OUR WATER SUPPLY. (CONTINUED FROM EIGHTH PAGE.) structions under the resolution of the Common Council, “has been well and faithfully periormed in the sort space of five months, it shallever be my pride and satisfaction if this ‘work shall lead to the ado; ‘pt of the measures herein ‘recommended, and whic! lated to confer ‘untold benefits upon our er Very respectfully, FITZ JOHN PORTER, Commissioner of Public Works. The surveys and plans alluded to have been also sub- ‘titted to the Mayor. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Irregular and the Market Somewhat Feverish. GOLD 112 3-4 A112 38-8. Money on Call Supplied at from 6 to 4 Per Cent—Investment and Government Se- curities in Fair Demand—For- eign Exchange Dull, Wat. Srreer, Wepyespay, Jan, 10-6 P.M } The hesitancy which overtook the advancing market terday was still a notable feature of to-day, Stocks fell, rose and fell again, and flopped generally in such yan uncertain way that neither bulls nor bears were sure of the ground they trod on, Ax usual, Lake Shore was ‘the observed of all observers, but rather disappointed interested parties in its pertivacity in refusing to move much from opening prices, It would appear that the clique who have so vigorously bullied the stock for the ‘last ten days have transferred what they could of their ‘Load to the humiliated bears, and that the rest of their holdings must be carried along until a new advance movement, with its attendant short interest, will enable them to realize, There were cortainly signs to-day that Mr. Merry, an was again inclined to go in training as a buyer, wpreparatory to a public announcement of ‘Here we al again,” andan equally significant suggestion on the (part of the sealskin coat coterie that the weight of Gake Shore was alittle too much to bear under the at and burden of the day.”” It may thus be suggested that the pool just now 1s at Sixes and sevens, with an agreement to disagree well ‘understood and a segregation of interests which allows ach member of the clique to act upon his own hook. This theory being assumed us correct we have a ‘clew to the vacillating course of prices in fake Shore, which at one time assumed ‘the strength of Hercules and at another the weakness -ofakition. In the end the Greek hero proved no more successful with his twelve labors than did the fabled mountain with its one, for operators “sizing” the movement on the principle of ex pede Herculem, sold ‘the favorite down and closed up the quotation at the dowest figure of the day. Western Union and Pacific Mail, Byronieally, might We stigmatized as arcades ambo, tor they did not offer ‘to either bull or bear more than a half per cent oppor- tunity for atimo during the whole session, and were, ‘therefore, called names, but not always in language as “classic as that of the poot. Ohio and Mississippi common shares were again in a ‘spasmodic way—one of the features of the market— ‘and if the company’s statement bas not been through spot! the broth) the stock merits the attention itis ameeting with. * Union Pacific seems inclined to shake off the soporific tnfluence under which’ it bas lain for some time past ‘and was unusually sprightly tp-day, though at tne expense of a falling off in the market quotation, Whether the crop of prairie dogs, out of which the y May expect to earn its next dividend, has falien short, or whether Congress 1s feared as standing fa bostife” array, is uot clear, but the result is as we Dave stated. Erie was as inert as it has been for many days past tn spite of the portentous miormation wired to the market that ‘Judge Donobue has granted on application permission to Hugh J. Jewett, Receiver of the Erie Railway, to purchase from the funds of the company Ofty shares of the National Stockyard Company’s stock and ten bonds of the same at par.” What effect the proposed issuing of moral pockethandkerchicfs to the employés of the company will have upon its bonded debt is still a mooted question. According to advices by cable the rate of money at ‘the Bank of England is not likely to be reduced at to- morrow’s meeting of governors, as the old lady of Threadneedle street is rather Josing than accumulating the precious metals. Under the existing spirit of our taoney market financial matters are not likely to be influenced by any ordinary action on the part of the bank. As a matter of interest to holders of Quicksilver Mining stock it may be stated that the yicld of the ‘metal from the principal mines of the world for the year 1875 amounted to 86,400 flasks, an amount which should in all conscience relieve looking glass backers and thermometer makers from all anxiety as to a short supply, a5 well as to leave a fair margin for medicinal ‘Purposes. To-day, however, the impression prevails that any reduction from the present rate of 5 percent is improbable,” The Lon- don Times this morning, in its financial article, reports the demand for money as very quiet at the Bank of England, and there is but little doing outside, All the suitable gold arriving in the country is taken for ex- port, and there is little probability, if any, of expected arrivals going into the bank, as all foreign exchanges are adverse and bills are in demand. The London advices further report consols and United States bonds firm. Among the latter ten-forties were especially firm, advancing 3 por cent, compared with the closing quotations yesterday. The rate for money at the Stock Exchange on government securl- ties is 4 per cent; £10,000 bullion were withdrawn from the Bank of England on balance to-day. On Tuesday the Herato pubiished, and perhaps with- out due caution, an extract of what purported to be an “official” report of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad’s earnings jor the frst week in January. It now appears that the officials of the company in this city have no knowledge of the report or of the source from which it emanated, While they decline to pronounce it a fraud, they admit that it is peculiar that any parties in New York should bave received earlier information than themselves. Will the Stock Exchange investigate a matter which now appears to have been a fraud in the interest of stockjobbing operators? Meanwhile, it is intimated by the real friends of this stock that higher prices will be established, Areport from Wasbington says that the Syndicate have sold all the new fives they subscribed for and will , make final settlements with the Treasury February 1 and February 16. ‘The February coin interest to come out of the Treas- | ury will not be over $6,000,000, and a large part of this belongs to Europe, Itisannounced from London that on the 7th inst, there were obtained by forgery twenty £50 Bank of England notes numbered from 33,441 to 33,450 inclu- give, and from 36,561 to 35,560 inclusive, dated March 18, 1875. ‘The Bank of Prussia to-day reduced its minimum rate of discount to 5 per cent. ‘The failure of the large grain merchants of London, England, Messrs. Samutl Radford & Sons, was an- nounced to-day.’ Their abilities are reported heavy, | but with assets believed te be ample to pay in full. Washington telegrams announce the arrival of Mr. | | Thomas A. Scott, presumably with designs upon the | United States Treasury in aid of the Southera Pacific | Railroad. The presence of Baron Rothschild in Washington and his call upon the Secretary of the Treasury is thought to indicate an early negotiation of the 43; percent funded bonds of the United States. The shipment East from San Francisco to-day com- Prises $19,690 coin and $28,000 bullion. The last neading in the new Bergen tunnel (Morris and Essex Railroad) was broken through this morning.
