CWIANGLL AND CONTR The Stock Market Dull—The Opening of the Year a Disappointment to Leading Operators. GOLD 118 A 112 8-4. (Money on Call Loans Firm at 7 Per Cent, .Gold—Government and Railway Bonds in Fair Demand by Investors. — Wat Strxgr, Monpay, Jan. 3—6 P, M. Stock Exchange members congregated in tho hall ‘his morning apparently under the vague impression (that a change of year was a change of luck. Surmount- ing 1875 and landing in 1876 was expected to be as ‘gatistactory to the man of commissions as is the suc- ‘cessful attempt at a double fence or a rasping bullfinch ‘to a rough rider tohounds There was to be a sure ‘find to-day, no turn or check in the run, and Reynard, an old dog fox as tough as shoe leather, was to be killed in the open, The wish was father to the thought—it turned out a dull day for bunters after commissions, and the mere 4oupgon of an order was as hopeless as the scent on a frosty day to hounds. Still, “Hope” had been elected wgoddess-in-chiel, and the ‘flattering tale” she told at- tracted many believers, many believers who had made sure that the addition of a figure to old Time’s calendar was to make a sudaen and grateful addition to purse and bank account, Why the toppling over of 1875 into 1876 was, by some necromancy, to produce a sudden improvement in the condition of the stock and money market was not particularly clear, but it is uevertheless certain that operators put in an appearance this morn- ing fully convinced that the Rubicon had been passed, -and that plain sailing and a hospitable port were the promises of the future. Some little action was taken upon this idea on the opening of the market, and prices were strong accordingly, but soon after com- menced to droop from want of outside support, There was scarcely 34 per cent difference in quota- tions during the whole day. Stocks were as dull as dull conld ve, and the hopeful ones who appeared early 4m the arena, Though fanned by conquest’s crimson wing, ‘were lett at the close no better off than at their advent. The first working day of the now year wae fraught w:th disappointment, and the sudden burst into prosperity, quite expected, met asad reverse, We endeavored to show yesterday the reasons why and wherefore of the present dulness of Stock Exchange matters and ven- tured to prognosticate the future. There are difficul- ties which can be cured at once; there are ‘others which time alone can favorably affect. ‘The first referred to exists simply because an absurd commission law binds Stock Exchange members down with bands of stecl; a law antagonistic to common sense and the tenets of free trade; a rule tyrannical bocause impracticable; an oppression to those who live up to it, and a farce to those who secretly ignore it—in @ word, a measure which is at once an incubus and a fraud, and which in its influence tends not only to beggar Stock Exchange members, but to invite an @pposing power which, only threatening now, may in the future loom up as formidable an adversary to the New York Stock Exchange as did the open Board of Brokers in years gone by. Verbum sap. As condensed Latin ts full of meaning ‘we recommend it to the Board of Brokers as worthy of study, now that “memberships” are offered at $5,000 and commission ness is ‘nil.’” Western ore opened at 7434, declined to 73%, and, aiter a brief rally to 74%, ended at %4.
