+ FRANCIAL AND COMMERCEML, { A flight Flurry in the Stock Market—New ' | York Central to the Front—Prices Generally Firm. GOLD 118 A 118 1-8. ‘Money on Call Loans 5 and 6 Per Cent—Dis- counts Unchanged—Governments Strong and Railroad Bonds in Good Request. Wat Steer, } Frrpay, Jan. 21—6 P. M. ‘If Messrs. Moody and Sankey had been in the Wall ‘Street line of business, which tends to endanger men’s souls, instead of in the one which looks’ to save them, ‘they would bave been gratified at the revival which was significant to-day. It is not intended to convey the im- pression that brokers’ sins had by some divine mani- festation been ‘burnt and purged away’ during ‘the past night, but that their occupation exhibited new vitality and strength during to-day’s busi- j ness. The confident say 9 in -a future higher market gained fresh support from the efforts of the bulls who manifested a decided imtention no longer to confine their labors to two or three of the prominent stocks, but to give a boost to the whole list, Hence stocks like Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, St. Louis and Iron Mountain, Hannibal and St. Joseph, ‘Wabash, Central and Hudson and Rock Island received such share of attention as has not been youchsafed to | them for a longtime back. Of these the most nota- # dle was Central and Hudson, which suddenly sprung Into ,activity in the most unaccountable way and for time experienced a flurry that made the shorts shake in their shoos. The sum total of stock which changed hanas did not exceed 3,600 shares, and this trivial amount had the effect of seading up quota- ‘tions from 1083¢ to 11214, and back again to 11034, the (price at the close of business marking 110% bid. Of course there were all sorts of surmises as to the why and wherefore. It seems that Mr. Tom Creamer is before the Legislature and after the Commodore with a very sharp stick, in the shape of a charge that the company owe a preposterous number of millions sof dollars on the score of unpaid taxes. Mr. Creamer is thought to have reckoned with- out his host in thts transaction, and, hav- ‘ng invited a number of friends to banquet together on tho short side of the market, now finds ‘that he has not withal to pay the shot. In plain words, ‘the whole matter is looked upon as a stockjobbing wchome, devised to break the price of the stock and permit sundry shorts who are squirming under the wpressure to get out with as little damage as possible. How dangerous Central js to se!l short, and how little stock, in spite of its huge capital, is really available for speculative purposes, was fully demonstrated by ‘the sharp advance on the excessively moderate in- quiry. It was stated in this connection that the Commodore -was down town to-day in person and had given the sscrew a twist himself, but rather as a warning than as -® punishment, It was also circulated as a street rumor thatan option -on 8,000 shares expired to-day, which called for the de- * livery of that amount of stock, and that the short eller had come into the market asa purchaser. This is scarcely probable; for shares can be borrowed at two per cent bonus for carrying, aud operatives short of the stock would naturally prefer this method, with @ gradual picking up of what they necded, rather than to make a plunge into a stubborn market. Before leay- ing this subject reference is made to the fact, if our recollection serves us rightly, that this price of 11244 is the highest which the Centra! and Hudson has reached since the days of the consolidation. In maguitude of transactions Lake Shore still showed itself the biggest pea in the pod. There is a vague im- pression prevalent in the market that a prominent Rouse, the chief of which, m more senses than one, is @ solid man, amiable but adipos short of a long fine of this specialty. The abiding strength of the favorite and the spasmodic hitches upward which 80 oiten tuke place are presumed to be just so many in- i vitations or warnings to our ‘‘fat friend’? to cover. | But with the ge canny spirit of his forefathers he is as deaf to the biandishments of the enemy as he is fearless of their threats, Remembering the lesson 5 taught by the Northwest corner be 1s not likely to be ‘4 caught in the same box again, or even in the same company, of those * © © who hae wi’ Wallace bled. The culogies pronounced to-day at the capital over the dead Cwsar have turned the attention of Senators and Commoners from tinkering at finance bills and Pacific railroads to a contemplation, it is hoped, of their own latter end. Hence there has been nothing to disturb the price of money, which closed as low as B ver cent, or invite attention to the securities named. ’ By telegraph we have from San Francisco a report of ‘the financial condition of the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company for 1875, the chief feature of which is the statement that $16,731,653 of metal has been ex tracted during that period. Tho United States District Court at St. Louis, on the 20th, refused to-consider Bowman's bill for a separate receiver for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. A telegram from San Francisco states that at the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company the following gentlemen were elected as directors:—Solomon Heydenfeldt, Ed- ward Barron, J. C. Flood, W. S. O’Brien and John Mackay. All the capital stock, excepting 8,000 shares, was represented. A report that was made showed tha! the total receipts of the company for the year 1875 had been $17,060,886, of which $12,204,000 had been paid out for dividends. The ore in sight is very large and sufficient to produce 2,000 tous per day for many | yeurs. ‘Tho following extracts from a recent correspondence | between Mr. Joy, President of the Michigan Central Railroad, and the Chicago Board of Trade Committce on Railway Discriminations shows that-the freight ques- tion is not as well settled as it is here represented to | be, Mr. Joy, after complaining that the committee was taking testimony to prove that his statements relative to the comparative charges for freight by the road east and west of Chicago were incorrect, and citing in sup- portof his assertion figures from the annual report of different roads, continues as follows:— My statement, therefore, that roads from the West, leading to and bringing business to Chicago, were charg: ing twice what the roads east of Chicago were charging, is strictly true. Inthe case of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern the rates have been and are about the same as on the Michigan Central. On the Detroit and Milwaukee road the average rates have been less | On that road the through | than by any other roads, business has been done at 7.6 mills per ton per mile. This probably accounts for the condition of that com- ny. There is no section of the world on great routes, r may safely be said, where business is done so cheaply or at so low rates as between Chicago and New York and Boston. There has no road done business cheaper or so cheap im the West which is not bankrupt. These fagts speak plainly and strongiv. The roads east of Chicago are not getting rates upon which they can more than live. Any road that cuts under their rates dies bankrapt. And yet Chicago is attacking them for discriminating against it,as it oe os. The spectacle of the roads redaced almost to bankruptcy by tho low rates at which peiled to do business, and doing it at half which Western roads bring it to Chicago, and thon assailed savagely because they do not do it cheaper, is certainly a most striking exhibition of the unreason- ableness of popular clamor and of the newspaper as- ‘saults upon railway management and property. To which Mr. Baker, Secretary of the committee, re- | plies :— Mr, J. F. Joy, President Micbigan Central Railroad, Detroit:— Dear Sin—Your favor of the 15th inst. is at hand and | noted. You seem to misapprebend the work and object | of our committee. To begin with, we have not taken | any testimony with a view to proving sayshing you said was ‘‘not true.”’ We are secking facts wherever we can find them with the hope of reporting some remedy Fat discriminations against the city. We distinctly stated to you that we made uo complaints of rates irom here Eastward being too bigh, only be we have to pay more than the country on eit! if us, and to-day your road is offering to sbij Milwaukee rates that Jac the throu, at 41 cents per hundred from to New York, while you claim 1t would bankrupt the road to it from bere for a Chi shipper at less. per 100, This is butone of the many instances of dis- crimination that have come to the know! of this committee, and which shows that if a ular clamor’? exists here there is some reason for We consider that your interests are identical with out own and that you should co-operate with us in finding a remedy for evils, the existence of which you admit, and ‘which are as damaging to your road as to the busi- ness of Chicago.
