GOLD DULL AT 112 7:8. Money on Call 5 Per Cent—Exchange Firm— Government Bonds Strong—Investment Securities Tending Upward. Watt Steger, Wepnxspay, Jan. 26—6 P. ae} In spite of the spiritiess market, which was the fea- | ture of yesterday, the stock world seemed all agog for ‘the opening this morning, under the impression that a day of quietude would naturally be followed by a day ‘Of activity, and that the course of prices was to be upward andonward, To a certain degree the opinion was a correct one, for stocks showed an advancing tendency, and for the first hour bulls were as hilarious as if they hada free range of aChina shop, Afterward matters did not look so auspicious, and rampaging ‘Dulls quieted down and left financial fields and pastures for a quiet midday browse at Delmonico’s. After this hour the market ruled duil and steady, ap- parently abandoned by the controlling powers and left tothe mercy of the predatory savages who gather in ‘scalps at tho profit of an eighth or flee from the loss of quarter with equal celerity, The market, like the seceding States previous to the unpleasantness, mani- fested a strong desire to be let alone, and most operators were inclined to grant the request, Hence th day might almost be described as a dies non, and although there was recorded a fair amount of transac- tions it proved a disappointing one to those who sought for profits beyond such as could be reaped from a Umited crop of fluetuations. Lake Shore, like the performing elephant in a me- magerie, was still billed as the chief attraction in the ‘nancial show to-day, but its antics are becoming anti- quated, and its grossness is no longer grotesque: hence the crowd which has for weeks past been a steady ap- plicant for reserved seata is beginning to slink away, and the entertainment ia gradually falling into the bands of deadbeads, who are employed to execute matched orders, or of the ‘claque,"’ which is in itself the clique. With this diminution of interest in the prevailing attraction—with neither Gould, Twenty-third street or Mr. Merryman to give zest to the entertaimment—what wonder that there should be returned a “beggarly ao count of empty boxes” as the result of the day’s per- formance. So we will dism!ss Lake Shore with the ‘single remark'that at the moment the pool is largely { foaded With the security, that there is no outlet for its | waters, and’ that stagnation may possibly rest upon its gurface tititifsonig unexpected Stock Exchange angel shall again trouble its depths. What eve haye written about Lake Shore may be as- sumed as the aay’s history of the rest of the market, Pacific Mail, Western Union and Ohios, which have ‘tly before the public in bulk of | been most ‘prominently before the Pablio in balk of (arme which failed yesterday are $1,720,000 and transactions, though passably active to-day, varied but slightly in the way of fluctuations, They were simply fet alone by outsiders, and whatever activity they manifested was due to the ‘‘chiffonniers” of the mar- ket, who turned over shares in the search for an eighth precisely as their confréres of the streot grab toto the dust heap in quest of shreds and patches, There is no particular cable information, foroign or domestic, except that our bonds are in considerable de- mand in the London market on orders from this side, which is an additional proof that capital is inclined even to cross the ocean for investment stocks !n pre ence to embarking in the speculative market offered to it here. The shindy between Tom Scott and Colonel! Hunting. ion, President of the Central Pacific Railroad, was con- tinued to-day before the Congressional Committee; but | the latter, as referees, have postponed their decision as to who shall handle the prize mney in the shape of subsidy until next week. lt would not break the nation’s heart if Congress should vote to leave “Poor Tom a-cold”’ and keep the tin in the Treasury. Mr. Betts, member of Assembly from this city, this morning introduced a bill in the Legislature proposing various pains and penalties to be inflicted upon sellers of ‘‘puts’’ and ‘calls’? on stocks. We are afraid Mr. Betts has found his name a disastrous trade mark in ‘Wall street operations and has bet bis money the ‘wrong way, else why desire to interfere with a busi- ness which is founded upon the fair and square system of “heads [ win, tails you lose ?”’ THE TOTAL TRANSACTIONS of the day aggregated 111,500 shares, which were dis- tributed among the active stocks as follows:—Western ‘Union, 8,000; Pacific Mail, 7,000; Erie, 23,200; Lake Shore, 29,200; Union Pacific, 700; Northwestern, 2,600; , 40. preferred, 1,600; St, Paul, 19,700; do, preferred, | 2,600; St. Joseph, 5,500; do. preferred, 8,900; Ohio and Mississippi, 14,100; Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph, 00; New York Central and Hudson, 300; Rock Island, 900; Wabash, 400; Atlantic and Pacific preferred, 400; Michigan Central, 1,200; New Jersey Central, 300; Pacific of Missouri, 400, and Panama, 200, OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. ‘The following table shows the opening, highest and , Sowest prices of the day;— Opening. On pledge of government bonds it loaned at4a3% per cent. At Chicago the monetary situation for last week is described by a local writer as follows:— “The prospect of change presented tn the cold weather lasted but a day or two, and local finances re- lapsed into their chronic condition of slow collections, alugg' h-marketing of country produce and consequont diminished supply of New York exchange, and a loan | market tight in the country and not easy in the city’ The unusual proportion of the means of Chicago banks that has been Joaned to the country leaves the supply of funda on hand not more than enough to meet the local demands, which are. themselves increased by the torpidity of country trade.” Yet the supply of New York exchange seems to be in excess of the domand, as indicated by the rates. The domestic exchangés on New York are quoted to- day as follows:—Savannah, Ga., } premium; Charles- ton, para a \; Cincinnati casier, par a 60c. pre- mium; New Orleans—commercial, %; bank, %; Chi- cago exchange, 60c. discount, Sterling exchange was steady, prime asking rates being 4.8544 and 4.9944; selling rates, 4.85 and 4.88 3¢ a 4.89; reichmarks, 95% 0 95% and 06% a 96%; cables, 9674 2 97; prime Paris, 5.13% a 5.11, TUR GOLD MARKET, All the sales to-day were made at 112%.
