FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Old Story of Dulness in Stocks— “Nothing to Do.” AN UNSETTLED MONEY MARKET. Gold 114 1-44 1141-8 a 114 3-8—Rag Paper 87.42—Government Bonds Steady—Invest- ment Securities in Fair Request. Way Srrexr, } Moxpay, Dec, 18—6 P. M. It is the old story to be told again, as it has been told many times before, to-day’s tale of the street, Butler awoke and found himself famous when he pub- lished ‘‘Nathing to Wear.” Can he not repeat himself with equal show for success on “Nothing to Do,” if stock brokers give him the points? For ‘nothing to do” is the chant that rises to the vaulted ceiling of the Board room and is whispered in the deserted offices of its members. ‘Played out” 1s a phrase that we use with hesitancy, for, though tuneful, it may be objected to as vulgar, and we venture to employ it be- cause it is pointed and expressive, and conveys a meaning patent to the most ordinary comprehension. The stock business, then—and we have the authority of Stock Exchange members to back our opinion—is played out. For the present, at least, the comedy is over, the lights put out and the audience dispersed. There is no present desire to assist at the daily performances, no demand for eligible seats and no general interest taken in our Stock Exchange show. So our professionals perform to a ‘“beggarly account of empty boxes’? and a papered house. Week after week the same thing recurs, and to-day’s history only adds one more monotonvus fact to the sameness of a bygone record, ‘The story of to-day’s business 1s as dull as dull can ‘be, and, in the absence of exciting news and sensa- tional reports, the market exhibits a dreariness that is appalling. This morning, with awhirl and a whoop, stocks started off strong and active, making better prices than those recorded at the close on Saturday, and threatening an advance along the whole line, It took just eighteen minutes from the opening at ten o’clock to reverse the financial engine, Discon- corted bears gained pluck, while pugnacious bulls drew in their horns; and although the day's results were un- satisfactory to either party, both bulls and bears came out of the contest at the close of business little dam- aged either in bank account or morale. In a word, the market was like Bombastes Furioso, In the “doleful dumps.” There was nothing to lift it | out of the mire, and there was no shoulder to be put to the wheel either by Hercules or Jay Gould—bis vicegerent. So stock brokers were like Othello, with an occupa- tion gone, and seriously talked of a co-operative scheme, where commissions should be pooled and Jay Gould’s brokers should be allowed to contribute their earnings to tne general fund. The vagaries of the market, as marked by fractional fluctuations at the best, are recorded elsewhere in our financial report of the day. THE TOTAL TRANSACTIONS of the day amounted to 68,700 shares, which were distributed as follows:—New York Central and Hud- son, 220; Erie, 2,200; Lake Shore, 21,800; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 500; Northwestern, 4,240; do. preferred, 2,700; Rock Island, 800; Pacific Mail, 4,600; St. Paul, 1,200; do. preferred, 600; Ohio, 1,300; Western Union, 16,900; Union Pacific, 3,555; C., C., C. and I., 100; Pan- ama, 100. MONEY MARKET. The rates for money on call today have shown a shardening tendency, having ruied at 5 to 7 per cent, The feature of this branch of the business was the ex- Libition by money lenders of an unusual discrimination as to tho class of securities likely to bo offered by the borrowers, While money wag Joaning at at 5 per cgut to certain parties who were ‘supposed to Tepresent such stocks as Central and udson, Rash, Jstand, Western Opton, ke, anoths ‘another clas? of borrowers, representing perhaps fees favorable securities, were freely paying 7 percent for considerable sums. However, after bal- ances had been well made up, money was offered at 3 per cent, and at 2 per cent if Union Pacific was the col- lateral, by the same party who previously had been the largest borrower at the highest rate of the day. The foreign exchange market was strong during the after- ‘noon, and near the close of business rates were ad- ‘vanced to 4.8554 and 4.893, for bankers’ long and short seterling. THE GOLD MARKET. Gold oponed at 11414, fell off to 114%, and advanced Yo 11434, at which it closed. The rates paid for carry- ing were 2,2!;,3and1 per cemt. Despatches from Boston to-day announce an impor- tant failure in the clothing line—that of Freeland, Hard- ing & Co., with liabilities of $750,000; also that of C. The Union Trust Company have filed in the County Clerk’s office the complaint in a suit to foreclose somo 626 mortgage bonds of the Pennsylvania and Sodus Bay Railroad Company. ‘The officially reported earnings of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad compare as follows :— 1874. 1875. Gross earnings for November... $1,065,725 $1,219,225 It ts understood that the figures fur 1875 include the earnings of the “proprietary rouds,”” while thoso for 1874 do not, Concerning the reports about this com- pany which have been published in the Chicago papers a Chicago journal of last Friday says:—‘Mr, Keep said he had nothing to add to what he had already said. The statement given by bim to the reporters was en- tirely correct. He had not the least doubt that these reports emanated from some person or persons anxious to bear the stock of the road. That no one believed these roports was best seen by the fact that the value of the stock had not depreciated in the least; on the contrary, it had advanced. * * * . * wel we “The exhibits made of the financial condition of the road in the annual report, published’ last August, were correct, and since that time the floating debt had been largely reduced, and if busivess continued as good as at present « reduetion would be made before the end of Us tiseal year.’? It will b. vbserved that Mr. Keep, the President, does not confirm the statement which has been made from the company’s New York office—to wit, that the | d floating debt as of last May had been entirely paid off. sb oda Monpax, Dec, 13, 187% BEFORE CALI—10 A. The charter of this bank re- Stricts the trustees from loaning funds outside of the city of New York and adjacent counties, and limits its loans to fifty per cent on unemcumbered real estate, Now, Essex county is in another State, and . county lies between it and this city, During the same year Mr, Hay, while still ong of the trustees, was owner of ten unencumbered lots in the City of Brooklyn, which he conveyed to Mary K.
