NEW YORK HERALD — -—__-____—_———_. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, | The Stock Market Irregular and Fever- ish---Sales Unsuggestive. GOLD 1143-8 AND STEADY. Honey on Call 4 and 6 Per Cent—Government and Investment Securities Unchanged. Want Steuer, } Wepxrapay, Dec, 15—6 P. M. There was the usual “lay out’ to-day--the greep sloth with the painted cards, the dealiug box burnished to look like silver and a perfection of equipment that | would have sutisiied tho critical tate of a State Sena- tor. There was little more, The game was scarcely worth the candlo, so sedulously did the usual stock gamblers decline the invitation to “try their luck.”’ In fact, they have been down upon this moral idio~ syncrasy for weeks past and it requires an entertain- ment something more than the usual daily spread to coax either innocents or professionals to take # hand. There was some swapping of jackets in Lake Shore, but the exchanges that were made were so lacking in profit that a Chatham street “Old Clo’? would havo scorned the transaction, Union Pacific dropped off from 76 to 74, with appar- ently no other reason than that somo hoiders of the stock desired to realizo—-a most natural result, consid- ering that Jay Gould’s hand is temporarily off the brake and that the grade is downward gencrully. To this it may be added that Boston holders are be- toming uneasy that the declared dividend has not im- parted a more decided fillip to the stock; and in view ofthis fact there is a good deal of squirming at the “Hub,’’ with a marked inclination on the part of hold- irs to get out of their bargain and pass over their good thing to the “periphery”? of New York instead. ‘There waa a rally of 1 per cent from the lowest price, Jay Gould coming to the rescue at the critical moment, when things’ began to look blue, There was absolutely nothing worthy of comment stirring in other stocks, and the whole Bourd, like Wilkins Micawber, ts waiting for something to turn up. The outlook for an improve- ment quickly to come is poor indeed, and harassed brokers while hoping on, with plucky hearts, are learn- ing day by day the bitter truth that it is “hope de- ferred which maketh the heart sick."’ ‘The fluctuations in stocks to-day, which have been generally trifling, were as follows:—Western Union, 15%.a 16 0 15% 075%; Pacific Mail, 403; a 4054 Erie, 1634 a 1744 a 174%; Lake Shore, 6134 a 6134 & 6134; Michigan Central, 6014 a 603 a 6034; North- west, 40 a 403, 2 3934; ad, preferred, 5634 a 6634 a 5035; 3t, Paul, 36 0 36%{; do. preferred, 66 0 655; a 68 0 65% Dhio and Mississippi, 17 a 16%, and Union Pacific, 76 a 14a 74% a 7407553. ‘Tho remainder of the list showed wither no chunges or no sales. The closing caso of Quincy vs. White ct al, contains points of im- portance to all who occasionally engage in what they imagine to be “limited” stock pools, and has a direct bearing upon one or two cases of the kind now in liti- gation. ‘The suit was instituted to recover the loss on one-third of the quantity of the Reading Railroad stock which had been bought for a combination, composed of 613 és, 61s, | White, Woodward and Young. White and Woodward | each bad taken up and paid for thoir one-third, Young was unable to do so or to protevt by a deposit of addi- tional margin the remaining one-third. Thereupon Heath, the broker, sold out Young’s stock at a loss of | upward of $100,000 and brought suit against the ‘co- partnership” for the difference and interest, recovering Judgment against White, Woodward and Young col- lectively and individually. Upon appeal the court of | last resort has confirmed tho judgment, except for a sinall item: in the account of $5,000. In accordance with the above resolutions the com- mittee, consisting of Messrs, P. N. Spofford, G W. Blunt, E. P, Fabri, J. 8. Stranahan and J. H. Frothing- | ham, met yesterday to draw up a report to be sub- mitted to the Chamber of Commerce. A majority of | the committee wero present, and Mr. Spofford at jook =the chai Two pilots, Mr. Henderson and Mr, Roff, were examined relative to the danger incurred to vessels in passing up and down the Nortt River by the large tows of tanal boats which were Drought around the Battery to their present station. ‘They both testified that the rivers were sometimes that there had Mr, Arden, another pilot who came in subsequently, was also exinined, and confirmed the above statements, Mr. David Dows was present and strongly opposed, in vebaif of the merchants of the Produce Exchange, the proposed change of the present site for the boats, be- tween Coenties slip and the South ferry. He had a | lively argument on the subject with Commissioner Blunt, The substance of his remarks were that tho busmess of the city had grown ta | such magnitude that it could not be removed from its present ceatres. The water front where the | canal boats now land was formerly the property of a | Mr. Lent, who donated it to the city for its present use ou condition that if atany Ume it should not be so | employed it would revert to the owners of the property | fronting on the shp, The uccidents that had occurred | were w very small matter indeed compared to the enor- mous amount of trade that passed through the port of New York. There are less accidents here than in any other barbor in proportion to its size and amount of commerce, “Gentlemen,” continued Mr. Dows, ‘yor | caunotdo anything with the Legislature about this rowiter—at any rate, tho Chamber of Commerce cannot. Go in for a breakwater if you will, but let the canal bouts alone. It you go to Albany with that view you will find opposition, When you undertaka to remove | this business to the upper part of the city you will dud | that it won't go there.” Mr. Dows then left the room, and shortly after his , departure the committee adjourned to meet next | Saturday at two o'clock. After the meeting a Heraco reporter called upon Mr. | Dows at his office with a view to ascertain still further | his opinions on the subject. He considered the project | of Mr. Blunt as wholly impracticable. His own idea | was that all the heavy business of the city and all the banking tustitutions should be near the water, Ifthe we Atlantic and Erte basins and all money and make a law, creating a station for canal | Doats’at the foot of Gansevoort street, but even them | the business would remain where it is, as every mer. | chant would still have the right to bring his graim where he pleased.
