The Barnums of the Stock Exchange’for the week past have set up their show and stirred up their animals. Tho entertainment of ull market has been duly ad- Vertised and offered t. .. comers. Tiekets of admissivn ve been proffered without cost and the public has been respectfully invited to at- tend. But like many projected schemes of a like na- ture, in spite of posters and attractive advertisements, outsiders have shown but little curiosity to assist at the exhibition, and there has scarce enough money been taken in at the doors to pay expenses, ‘The illustration we have indulged in pretty nearly figures out the condition of the Stock Exchange market today, All the blandishments of a vigorous and ad- vancing market have been offered to the public, but there has been but little response, Professionals have tossed the ball from one to another, as do players in the tull ofa yame in a cricket match, but it has fallen to the grouna at the end. So have fancy stogks been passed about for the past week, but players have become tired, und no new as- pirants for hovors are hungering either to bat'or bowh Consequently, the market to-day is inert and passive, confined in its transactions to the struggles for “‘scalps,’” and utterly without interest, “devoid of form and void,” Nevertheless, the official list of sales shows very considerable amount of activity, which might at first blush be attributea to an increased outside inter- est, but an inquiry at the offices of old established com- mission firms compels us to the behef that as yet no general desire to trade in other than strictly invest- ment securities has manifested itself, THY STOCK MARKET. Senator Edmunds, of Vermont, undoubtedly will be surprised to nd himself assailed in an evening journal as a blackmailer of Jay Gould, because he to-day intro- duced in the United States Senate two resolutions call- ing upon the Attorney Goneral and the Secretary of the ‘Treasury for information as to what steps, if any, had been taken to enforce against the Pacific Railroads the laws approved March 3, 1873, and June 22, 1874, look- ing tothe collection trom the companies of five per cent of their net earnings. Both resolutions were agreed to. For once there is some hope of these mo- nopolies being compelled to acknowledge “that the people have some rights which they are bound to re- spect.” ‘The Committee on Appropriations heard Representa- tive Buckner this morning against making an appro- priation to meet the interest on the 3-65 District Columbia bonds, Members of the committeo say there areample funds in the District Treasury to meet the interest without an appropriation from Congress. Washington advices also indicate considerable earnestness onthe part of Congressmen in the matter of a postal telegraph system, Several bills will, it is said, be presented, and one was introduced to-day by Mr. Sargent, The sum of $200,000 coin was shipped for the East at San Francisco to-day. The production of the California Quicksilver mines fer 1875 amounts to 39.542 flasks. The length of the Sutro tunnel is now 11,840 feet. The annual report of the Iaiiroad and Warehouse Commissioners of Illinois, embracing returns from tifty corporations, shows an tncrease in freight re_ ceipts of $3,548,677 over 1874, and in passenger re- ceipts of $3,913,598. The total earnings of the fifty companies in 1875 were $105,945,788—an increase over 1874 of $9,128,920, This, however, is on an increased mileage, Rumors were in circulation yesterday and to-day to the effect that the qifliculties between the Panama Railroad and Pacific Mail Steamship companies had been settled. The authorities of the Panama Company state that thero has been no settlement made and that none is probable. Ata meeting of the several coal carrying and pro- ducing interests, held at the office of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company in this city to-day, it was agreed that in consequence of the overproduction and accumulation of unsold coal upon the market an entire suspension of al! mining of anturacite coal for five weeks, from February 7to March 11, inclusive, be or- dered, Messrs, Gordon Bros,, florists, of Broad street, to-day sent to the Stock Exchange a basket of elegant flowers, to be raffled tor and the proceeds to be devoted to chari- table purposes, It was first put up at $210; the win-’ ner again selling it at auction it brought $30, when it was resold again and again, The total proceeds, reach- ing $300, were devoted to St, John’s Guild. The liabilities of Joseph Gaury & Co,, of London, England, whose failure was announced yesterday, are Bot so heavy as at first reported. They will not exceed £50,000 sterling. ‘The liabilities of Meesrs. Samuel Radford & Son, of Liverpool, the grain merchants, whose failure was an- nounced yesterday, are+ about £136,000, and their as- sets, £154,000, Their creditors took acceptance in full, payable in three, six and nine months.
