Paganini gained @ great portion of his popularity by ‘his novel instrumentation of the ‘‘Carnival of Venice,” played, as it was, upon a single string. It may be questioned, however, if he did not grow sick of its un- ending repetition, despite the success which it brought him. The money writer who, by the nature of events, has been compolled for weeks past to harp upon Lake Shore as the one-stringed instrument of the market tay be pardoned if he finds a constant recurrence of the same old tune equally monotonous, To-day, how- ever, there has been some relief, for there was a de- ~elded transfer of interest trom the drone of the favor- ite fiddle to thé harmony of a full orchestra. In a comparative view Lake Shore was neglected, while popular attention was directed to the St, Paul , and Northwestern shares, which exhibited an anitma- tion and firmness that they have long been strangers to, It was early manifest that something was brewing Dy the appearance in Northwest of the Gould brokers, and the room, taking tho cue, quickly followed in the » Wake of the chief operators. Almost ail the small traders took a hand in the game, “hoping that the cards would turo up good ones, and on ‘ta the close of business, it must be confessed, that al ‘most every one seemed to have succeeded in drawing ‘to 4 pair. As usual in a broker’s market, it matters little for coasons why, traders for iractions simply ask that *some power should be exercised to start the machine, sand they themselves are capabie of keeping it going. “The word is—piten in early, get out-soon and may the arch enemy take charge of the laggard, There was no peed of prowsiug favorable decisions dathe way of granger litigation nor of hinting at pros- pective dividends; it was quite enough that the stock jobbing Samson was making a display of his thews and sinews, and forthwith a crowd of imitators rushed in ftitent upon a trial of their puny biceps, ‘There is an awful warning, however, attached to the story of the strong man of tbe Bible, who, we know, ‘came to grief in a weak moment and under reprehensi- dle circumstances, and the strong man of the street ‘may yet meet with his Delilah of disaster, armed with ‘the shears of panic. ‘The effect of this new-born interest in the Western | fancies was most noticeable in ihe preferred sorts, and had the effect of advanting Northwest preferred a good three points, and St, Paul preferred nearly the same ‘amount, from the opening prices. ‘The common varieties followed less rapidly, but ‘with great strength, on more limited transactions, and all descriptions closed up firm, with an appearance of # turther rise to-morrow, With the exception of the above the remainder of thé'market showed but little animation, prices being | Well sustained and at the finish of business ruling gen- erally at the best rates of the day. Erie, however, was ‘valky and seemed to have jost all the spirit which characterized it yesterday. j of the day having been at these figures. The rates It 1s but a weedy brute at | Dest, with a bard mouth and broken knees, and is safe | 4 throw any rider over its head that venturesa mount. It is it only for the kuacker’s yard of the bankruptcy ‘court, and the sooner it gots there the better. There was nothing of any moment from Washington to-day as affecting the currency or resumption ques- tions, though several bills were examined in commit ‘tee, and it is stated that the Committee of Ways and + Means will shortly consider a bill providing for the carrying out of the Redemption bill passed last winter. Lt is quite possible that the stock market in the near future will be sensibly affected by the different opin- fons and treatment of disagreeing Congressional cur- tency dociors, ‘THE TOTAL TRANSACTIONS of the day aggregated 116,600 shares, which were dis- éributed among the active stocks as follows:—Western Union, 4,100; Pacific Mail, Shore, 25,000; Michigan Central, 1,100; Northwestern, 22,300; do. preferred, 12,700; St. Paul, 14,300; do. pre- ferred, 6,000; Rock Island, 1,300; Obio and Mississippi, $6,900; C., C. and 1. GOVERNMENT BONDS. An active movement is observable in this depart- ment, and we learn from Messra, Fisk & Hatch, who represent some’ of the largest transactions, that the supply is not equal to the demand which is made by a number of the large institutions and individual capital- ists The abundance of money, coupled with a want of confidence in purely speculative stocks, has evidently compelled attention to the Teal anchor stoves of the market, and among these are the first class railway bonds and government securities. THE OUTLOOK AS SEEN FROM THE NATIONAL CAPITAL—-A HOPEFUL VIEW OF THE SITUA- TION, The Washington Chronicle, which claims that the national capital is the best place to hear news from all quarters of the country, in ite issue of the 27th inst, takes a very hopeful view of the buginess situation, A® an evidence of this tt refers to the coming reopening of mines in North Carolina containing gold mixed with sulphurets in very profitable quantities, which have been abandoned owing tothe want of proper facilities for working them ; to the largely increased culture of tobacco in Virginia; to the perceptible growth of towns in South Carolina along the lines of railroad; to tha deepening of the channel at the mouthof the Miasis- sipl, under the energetic labors of Captain Eads; to the erection of large manufacturing works in the cities of the West, and to the repair and improvement going) by he snake of the more extended lines of railroads 4 adds :— While our attention is called to many failures—~ chietly failures which took place once or twice before, like the Spragues and the Tredegar works—novody has thought to catalogue the willing enterprises which are more prosperous than ever before. We are sending woven flannels and Gloucester prints and Pacific blank- ets to Europe. If Americans would stop wearing silks the whole country would be homeciad, Senator Dor- sey came from Arkansas the other day, and says that SKCTIONAL AND RACK ANIMOSITY has ceased there; the raiiroad is within five miles of Hot Springs, and Little Rock and Fort Smith are nearly connected. Meantime, the city of Cincinnatl is about to make a uew contribution to drive her great Southern railroad forward, on which thousands of laborers are working Senator Johnston, who has just been. re-elected for six years, from Virginia, saya that in his part of the State the people are contented aad doing well, Senator Sargent ostimates ‘THE INCRRASH OF THE GOLD PRODUCT the coming year, from placer mining alone, to be, $10,000,000, On account of the unequalled supply of water from this year's rains, We all know what a stately Texas ts betng raised up. We know that in thi coal regions of Pennsylvania work is resumed, and, better than all, we see that the soundest interest on this continent is the farming interest, which teaches the rising generation that labor alwi the only true independence comet The bammer and ornamental class is enliata, i is the best fricud of *BUSINESS FAILURES.
