NEW YORK AKRALD, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1875—QUADRUPLE SHEET. PARIS GOSSIP. The Republican Victory— MacMahon Dissatisfied. ALARM ON THE BOURSE. The Duc D’Aumale to Marry Princess Thyra. A VON BULOW SENSATION. A Sad Episode---The Death of Rossi’s Son. New Books—Latest Pashions—A. T. Stewart's Bargain—A Baltimore Pianiste, No. 61 Avenum px 1'Opena, Pants, Dec. 11, 1875. The excitement over the Senatorial elec- tions continues everywhere. Paris is never slow to catch the significance of a political movement ; and now that the Left has so handsomely beaten the Right, and in the scrutiny have shown the strength of repub- licanism, the sensation is very intense, Notwithstanding the report that the Bona- Partists had assisted the Left in obtaining the victory in the election of Senators for life, they will dispute the validity of Senatorial elections by an expiring Chamber. The majority of the Right was really dis- solved by the defection of the legitimists. MORE REPUBLICAN SENATORS, The feeling is intensified by the fact that out of eleven life Senators elected by the “Assembly to-day seven are republicans, PRESIDENT MACMAHON is highly dissatisfied with the result of the elections, The Left expect that in the spring they will obtain office, which cannot please him. The effect on MacMahon would be the same as the effect of democratic success on Grant. Henraup Burrav, ; THE BOURSE has become very greatly alarmed over the re- sult of the elections, for the success of the republicans means a disturbance of conserva- tive financial interests. There is a rumor which I have just heard that THE DUC D'AUMALE, fourth son of Louis Philippe, and whose wife, daughter of Prince Leopold of Salerno, died in 1869, is to marry agnin; and this time no less a personage than PRINCESS THYRA, laughter of the King of Denmark, and, therefore, a sister of the Princess of Wales and of the wife of the coming Dzar. The lady is twenty-two years old. The Duke is fifty-three. This yumor naturally creates a great deal of golitical as well as social comment, for in 4ase a marriage is consummated it is believed that it will augur a RUSSIAN SUPPORT OF ORLEANSISM ind an alliance in the future of the coming ozar with France against Germany, ‘ROSSI, the great Italian actor, was on his way to San Remo, on the Mediterranean, where his son had gone to seek a restoration of health, while the news that his boy was dead was on its way to Paris. Among the news which comes to the bureau to-night is a bit that will please your American pride to know; for CECILIA GAUL, the Baltimore pianiste, has been engaged to give a series of concerts at the Gewandhaus, at Leipsic. CRITICISM OF YON BULOW. Dr. Hans Von Biilow's remarks toa Henanp torrespondent about English appreciation of tuusic and the higher degree of musical talent in America have reached England, and the English musical journals which have some to hand are farious over his criticisms, His statement about his unhappy recollec- tion of what he had experienced in England ‘a regarded as outrageous, THE ENGLISH CRITICS deny Dr. Von Biilow’s statement that Amer- ‘cans have greater musical talent than the English. The affair is likely to lead not oly to a defence of himself by Dr. Von Billow, but also to invite a discussion of the nerits of thetwo countries in respect to their musical taste and ability. What Dr, Von Bilow really might have found in England was a great deal of enusical taste of a very con- servative kind, from the palace to the coal pit; for any village group will furnish o choir, But there is no intense longing for pr appreciation of the school of music to which Dr. Vop Biilow belongs. Handel and Mendelssohn rule England in music—the one ip oratorio and the other in symphony. You ‘Americans are quicker to appreciate the aewest than the English are. A NEW BOOK ON THE UNITED STATES. There is this week a book which you | will find important. It is by Pierre Jannet, and is called ‘Les Etats-Unis Contempo- rains.” Jannet is a writer who is more likely to give instruction than pleasure ; and his mind is rather dry and mathematical than critical in its habits. Another book by Jules Arene is called “La thine Familiére et Galante.” FANNY LEAR sbusy writing her second book, which ix, expected to make great sensation ben Oe Paris lives on scandal when it has not asiege or a revolution. MEXISONIES'S NEW PICTURE On Thursday M. Thiers spent # half bour at Potit’s Gallery inspecting Melssonier's large picture of an incident in the Battle of Friedland, in 1807, between Bonaparte’s forces and the Bussiana, of which I gave you a description by cablé Jast week, Ibiy very “bold, and displays the remarkable patience of that painter. It has been pur- chased by Mr. A. T. Stewart 1 PASIIONS, for dinner and the theatre, dresses are made high in the neck; but short sleeves are still Permitted, Cloaks and pardessus are made altogether after the fashion of gentlemen's garments, and are particularly noticeable for the striking peculiarity of being covered with buttons and having also a great deal of braid. 7%, WORTH, THE MAN MLLER, is making up Louis Quinze and Louis Seize winter costumes, AMERICAN SOCIETY is extremely dull in Paris, and there are but few entertainments of any kind. LEGITIMISTS AND MEMBERS OF THE LEFT CRN- TRE ELECTED TO THE sExATR. Versanams, Deo 11, 1875 The following seven legitimise have been elected to the Senate: —Messra, De la Rockette, Deputy for Loire Inferieure; Pajot, Deputy for the Nord; Thérey, for the same department; the Count de Treville, Deputy for Aude; the Count of Cornulier, De Luctaiere, Deputy for Loire Inferieure; Dumon, the Marquis de Fraachioa, Deputy for the Hautes Pyrénées. MEMBERS OF THE LEFT ORWTRA RLRCTED. There were also elected Colonel de Ohadois, of the Left Centre, Deputy for Dordogne; Humbert, of the Left, Deputy for Haute Garonne, and Kolb-Bernard, of the Right, Deputy for Nord. ‘This makes ten altogether. ‘The success of the Legitimists is owing te the sup- port of the Left. Henparn, Deo, 11, 1876, The weather in this neighborhood is still severe, Soveral Carlist soldiers have been frozen to death. The Carlist forces are estimated at 62,000 men, with 105 guns. GRANT'S MESSAGE IN CUBA. HAVANA PRESS COMMENTS ON THE AMERICAN STATE DOCUMENT. Havana, Deo. 11, 1875. The Vor de Cuba, commenting on that part of the President's Message which relates to Cuba, says;-— General Grant’s lan; seems to have Sa to wound the seems to like pl temperament of ‘he Spaniards any more than Napo- leon did. RESULT OF 4 CONFERENCE OF THE PUDDLERS AND THE IRON ASSOCIATION—A COMPROMISE EFFECTED. PrrrsporG, Pa, Dec. 11, 1875. The conference of the puddlers and representatives ofthe Iron Association ended to-night after a pro- tracted session, during which the matter in dispute was argued by all parties interested at great length. The conclusion arrived at was yes oe shape of a com- promise, the manufacturers ag to allow the puddlers $4 75 for boili until’ the the 14th of February next, while those mille whose contracts have not yet expired with the boilers agree to to ed antil the date ef expiration. The puddlors seem to be satisfied with the result, and believe that they are now down to bottom rock in the way of wages, The manufacturers saw that a long and dreadful lock out would be the result of the $4 50 proposition. and the consequence was that they went balf way toward compromise, MONMOUTH COUNTY RAILROAD. APPOINTMENT OF 4 RECEIVER BY VICE CHAN- CELIOB VAN FLEET—THE ROAD BONDED FOR SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. Trenton, N. J., Dec. 11, 1875. Im the Chancery Court here to-day Vice Chancellor Van Fleet, on application of Mr. W. H. Vredenburg, do- clared the Monmouth County Agricultural Railroad in- solvent and appointed Colonel Meriaeth Dickinson re- ceiver, This ts an important local railroad running from Freehold to Keyport and connecting with the Long Branch Railroad. Recently it got into the handa of rail- road brokers. The firm of Brown Brothers & Co., No, 69 Wall street, New York, had caused the road to be bonded for $760,000, with the purpose of connecting tt with other roads leading to Manchester and thence to Camden. In order to carry out their plans they sent General Schultze to Europe to negotiate their bonds. He did not succeed. Work on the road then ceased. The above course was then taken on behalf of the Presi- dent and Rent up stockholders, All the road ts graded from Freehold to rene and it ts anticipated that this action ef the Court will Gnally lead to more vigorous ex- ertions for the completion of the enterprise. TWO BLACKMAILERS CAUGHT. a “cuRvER FRUSTRATION OF AN ATTEMPT TO OBTAIN FORTY-TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS, Bostox, Mass., Dec. 11, 1878. Aremarkable attempt to blackmail #7. Geldowsky, one of the largest furniture dealers bere, bas culmt- pated in the exposure of the plot and the arrest of Ezra S, Goodwin, a private detective and the chief conspira- tor, Goodwin indaced a former employé of Geldow- sky's to swear that the latter hired him to set fire to his (Geldowsky’s) factory in 1871 in order to defraud in- surance companies Goodwin claimed to represent the companies, and, armed with the false alfidavit, de- manded $42, 000 of Geldowsky or exposure and arrest, ‘Tho latter secured the services of detectives, and, os- tensibly agreeing to pay & portion of the blackmail, en- trapped Goodwin in a room ata hotel, where he was ar- rested yesterday. He ts now in jail in default of $5,000 bail, William Fogg, who made the false afMdavit arrested, and is now in jail He came from order to carry out the scheme | EXCITEMENT IN MONTREAL, {THE OMISSION TO TOLL THE BELLS OF THE FRENCH CHURCHES AT THE FUNERAL OF FATHERS MURPHY AND LYNCH DISCUSSED. England and Her Purchase of the Suez Canal Shares. THK TURKISH AND PERUVIAN LOANS, ———— The Expeident's Message and Itg Influence Abroad. Lonvon, Dec. 11, 1875. Speculation Pak thd week has been ex- tremely quiet, although mors or less affected politically and financially by the Purchase on the part of the British government of the interest of the Khedive of Egypt in the Suez Canal. The sum involved is about $20,000,000 gold. The capital stock of the Saez Company amounts to 400,000 shares, Of these 177,000 shares are thus transferred to the English government. It is under- stood that THE PAYMENT is to be promptly made through the Roths- childs. The government will be called upon simply to verify the purchase, In conse quence of this transaction considerable ex- citement has existed; but Mr. Disraeli, the Prime Minister, is said to be very firm in his judgment concerning the propriety of the act, and there is little doubt that it will be sanctioned by Parliament. ‘THE BANK RETURN of the week is extremely favorable. The supply of money seeking employment is in- creasing, and if it were not for the fact that Germany is still a buyer of gold there would probably bea reduction in the price, It must be confessed, however, that the finan- cial position, regarded from all points of view, is daily growing more unsatisfactory. Concerning TRE PERUVIAN LOAN bondholders are still in the dark and the Commissioners are silent. The Lima author- ities seem to be deaf to appeals and make no explanation. Nothing is said about the pay- ment of the next coupon on the bonda, and there is an evident desire on the part of the government to question the price of the security rather than the quantity of guano to be pledged in the market. The bond- holders are kept in the dark and the Com- missioners are silent. THE MESSAGE OF PRESIDENT GRANT has been chiefly influential in determining the purposes of the government concerning the complications in Cuba, It has outwardly removed the existing suspicion that trouble was impending. It has also relieved Ameri- can bonds from a pressure and a heaviness that was felt by those who are engaged in their manipulation. It may be added, how- er, that these securities are still foverishly held, because of the suggestions of the Pres- ident concerning the school question and the opening of the new political issues. On the whole the Message has been WELL RECEIVED, and especially that portion of it which treats of the finances of the government and the possibility that at a not distant day the cur- rency of the country will be reduced toa basis that will correspond with that of other specie paying communities. THE RGYPTIAN SYNDICATE, There are rumors of an effort to form an Egyptian syndicate for the purchase of Egyp- tian railways and of the sugar estates and factories of the Khedive, but they are not yet sufficiently defined to warrant the publi- cation of the fact. If they should prove true, however, it can scarcely be questioned that the capital required and employed for the purpose would largely contribute to the development of the country. Already UNUSUAL ENTERPRISES are in contemplation. The Rothschilds are said to be making arrangements for the es- tablishment of a branch of their European banking houses in the city of Alexandria. Various industrial works are also understood to be in process of construction. THE TURKISH LOAN. Notwithstanding the publication in the Times to the contrary, the Turkish bonds have advanced on the official announcement that the January coupon would be provided for. A meeting of the Turkish bondholders was held on Tuesday and presided over by one of the Vice Governors of the Bank of England, wherein » special committee was appointed to carry out negotiations with the Turkish gov. ernment. It is believed by those who are familiar with the Eastern situation that the Sultan has now an opportunity of reforming his finances, and that if he will employ the ordinary means which are understood by every public political economist he may escape the evils that now threaten his gov- ernment, There are few other financial European features that have not been already recorded in the Henan. WASHINGTON. President Grant’s Religio- Political Status. EFFECT OF THE EXPOSURE The Methodist Bishops and Their Third Ba i “Nomination, fROM OUR REGULAR CORRESPONDENT. Sasumarox, Dee. 11, 1875, THE PRESIDENT’S ANTI-CATHOLIO CONNECTION EMBARRASSING TO THE ADMINISTRATION RE- PUBLICANS—THE THIRD TERM PROSPECTS— ZCCLESIASTIO INFLUENCE IN THE WHITE HOUSE. The Foster letter to ex-Speaker Blatne is much talked of here, Foster was in town on Saturday, but left om an early train, It ts supposed that he came down to sce Mr. Blaino. The revelation made tm the letter that the President belongs to & secret political anti-Catholic Order is embarrassing to the administration republicans and seems to bo en- joyed by those republicans who are not Grant men, The impression here is that it injures, tf it does not kill, the third term project. ‘The action of the Methodist preachers and of Bishops Haven and Simpson excites a great deal of unfavorable comment, It is notorious here that some Methodist preachers and bishops have long had great influence at the White House, which they have not always used for the pablie good alone. Bishop Haven has been for two years an outspoken third termer. Close observers here remark that if the President is not desirous of a third term {tis a singular fact that those who surround him are almost all third termers, It is now noticed that the Southern republican members of Congress also declare for a third term. Some of them whose opinions were known to be hostile before they came here, give as an excuse now for their change that they foar they cannot got their “patronage” unless they submit. ‘THE DEMOCRATIO LEADERS STEALING THE RE- PUBLICAN THUNDER—THE FREE SCHOOL CRY AND THE NON-SECTARIAN AMENDMENT TO' BE TAKEN UP. It looks now as if there would be a race between the ‘two political parties in Congress to see which shall be first in getting before the people with an amendment to the constitution prohibiting the diversion of pubic moneys to the support of sectarian schools. One of ‘the matters which will be considered at the democratic eaueus on Monday will most likely be the policy the majority in the House should pursue with referonce to this as well as to other questions inviting their action ‘this session, If the caucus is controlied by the sentiment prevailing outside there can be little doubt of the result of such deliberation. An advocacy of the free school principle cannot injure the democratic party. An tn- dorsement of {t would spike the big gun of Grant and Biaine in their rivairy to secure the favors of the re- publican party and to make capital for their party Against its opponents. The democratic defeats in Obie and Pennsylvania in November were largely in consequence of the skilful use of the public school question by the republicans The democrats know ‘this, and they are going to spike the republican guns ailaround, The Grst gun was spiked vy the Demo- ‘eratic Association of the District of Columbia at their monthly meeting last evening, when the following reso- ‘ations, embracing among them the proposed amend.
