the amounts due the government, and of another, still more vicious, directing an unpleasant |* inquiry as to whether Union Pacific had not forfeited itscharter. In spite of these hostile demonstrations, however, Mr. Gould kept his stock strong by simply Letting it alone, and as nobody deals in it but himself and his following itis probable that neither Congress norany other power save @ monetary disaster can much disturb bis equanimity. The Northwestern and St. Paul stock showed a marked decrease in dealings from a day or two past. The pool in the former has apparently been pumped dry for the present, but the bread which was cast upon | kK, its waters may soon turn up in somo other fancy, soaked and sodden though it be. Nevertheless, the Western stocks were strong, with the rest of the market, despite the news from the Capi- tol that the Supreme Court had failed to render a de- cision in the Granger cases. ‘The history of the day may be dismissed with the | observation tuat the market was characterized by an intensely bullish feeling, and though there was a swing back atone time which bad an alarming look things recovered again later on, and closed, if not at supreme Prices, at Rast with a strength that Samson himself “would havo envied. THE SALRS TO-DAT aggregated the large amount of 249,500 shares, which ‘were divided among active stocks as follows:—New York Central and Hudson, 900; Erie, 5,400; Lake Shore, 67,400; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 300; North- western, 17,250; Northwestern preferred, 4,200; Rock Island, 2,450; Pacific Mail, 27,200; St. Paal, 10,700; St Paul preferred, 6,700; Ohios, 22,600; Western Union, 75,000; Wabash, 1,000; Union Pacific, 1,900; ©.,G. andl.
