FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Stocks Very Firm---A Sharp Advatce Along the Line. GOLD HIGHER AT 1138. Money on Call Loaned at 4 and 5 Per Cent— Discounts Unchanged—A Favorable Bank Statement—Investment Securities Firm. WALL Street, Saturpay, Jan, 15—6 P. M. There was a cheerfulness exhibited in the stock market today which was notable dy its contrast to the depression of many past weeks, An abiding faith in the budding of a ‘cw prosperity seems to have seized upon the en- tire stockjobbing fraternity, There is a trust in the speedy advent of a spring tide of successful trade which leads to the belief that !t has only to be taken at the flood to lead on to fortune. Certainly matters look to-day as if the fickle goddess were certainly wooed and won—that the ‘‘winter of our discontent”? was speedily to be made a season of ‘glorious summer,” and that for the future there would be nothing but sun- beams and a basking therein, Unfortunately, a single swallow does not make a summer, and the bird of promise which has been flit- ting before us for a day or two past may yet disappear as suddenly ashe came. Up to midday the market hung sluggish, with an inclination to a lower basis; but about this time there was apparent a decided influx of | orders to purchase Lake Shore, and the quotation was rapidly advanced from 6434 to 67, The Gould clique was prominent and fostering this advance, and at one time it almost seemed as though there were a ‘‘corner’” threatening. This sharp rise was partially due to the purchase of shares which had been sold short on the guarantee of ‘calls’? sold by Mr. 5. 8 Munroe (whose failure was officially announced), and partially to the report industriously circulated that Commodore Vanderbilt was a large buyer of the security. As this gentleman is notorious for his practice of purcbasing a stock which has already bad its fifteen per cent. rise, and at the same time con- fiding his course of action to the public at large, itis quite possible that the rumor was weil founded. At any rate, the stock was as hot a favorite as it has been for many aday past, and tairly distanced all other competitors in the running. There were new life and animation in the Mississippi and Ohio common stock, which has been inert at almost unvary ing quotations tor along time past. Itdid not clearly appear whether the activity was due to an awakening of its Montreal friends, who stick to it closer than a brother, or, to what seems to be the fact, that the road is doing exceptionally well, realizing, as we are informed, more satisfactory earnings than have marked its history for years past. The Northwestern and St, Paul stovks exhibited but limited dealings com- pared with those of a day or two back and prices were not materially changed. There was only about one-half per cent variation in quotations for Western Union and there appear to be no party spirited or energetic enough to twang the lyre which might be constructed of its poles and wires. There was a fractional rise in Pacific Mail, which is the prelude, we are promised, of important doings next week. THE STOCK MARKET. The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day aggre- gated 192,500 shares, which were distributed among active stocks as follows:—New York Centra! and Hud- son, 2,118; Eric, 3,100; Lake Shore, 80,610; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 100; Northwestern, 5,800; do. preferred, 100; Rock Island, 1,495; Pacific Mail, 621; St Paul, 15,500; do. preferred, 8,300; Ohios, 24,800; Western Union, 12,150; Union Pacific, 1,050; Panama, 621; Michigan Central, 13,260, OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. fhe following table shows the opening, highest ang lowest prices of the day:— Opening. THR BANK STATEMENT. ‘The bank statement of averages for the past week r fects the movement noted in the Hrratn a few days since—to-wit, that of exchanging national bank notes for legal tenders through the redemption bureau. The decrease in the item of loans shows that the mercan- tile interest is still im the throes of stagnation, The Joss in gold may be accounted for by the larger pay- ments for customs than were the disbursements by the Sub-Treasury, The following 1s a comparison of the ‘Dank averages for red past ‘cae rie Jan. ‘ _#808"044, 000 $26, 7262.10 Dee. a, 391,900 Loans...
