We propose briefly to sketch to-day’s history — Yosterday’s business closed up 80 firmly that great anticipations were indulged in of a strong and active market at the opening this morning. Nor were dealers disappointed. Lake Shore and Pacific Mail were in demand at the commencement, severally at 614{ and 88, and moved up during the first two hours to 62% and 39. For a Saturday the money market for call loans bas ruled unexpectedly firm, ‘The rate for loans on m cellanecus stock collaterals was 6 per cent currency to 7 per cent gold, with exceptional loans at 1-64 bonus The close was madeat 7 carrency to.7 per cent gold. The omestic exchanges on New York continued to rule siust this centre at all the Southern points, while the ¥ estern exchanges favora return of currency. The quotations to-day were as follows;—Savannah and Charleston, 4 per cent discount; New Orleans, % @ 7-16; Cimeinnatl, 75 cents per $1,000 premium; St Louis, par to 50 cents, and Chicago, par to cents, Sterling exchange was firm, with but httle business, at 4.85 and 4.89 for long and short bilis respectively. THE GOLD MARKBT, Gold opened at 113 ana advanced to 11344. The rates paid for carrying were 3 to 6 per cent. The specie shipments for the weell were $678,043 46, of which $200,000 was gold coin. The imports of specie for the week were $40,704, of which $20,000 was gold coin. The specie shipment to Europe to-day amounts to $409,000, of which $209,000 is silver, CLEARING HOUSE STATEMENT. Advices from London are to the effect that United States government bonds are quiet but steady, but that consols are 3¢ to 44 per cent lower. The following are the latest quotations:—Consols, for money, 9334 a 935; ; do,, for account, 93%4¢. ; 1865 bonds, old, 104% a 1045; ; 1867 bonds, 107% @ 108; ten-forty bonds, 106 a 1065s; new fives, 105 a 105%; Erie, 144 a 143. RAILROAD BONDS, Railroad bonds were active and in the main strong and higher. Harlem coupon firsts rose to 116, Chicago and Northwestern consolidated coupon gold bonds bronght 8634. advanced, La Crosse division selling at 964; a 96 L and M, division at 86, C. and M. division at 91, and Michigan Central sevens rose to 101i, do, eights to 113%, | and Hannibal and St. Joseph convertible to 83, Erie second sold at 103%. The Pacific tssues declined to 10454 for Centrals, 10334 for Union firsts and 93}¢ for sinking funds, At the close the last named advanced to 943g. Morris and Essex consolidated firsts sold at 10634.
