FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘A Strong and Active Stock Market--- Prices Generally Higher. GOLD 1131-8 A 118. Firmness in Government Bonds—Railway and Investment Bonds in Fair Request—Money on Call 7 Per Cent, Currency and Gold. Wat Sraeer, Mowpay, Jan. 10—6 P. u} ‘The Romans were apparently unacquainted with pyrotechnics, for we have hunted Webster's una- bridged through and through and find no Latin quota- tion that will serve the purpose of illustration, Yet we had a perfect corruscation of fires—green, white and red—at the Stock Exchange to-day, Whether ngers were burnt or not will probably appear in to- morrow’s bulletin, There was a general burying of the hatchet by both bulls and bears, supposing that these -quadrupeds were sufficiently up in the history of “‘pater patria” to reverence the emblem. In fact, the genus ‘‘ursa’’ seemed for the moment extinct, There was ag little trace of them left at three o'clock as there is of the extinct mastodon. Like the school ‘Doy’s Slate, after school 1s over, the species was wiped ont, Stocks went allone way, and “‘excelsior” {s the Latin ‘word which defines the direction, though we trust the market will not bring up !n as disastrous a snowbank as did our ventaresome hero of'the poem, The centennial oar !g expected to be the cure all of no end of financial maladies, and ts looked up to with as much curiosity -and awe as have fleen the frequently recurring centen- nial nurses of Washington. Wo trust that the wish will be something more than father to the thought, and that there will be developed a more reliable result than happened in the case of the aforesaid ‘aunties,’ who unfailingly turned out black but bogus. As usual Lake Shore was the man at the wheel, and the vessel of speculation bowled along obedient to his behest, But it wus a case of a ‘free sheotand a fow- ing sail,” witb a clean course of plenty of water and ‘a haven where we would be’ of higher prices duad ahead. Taking Lake Shore as the leader the rematader of the market followed 1p its wake with more or less speed, as Sgures elsewhere show, making a successful voyage of it until nearly the very end. Jate in the day, shorts being covered and the market pretty well tired, quota- tions were not so buoyant, and prices were marked down somewhat at closing of the Board. The compara- tive weakness at the finish was probably due partially to the stringency of money, 1-52 nad interest being bid, and partially to vague rumors that a large sugar house vas in trouble. TE SALES OF STOCKS to-day aggregated about 190,000 shares, which were distributed umong the most active securities as fol- tows:—New York Central and Hudéon River, 1,182; Erte, 2,150; Lake Shoré, $0,200; Cleveland and Pitts buPg, 319; Northwestern, 1,950; Northwestern pro- ferred, 1,400; Rock Island, 3,795, Pacific Mail, 33,200 St. Punl, '5j0607 St Paal preferred, 8,370; Obios, 1,400; Western. Call loans at the Stock Exchange on pledge of ordi- nary collatorals to-day have again commanded higher rates, ranging from 7 per cent currency and gold to 1-92 per diem bonus, in addition to the legal interest. Considerable sums were placed at 1-64 bonus, but the ‘inal rates were 7 per cent currency to gold. Itisthecon- tinued logs of legal tenders by our banks that ia affect- ing the market rates for movey, as well as the nervous disposition of a few lenders as to the class of security offered-and tne stability of present prices, It 1s idle to disguise the fact that among conservative people there ts a belief that more than one corporation, aided by a good credit, is still discounting a possible. futare in the payment of unearned dividends, and the impression creates timidity in the placing of funds at the disposal of the stock brokers, Domestic exchange on New York rated as follows in the several cities named :— Savannab, discount, large amouuts; Charleston exchange, buying 5-16 discount, selling par; New Orleans, commercial, 7-16; bank, \; Cincinnatt firm, 80¢ @ $1 prom. ; St. Louis, par to 50c. prem.; Chicago, 75¢. prem, Sterling exchange was quict at 4.85 and 4.89 for long and short bills respectively, with actual Dusiness at 4 concession from these rates. ‘THR UNITED STATES TREASURY.
