8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Pa Stocks Lively for the Day, but Comparatively Lower—The Bulls Attempt to Realize. GOLD FIRM AT 3 A U3 1-4) Money on Call Loans Ayain Hardens—Rates To- Day 7 Per Cent, Gold, with a Benus— Investment Securities Strong. Wann beri Sarorpay, Jan, 8—6 P.M. “Abusus non tollit uswn’’—translation, “abuse ‘s Rot an argument against proper use.” The human in- tellect has its mental characteristics quite as strongly marked as has the body its physical ones, Muscles and sinews taught to perform @ work of daily re- curring sameness Soon become unfit to accomplish any other labor, The functions of the mind, con- tinuonsly bent upon the achievement of one object, speedily become numb and incapable of appreciating topics foreign to their daily task. The stock jobbing mind is particularly liable from the nature of iis pursuit to jog along im this cloggy rut; hence the money editor occasionally finds it difficult to write down to the level of his readers, As they can- not comprehend, they contemn, aud by natural taste would prefer an arlicle written in the slang of the slums to one expressed in decent English, There aro “grubbers”’ in the money market who probably began life grubbing in the fields, and the plough tail lost valuable followers when they changed their vocation, The valuable information imparted by a morning Journal that the clouds of shaken confidence and com- mercial depression had all passed away under the genial Deams of yesterday's sunny stock market turns out in the light of to-day’s history to be less reliable than we had hoped for. We propose briefly to sketch to-day’s history — Yosterday’s business closed up 80 firmly that great anticipations were indulged in of a strong and active market at the opening this morning. Nor were dealers disappointed. Lake Shore and Pacific Mail were in demand at the commencement, severally at 614{ and 88, and moved up during the first two hours to 62% and 39. There was considerable anxiety on the part of shorts to cover and by the small deaiers, who were as full of “points, furnished by the bull cliques, as a paper of pins. Tne Twenty-third street party seem to have taken the ecare also, and materially assisted the rise, al- though later in the day they partially reversed their action, A little atter midday It became apparent that there was a screw loose somewhere, which, with singu- Jar propriety, was found in the shares of that company which is always having screws loose in its ships—viz Pacific Mail. At soon became evident that the Gould people were skipping out of their stock with all the nimbleness of Mary's little lamb, while the Twenty-third street party to help make things pleasant, “came down like th wolf on the fold,” and the stock came down likewise from 89 to 36 At the same time Union Pacific, which for days past hae been as dead as a dog ina ditch, or only betraying @ momentary gleam of existence when sham orders to buy fractional lots for investment were sent in, sud- | | | consolidated sinking funds at 80}g a 80%. NEW YORK HERALD, 21.06 per cent of the currency deposits, against 21.66 per cent last week. THE MONEY MARKET. For a Saturday the money market for call loans bas ruled unexpectedly firm, ‘The rate for loans on m cellanecus stock collaterals was 6 per cent currency to 7 per cent gold, with exceptional loans at 1-64 bonus The close was madeat 7 carrency to.7 per cent gold. The omestic exchanges on New York continued to rule siust this centre at all the Southern points, while the ¥ estern exchanges favora return of currency. The quotations to-day were as follows;—Savannah and Charleston, 4 per cent discount; New Orleans, % @ 7-16; Cimeinnatl, 75 cents per $1,000 premium; St Louis, par to 50 cents, and Chicago, par to cents, Sterling exchange was firm, with but httle business, at 4.85 and 4.89 for long and short bilis respectively. THE GOLD MARKBT, Gold opened at 113 ana advanced to 11344. The rates paid for carrying were 3 to 6 per cent. The specie shipments for the weell were $678,043 46, of which $200,000 was gold coin. The imports of specie for the week were $40,704, of which $20,000 was gold coin. The specie shipment to Europe to-day amounts to $409,000, of which $209,000 is silver, CLEARING HOUSE STATEMENT. Whatever bad become of the great army of supporters, who read with avidity the statement of perpetually increasing earnings and draw their eight per cent dividends, did not appear, except that they were conspicuous by their absence; 0 Pacific Mail and Union Pacific, being a mongrel sot | of Siamese twins In the aspect of business brothers, took water together. The occasion of this result Is to be found in the in- dustriously disseminated report that the Panama Rail- road would shortly put a line of steamers on both coasts, and had officially notified the Pacific Mail Com- pany of their intention, In order that there should be no unpleasant contempt of court proceedings in view of the injunction now pending, rumor has !t that the lune will be establiehed under the fiction of an individ- wal enterprise, Added to this came a report trom Washington that a bill would be presented to Congress, the intent of which would be to force Union Pacific to furnish certain guarantees to the government to se- pure the payment of its interest, Bo these inseparable Gemini got black eyes together, and the rest of the market went home with bandaged brows and generally out at knees and elbows.
