Wat Sraner, Turspay, Jan, 4—6 P. M. There was a shaking up of dry bones to-day to a de- gree that at one time threatened a general resurrection of business, The drowsiness of yesterday’s traffic gave way to a feeling of animation and life, Something was at work to excite the indolent market—something bo rouse into activity the Mnancial system, heretofore as {rresponsive to the treatment of monoy dottors as ts the liver of an East Indian to the persuasive influ- ence of blue mass, Our old acquaintance, Lake Shore, which in its time has purged manya friend and foe, proved itself to be the biue pill of the day, and the gen- eral market benefited by the medicine. There was decidedly more activity manifested to-day and more real strength exhibited than bas characterized the stock market for some time past. Lake Shore was, of course, the observed of all observers, and rightly so, for trans- actions were unusually large aud quite eclipsed any other of the favorites, ‘The opening price of 60% was quickly advanced to higher quotations, and better figures were slowly but surely made during the entire day, the closing ones showing fully one per cent profit to the fortunate buyers at yesterday evening's prices. There was not even acheck or a drawback to this advance—every- thing was lively and anser elevatus. Of course there were reasons for this strength, and the supporters of the stock gave them out free—gratis—for nothing. Whether the gift to those who acted upon the donation is to be a valuable one or no depends upon circumstances, Stock brokers as a rule are timorous of “points” —they are as suspicious of these free gifts as was the old Roman with his ‘“Pimeo Danaos et dona ferentes,!” and are apt to give them a cold‘shoulder. Still, it is proper as a part of to- day’s history to explain that the gift package in Lake Shore contained the information that at to-morrow’s meeting of directors a most favorable statement of | affairs was to be rendered, A dividend might be voted or it might not; at any rate, the stuff was ready to pay it with, and whether eurplus earnings were tO be scattered among stockbolders | or locked up in the company’s safe mattered Little, sinco, in either event, the market price of the stock would beenhanced. The proof of the pudding will be im the eating, and stockholders and stockjob- bers will probably be able to sit down to @ meal to- morrow which we hope will prove something better than dining with Duke Humphreys, at least. Influenced by Lake Shore the entire list was strong and inclined to advance, although closing quotations showed that little, if any, progress was made on the best rates of the day. Almost the only exception to the above was the advance in St. Paul preferred from 66% to 67, arise due partially to purchases on ac- count of the Sage of William street and partially to favorable reports in reference to legal proceedings im the Granger suits. Western Union opened at 74, rose to 74%, receded to 74M, ending atthis figure. Pacific Mail sold at 3834 a 383 0.38%, and then declined to 38, with aclose at 384 Erie was a tfifle more active than usual in consequence ef London despatches, and sold at 16% a 165; a 153%. The remainder of the market is without material change. THR SALES TO-DAY. Despatches from Grand Haven, Mich., as late as De- cember 31, 1875, report “freights at that port from Mil- waukee as still very lively. Christmas three vessela brought about 2,500 tons; Tuesday the Amazon brought over 801 tons; Wednesday the Minneapolis brought 600 tons; yesterday the Forest City arrived with 33,000 bushels of wheat, and to-day the Amazon is expected with about 800 tons of miscellaneous freight The freight facilities of the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad are taxed to their utmost capacity. The new elevator works finely.’’ This freight, if bound East, passes over the Detroit aud Milwaukee Railroad to De- | troit, and thence cast by either the Grand Trunk or Great Western of Canada. STREET RUMORS, | To-day it was asserted very positively that the Lake | Shore directors to-morrow (Wednesday) would declare | a yearly dividend of two per cent or more apon the | common stock of the company. It wag also reported that the Chicago, Milwaukee | and St Paul Company next April would pay a fourteen percent dividend in consolidated bonds to tts preferred stockholders, the same being for two years, and the advance In the price of the preferred and decline in that of the common stock lends color to the report. Js was reported that another American railroad was | in the London market for a loan of $2,500,000, and probably would be negotiated to-day. Is is & curious comment upon the freaks of specula- tion that to-day, while the Lake Shore ‘‘pool”” were add- ing to their purchases, on the assumption of a small dividend being dectared to-morrow, the “shorts’’ in Erie stock were buying that, om the supposition that the stock was to be assessed by the action of the Lon- don bondholders’ meeting. solidated Virginta Mine now produces 650 tons of ore per day, which is equal to $1,800,000 per week. The Consolidated Virginia Mine have bought the Gould & Curry property at Seven-mile Cavern, where enormous concentrating works will be erected. ‘The amount of treasure shipped irom San Francisco to al) points im 1875 was $43,027,726 VREIGHT RATES. The general freight agents of the Eastera ‘pool’ lines held a meeting at Chicago Monday, to equalize local rates, This was the only basiness transacted, but itis Deleved that the rates cast are weakening and will shortly be reduced.
