FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Stocks To-Day Irregular, with a Halting Tendeney—The Tension Beeom- ing Too Strong. GOLD ADVANCED TO 113. Money on Call Loans Easy at 6 a 5 Per Cent— Investment Securities Firm—Govern- ments in Fair Request. Wat. Srrext, } Pripay, Jan. 14-6 P, M. Most unexpestediy, Stock “Exchange circles were treated toa sensation to-day at the very opening of business—a sensation which brought nothing but the sincerest regret and sympathy in its train. The an- nouncement of the iailure of Messrs, Dickenson & Co. | Was not only a surprise to the strect but a fact to be Fegretted. Looked upon as a firm of undoubted worth, and carrying with them the esteem and confidence of the entire Gnancial community, their being obliged to Succumb to the pressure of adverse circumstances was appreciated as a veritable misfortune. It appears that Messrs, Dickenson & Co, have re- mained short of stocks dealt in on the Stock Exchange for along time back, refusing to accept profits when areceding market offered an opportunity, and that they have besides been holders of securities which have shown a slow-but certain decline. They are re- ported to hold, for-instance, some 3,000 shares of Can- ton at a cost price of nearly par, which cannot be sold to-day at 35, and imaddition it is aflirmed that they were Iprgely interested in Colqyado mining shares, on which ruinous losses were made sequent to the Big Bonanza busmess of last sammer. Some 5,000 shares were bought in for the concern ander the rule, and:tho sbares thus dealt in embraced nearly every active.stock on the list. Under general circumstances s failure of this im- portance, from the-mere moral pressure which attends disaster, should have weakened the existing market. The contrary, however, was the case, and prices ad- vanced rather than receded. A moment's reflection will explain the reason why. In the first place, the de- mand for stocks created by the necessity of clos- Paul, M. 122; orm, ‘mg up short gomtracts upon the part of Messrs, Dickenson & Co. not only created & considerable bidding ‘‘under the rule,” ‘but compelled extensive purchases in the shape of pri- vate settlements. In a word, stocks which had been previously purchased on time options, or held on ‘‘bor- rowed and lent” account, tailing to be delivered or returned, had to be “bought in,’? and thus for the time being there was a new customer 10 the field whose demands were imperative and whoso bids had to be supplied. In the second place, the few persist- ent bears which still exist were inclined to look upon ‘he disaster as an awful warning, and esteeming a @eath-bed repentance better than none at all, pitched tm without benetlt of clorgy, preferring to seek salvation in a balance at bank rather than in the virtue of the viaticum, So there was a hoist given to things which was in a measure artificial, and the market rose ona ‘double entendre,” which was scarcely guessed eutattheend, Lake Shore, which under its setback of yesterday in poiut of popular interest, was like the “fond stricken:deer” of the poem, to-day returned to the ‘bosom’ of its former friends, who caressed and fondled it upon its legs again. Restored to its position as first favorite, it was closely followed by the Western stocks, eminently those of Chicago, Milwaukee and St, Paul. Gift prize pack - ages warranted to contain a 1d per cent dividend in bonds having been distributed to the possessors of the preferred stock, the Aoi polloi, or common stock hold- ers, began to think themselves neglected, and, like a pack of hungry hounds, have been biting at the legs of the direction ever since. So, as a sop to Cerberus, a sumor {s started that a 8 per cent dividend is to be paid ‘to holders of common stock, and the canine contingent 4s satisfied to bay the moon no more, ‘There was.a moderato flirtation with Union Pacific ‘to-day; but, as Mr, Gould’s brokers were not present to inquire about “intentions,” it is to be presumed notbing serious was intended. The dealings were in about 1,500 shares, and the price at the close some- thing off of the opening. Michigan Centralas a modest stock was largely dealt In, 5854 a 6144 being the extreme rates, with the closing price the best of the day, There is a large short inter- est in this specialty, and what with certificates for loaning purposes scarce and a reported uot increase in ‘traffic for November of nearly $200,000, bears do not feel entirely comfortable, Without particular reference to single stocks, the general market may be referred to as extremely strong and favoring a iurther advance. ‘THR SALES TO-DAY amounted to 176,000 shares, which were divided among active stocks as follows:—New York Central and Hud- son River, 1,350; Erie, 2,700; Lake Shore, 63,316; Chi- fago and Pittsburg, 185; Northwestern, 15,600; do, preferrod, 2,400; Rock Island, 1,650; Pacifle Mail, 18,700; St. Paul, 26,240; do. preferred, 7,970; Obios, 11,200; Western Union, 9,350; Wabash, 2,550; Union Tacife, 1,500; C., C, and I.
