NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, JANUARY 18, 1876. PINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Btocks Active, Strong and Irregular—A Field | Day for the Bulls. GOLD STEADY AT Money on Call Loans 7 Per Cent—Foreign Exchange Quiet—Government and Railway Bonds Firm. Wat Strexr, Mopar, Jan. 176 P.M. } ‘The bullish feeling which nas imspirited the market for the last ten days was continued with even greater briskness this morning. There was a reveiilé at the opening and a subsequent fanfaronade, which intimi- dated bears as much as it enlivened bulls, The entire stock list, as it were, took the bit in its mouth and ran away with the market, Prices that were considered high on Saturday were low by comparison to-day; grizzlies were as cheap ag bear’s meat at a buckster’s stall, while the opponents were held as ‘“‘recherche”’ as a baron of beef in Old England’s pristino days. It does not follow, however, that the most succulent dish is the most digestible one, and there are some who broke fast at the first table to-day that regretted their indulgence afierward. ‘The markct in its course was a species of Montaigne Russe, and slipped down and surged upward again by mere force of gravitation. Encouraged by the success ef Saturday, and stimulated by the favorable view of things expressed by press and public, there was a strong purchasing clement early exhibited, A Tittle later on things began to drag, and purchasers at lower prices, who had simply gone in for om turn, manifested —con- Biderable alacrity to dispose of their ventures and se- cure the nimble sixpence which they had in hand Father than wait fur the slow shilling which was in futuro. Under this selling movement quotations re- ceded somewhat, but quickly recovered under the fostering aid of the bull manipalators, who boldly bid prices up to the highest Ogures of the day. From this point there was another set back, which see-saw move- ment closed up the work of the session. On the whole the manipulators for a rise may be congratulated upon having done a good day’s work, In most cases stocks closed at an advance over the opening, and a good market was made for accumula- tions of the last few days. Still, with all the hurrah and flourish of trumpets, the expert can yet discern ‘but little more than a broker's market im the specula- tive shares of which we have written. These inse- curities are still looked upon by outsiders as “all my | fancy painted her,” and it can hardly be otherwise than that they must still be carried by their holde entilsuch time as a general revival of the country prosperity shall enhance their intrinsic value and thus effer a market, or until the outside public shall be :n- pculated sufficiently with the old gambling spirit to uke them off thelr hands.
