GOLD 118 A 118 1-8. ‘Money in Good Request at 7 a 5 a 6 Per Cent— Government Bonds Very Strong—)ther Investment Securities Firm. Watt Streer, Moxpay, Jan. 24—6 P.M. After the hesitancy of a day or two back the party ‘wedded to higher prices showed no desire to be di- worced from to-day’s market, They had evidently made up their minds that higher prices could be ob- tained provided that ‘a long pull, a strong pull and a pull all ‘together’ could be agreed upon There was no doubt that the course of prices was naturally an upward one, and that a satisfactory market was sure to be obtained for the holdings of the past few days. ‘‘Sic itur ad astra’? would have been their exclamation had brokers been equally conversant with the dead languages as they are with live issues of the day, but failing this they regarded the position in & vernacular sense and translated their ideas {nto ‘push along—keep moving”? And this they did, picking out Lake Shore as their ‘“‘cheval de battaille,”” and riding him Into the middle of the fray. Lake Shore, by mutual consent, seemed to be ac- cepted as the war horse in to-day’s melée manége of the Gould-Osborn} party, who never drew bit or lost stirrup during the whole onset. Of course, under the old fashion of ‘follow my leader,” the rest of the market responded.to a lesser or greater degree and prices were marked up or receded as quotations were weak or strong. There scems to be a tacit understanding that for the time being Lake Shore ds to be the-ruler of the market, and other speculatives, ‘whether they will or no, unconsciously gave way to the favorite. Hence every security dealt in, in open mar- ket, ig to a certain extent affected by the course of Lake Shore, Western Union, Pacitlc Mail, Ohio and Missis- sippi, or other stocks take their tone from the promi- nent stock of the hour, and their quotations are affected amore or less favorably asthe leader gives the cue, Apropos of Lake Shore it may be remarked that the old Osborn Mills party were the chief purchasers, having an abiding faith in higher figures, or at least a hope that complacent bears will at some time or other re- eve them of their load. Outside of Lake Shore there ‘vas nothing to invite particular attention. A fairly active market backed up by undeniable strength and a belief in a better future is about the summing up of the day. Taken altogether the course of affairs may be interpreted as satisfactory for to-day and promising for to-morrow. The rumor that Mr. Vice President Scott—now in Europe—has negotiated a $5,000,000 loan jor the Pa- cific Mail Svaamship Company, the proceeds whereof aré to be used for purchasing and retiring the com- pany’s stock, if trae would undoubtedly bea good thing for the present holders, but it is scarcely necessary to eay that the rumor is without the slightest foundation | in tact. The weakness in Western Union to-day was ascribed to a report that the company recently bad made ‘‘spe- cial rates” with some large traders to secure their en- tire business, and that it might lead to a telegraphic war, resulting in lower rates on all business done, Numeroos financial bills to-day were introducedin Congress, the most important of which was one by Mr. Whitehouse, providing for the funding of legal tenders at par into a four per cent gold forty-year bond. Mr. Kel of Pennsylvania, offered a resolution to- day, which was adopted, calling on Secretary Bristow to report to the House the amount of gold and silver in the Treasury on the Sist of Decemver. It is reported that no decision was rendered by the Supreme Court im the granger suits to-day. . NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE SALES Mowpar, Jan. 24, 1874 BEFORE CALI—10 .
