Wat Srexer, } Wroxnspar, Dec 8—6 P. M. | There bas veen a slaughter of the innocents to-day, | with Jay Gould as the modern Herod and Lake Shore he scene of the massacre, There was nothing tn early Dusiness hours to foreshadow the impending casualty, | and playful “shorts” gambolled or gambled (spell it as | you will) in frolicsome but false security. It, however, became apparent that Herod—only yesterday threat. ened with translation to another sphere, whero there is | aught to corrupt and no railways to break through | and steal—had thought {t a superior dodge to appear as @ convalescent on ’Change, and renew his vitality by a bountiful meal on the uususpicious bears. Very curiously, people who have for years past, with intense solicitude, looked after Commodore Vanderbilt’s | health as a matter that, becoming impaired, would serl- | ously affect the stock market, have been quite blind to | { the fact that Jay Gould is also liable to the visit of the | grimenemy, But there ts this to be said in explana- | tiom of the matter. People as arule believe in the veteran Railroad King; they incline to think him | “‘equare,’’ and discredit any protended mortuary dodge ‘upon his part for the purpose of affecting prices. Buy ‘there is another feeling with regardto Gould, They | believe hima sham (and Brie stockholders call him | womething worse), and take it altogether they have no faith in his fits and his pills and potions as they begin ‘to have no faith in his puts and calls, AS regards mag- nitude of interest, undoubtedly Commodore Vanderbilt | surpasses Gould and, ceteris paribus, tho death of the | former should affect financial circles more seriously than that of the latter, But things are not equal. The ‘wealth of the former is vested in sound, dividend earning securities; that of the latter in marginal ad ‘vances upon uncertain fancies. So when yesterday the Great Mogul was reported im | extremis, incredulous brokers stuck their tongues in + their cheeks and had warning recollections of Red Rid- 4ng Hood and the sick wolf imgrandmamma’s nightcap. Union Pacific, in whieh nobody deals except Gould and his tall, fell off of course, as was intended it should do, and the rest of the market sympathized slightly, as it ‘was meant it should do, also, | do., coupon (do), 14% a 115, do. do., 1865, registered, | the company, in refutation of rumors to the contrary, | frst mortgage at 102%. | w043¢; Contra! Thia in preparation for to-day’s work, when Herod ‘would be on his legs again, ready to carry fire and sword among the innocents of the Stock Exchange, As no- ticed above, Lake Shore was the field of blood, and here | perished the unfortunate ones who had traded upon a - bellef in Gould’s mortal illness. Opening at 6924, the price was gradually advanced under the continuous Duying of the Gould faction until the entire interest of | the markot was concentrated in this one stock, the quo- | tation at the close marking 6134, nearly the highest | figure of the day. Lookers-on competent to jndge estimate the amount purchased by Gould’s brokers to be in the neighborhood | of 60,000 shares, which, in view of the moderate effect | produced upon the price, would seem to show an inor- dinate quantity of bread for so small an amount of sack, Northwest advanced from 54% to 66%. The com. | ‘mon stock remained dull and neglected nearly all day at from 835 to 39%, but later, on the buying in of the “short” stock of a failed firm, the price advanced to 86% a 39%. The St. Paul stocks sympathized with the | market to a limited extent, the common selling from | i 854 to 864, and the preferred from 66 to 66%. Eric | was fairly active between 15% a 16% 016%, Michigan | Central sold from-60% to 61% a 615. Ohio and Missis- | sippi rose from 173, to 17% on limited transactions, Rock Island was neglected and weak at 1047% a 104%, ‘while the other investment sharos were dull and steady. Wabash declined to 43 on sales “under the rule.” Union Pacific only reflected stagnation, with its small gales at 78 a 774 a 78. Pacific Mail did better in amount of business, yet was not strong at 403; a 4014 ali. | ‘Western Union advanced from 7634 to 77 on the declar- ation of the quartorly dividend of 2 per cent.
