FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL A Strong Stock Market—An Ad- vance Along the Line, ‘GOLD FIRM AT 112 7-8. Money on Call 5 and 6 Per Cent—Activity in Railway Bonds—Governments Quiet and Strong. Wate Street, Frrpay, Jan, 16 P.M ‘There is no class of the community more cosmopoli- «an than stock brokers, When Fortune {s propitious her gifts are eagerly epent in the quest of ‘‘fresh fields and pastures new,"’. The ‘old country,” as England is fondly called, naturally as by imelination, invites the excursionist, and London town is the epitome of the Empire, Stock brokers are thorough in the way of sightseeing, and conscientiously visit every attraction, from the Tower to the Zoo and from Madame Tussaud to Cremorne Gardens. As a rule they rather prefer Cremorne. There is more of the real flesh and blood and less of the wax work, and there are incidentals which strict Plymouth church people might call naughty, but which errant sheep nib- bie atas nice, Besides, there are fireworks, rockets, Catharine wheels and a grand explosion at the end. The stock market was like Cremorne to-day, Busi- ness was ushered in by a moderate show of stock pyro- technics, which increased in brilliancy as the day grew on, and finished up with a display more splendid than the Board room has witnessed for many a week past. Every stock on the list, toa less or greater degree, scin- tillated with the hot spark of an advancing market. There was an eagerness to buy that seized upon both bulls and bears—the former actuated by a thirst for higher prices, the latter by an eagerness to abandon paw sucking for the nonce and scuttle intoa safe cover. ‘Thero was a general rise all along the list, Lake Shoro and Western Union showing the most spirited advance. Western Union has stubbornly resisted a fall for some days past, which seems to give color to the opin- jon that a new pool has been formed, in the interest of which stock bas been quietly picked up at lower prices, The point to bay has been carefully dissemi- nated to-day, which would seem to bear out the cor- rectness of the above opinion, as well as to suggest the idea that the clique might be willing to let in their friends at present figures, even if they themselves had to furnish them with the stock, Panama betrayed a transient activity, being bid up nearly 10 per cent from yesterday's prices—viz., from 127% to 136. On stock offering, the quotation fell off to 13334, which was the best bid at the close. The Gould people are very considerably short of Panama on 60 day Options which will shortly mature, and the “hist- ing’’ process to-day was evidently instigated by the | amiable desire to make things pleasant for the option sellers, Pacific Mail indulged in a see-saw movement with Panama, and receded in price as the latter advanced, bat straggled up again at the close under the belief that it was more frightened than hurt. Other stocks got better or worse as the favorites of the market showed the lead, and we refer elsewhere to Ogures which mark the changes. Erie was exceptionally dull, in spite of the two mar- kets of London and New York, which are supposed to influence it, and acted much like a racehorse that has seen its best days, which though Bishoped at one end and gingered at the other strenuously refuses to lift either head or tail under the pressure of controlling circumstances, THE SALES TO-DAT. RAILROAD BONDS were unusually active, the demand being in striking contrast to the ephemeral operations in fancy stocks. It has often been written in this column that, while ordi- Bary speculation may not cease in stock circles, the real element of strength and the truest !llustration of the growth of the country would be found in the pur- chase by legitimate investors of frst class railway securities and their consequent advance. That all of the money resulung from the recent disbursement of dividends has not found {ts way into rotten stocks {s fairly shown by the increasing activity In this bond market. It is one ofthe healthy signs of the times Central Pacifics, San Joaquin branch, sold at 94, and do., California and Oregon branch, at 92};—an advance of about 1 per cent in both cases. Land grants rose to 97 and firsts sold at 105, Union Pacifics wero firm at 103% for firsts, 101% for land grants and 953g for sinking funds, Chicago and North- western issues we strong and higher, frste gelling at 103%, do. consolidated plain at 100% and do. coupon gold bonds at 86%. The semi-annual report of the Michigan Central Rail- road for the half year ending November 50, 1875, is of unusual interest at this time, in view of the recent ex- pany for the six months ending December 31, 1875. The two reports cover the same period of time, except that Michigan Central includes the month of June and | not December, while the Lake Shore’s is just the reverse. It is a pleasure to read and analyse a report that does not bear the marks of ‘cooking.’ The main points compare with the previous year as follows: — 1874. 1s Gross earnings of the road and | branches tor six months to Nov. 30. 3,798,996 $5,359,309 Gross earnings for twelve months | to Nov. sisi al eh 7,618,421 6,662,598 | Operating expenses ‘tor’ tweive months t0 Nov. 80.....-....-. 5,246,494 4,953,067 Net earnings for twelve months to Nov. 80..... +++ $2,871,926 $1,718,503 —Showing a decrease in net earnings of $659,422. President Joy remarks:— it 18 not usual to make any statement at the close of the balf year after the annual report except that of the treasurer, of the financial condition of the company. The past year, bow- ever, has been 60 extraordinary in its results that the board bas deemed it fitting to place the causes before the stockholders in an additional statement * * © The business of the road, notwithstanding the large decrease in both gross and uet earnings, has been larger than ever before, the tonnage for the last six months on the main line having increased 64,154 tons. It is not, therefore, loss of business which has | affected the revenues, because a larger business bas been done. It is not the increased cost of doing it, be- cause the enlarged business has been done ato less | cost by $293,426 44. It is simply a loss in the rates, resuiting from, as we think, an uuwise se policy of com: | petition, inatead ot ment compromise | among competing lines, and this loss in rates is so much lost to the nek earnings of the road. The expense of doing the business has been incurred, § by reduced rates is loss of net earnin ‘nings of the last twelve months, therefore, should have been $2,674,326 95, at only the rates realized during the year ending with November, 1874. ‘Those who have read the last annual report are aware how much rates had been reduced at that time. They are also aware of the effects produced upon the rates of all east bound freight by the additional competition | | generated by the opening of the Baltimore and Ohio Toad, as stated in that report, competition which has resulted from the reconstruction of the Grand Trunk with a steel track, making it a first class road, has been even more fatal to the maintenance of rates, and, prac- tically. the whole value of west bound business, so far ag {reight 1 concerned, both from Boston and New York, has been destroyed. Until of late it has been done by a system of contracting by the rival roads and Itnes of cars running over them at very low rates, and now by a Ugh sapere ber tariff at about the same rates as were made by the contracts, which, on first-class business is about one-fourth of the usual and fair rate. Three-fourths and more of the value of the Westhess is thrown away, ton, alrprty sna much moray iiogy, scrited 9 tion, All path and much Ved 16 lost, sacrit a a } competition which looks more like msanity the result of any wee consideration of the circum- stances. Fripay, Jan. 1—6 P.M. There has perhaps been no week in which business | has been lighter than it was during the past week tn w | long time. The merchandise markets were rarely, it ever, In astate of more general and complete stagna- tion, ‘Change business was certainly never more in- significant, the dealings from day to day being incon- sequential in every respect. So far ag regards mercan- tile values there have been few important fluctuations, but the general tendency of prices has been toward a lower basis, though there have been eomoe exceptions where merchandise has been held with increased firmness, But there has been nowhere manifest that vim which presnges increased activity and buoyancy. the mer chants in many cases pleading the ancertaint! of the future as on excuse for curtailing end retrenchment. It is certain that there can be no ground for complaint about extravagant and reckless ventures while xcoedingly cautions policy now being pursued by the mercantile public is #0 strictly adhered to; and, if the business of the country is amall, it is done on a sefer basis than when it was larger aud the fluctuations buth of the curreney and merchandise were more radical, But notwithstanding the extreme dul- ness of the markets and the conspicuous absence of nearly ali | the elements of a busy season, the confidence of the mercan- tile vablic that much more setive movement in tr cies will ere long be witness wane, though it is Sistouls os Geberinton, cm thes tne + based, ex be spoa ‘She dearth of supplies th ices are exceedingly low, in the v7 ‘owe ipricee’ 9 revailing. been very quiet, *Soange ed, and very Hittie bas been done in an, mything.
