FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks a Trifle Stronger and Slightly Feverish. GOLD 114 1-4 A 114 1-2 A 114 3-8. ‘Money on Call Easy-at 3 1-2 and 4 Per Cent— Government and Railway Se- curities Steady, Wat Street, } Moypar, Dec, 6—6 P. M. Few stock brokers have been fortunate enough these Past two years to find their nigntly couch a bed of fosea, Most of them have had to put up with a flock Mattress or something worse, and the annoyance of a ‘crumpled leaf has been a dream of tuconceivable Auxury, Up to mid-day a stranger would have imagined, from the intensity of dulness that prevailed, that members ‘had byp just risen from some couch of poppies, had mrubbed in the waters of Lethe aud breakfasted upon a Dountiful repast of lotos leaves, The whole market, in @ word, was narcotic and somniferous. But shortly afer, the change which the poet sings of came over the spirit of this dreamy state of things and matters Degan to wake up, The first stock to throw open the shutters to the light of coming activity was our old favorite Lake Shore, The chief brave attached to the lodge of the “big Injun,” Jay Gould, 4n all the pride of paint and feathers showed upon the ‘warpath personally, and all the little ‘Injuns” ex- ¢laimed in their native tongue, ‘‘Lo! now look out for scalps.” Taking these trophies at the price of 59, it ‘was not long before the other big Injuns scented the fray from afar, and they soon joined in the scrim- mage. Mr. Merryman shed his motley and donned the garb of the noble savage, and the young operator, divested of his hirsute attire and “‘accoutred as he was,” plunged {nto the mélée, thirsting for pride of place and profits, the Teutonic element forgot its proverb- fal stolidity and took anand in the struggle, and so can it be wondered at that there was a lively advance in the fancy, and the price rose from 59 to 60% ? reaching which figure the gong sounded a cessation of basiness for the day. It was a clear case of Greek joining Greek, or rather @ pull together of all the Indian chiefs, and the results were undoubtedly satisfactory. The Intent of the movement, however, is not so clear, and there is much comment as to the animus which actuated it, Whether {t be m concerted movement of the great Moguls of the Street, based upon an apparent low price of the stock, an expected favorable report and a promised dividend, or whether it be simply a twirl upward for the purpose of strengthening the general market, and thus organ- izing an eligible basis for sales, are queries to which a day or two's business will probably afford an answer, Ove thing is certain, that the rise !n Lake Shore visibly stimulated the rest of the market, and stocks generally closed with a feeling of buoyancy and strength that has been conspicuous for its absence for many a day past Daring the dull hours of the morning the discussion of Mr. Gould’s course in refusing to honor a call upon him to deliver a certain amount of Union Pacific stock wasamatter of much comment in stock circles. Aa nearly as we can gather, the story seems to be as fol- Jows:—When Union Pacific was selling at 65, Mr, Gould banded to an eminent ex-judge, who was at tho same ‘ime his own legal adviser, « privilege to call during a tertain period and at the figure of 67, some 2,500 shares of the above stock, There wis no money payment | made by the “legal adviser” for this call, but he was to fender an equivalent in the shape of informa Mon as to the decision to be rendered by the Supreme Court at Washington. For some reason tha tall passed from the hands of the first holder into those of a third party, and on Saturday the demand was made apon Mr. Gould for the stock and delivery refused. | Che amount of money in dispute, at Saturday's price, | probably amounts to some $25,000, Mr. Gould alieges, in explanation, that no information was given as | promised and that the matter being a private one be- tween himself and his lawyer, the documentary call improperly passed out of the possession of Its original owner, ‘The quarrel {s a pretty one as it stands, but it may be Productive of one good result, viz. :—the defining of the exact status of contracts known as ‘‘puts and calla” Union Pacific was at first weak at 77% a ‘%634, and then steady at 77 a 77% antil noar the close, when 783g was bid, with no sales, Northwestern was steady at 39 a 38 preferred, after remaining quiet at 5454 a 54%, sud- denly at the close spurted to 5544. St. Paul soldat 35% a 86 a 85% a 36%, and the preferred at66.a 66%. Michi- gan Central fluctuated between 60% and 6134, showing considerable firmness on a small amount of trading. Pacific Mail, after opening at 40‘ and selling at 40, was manipniated at about 405s, until near the close it be- came valuable at 41 a 41%. We understand that a meeting of its board of directors was called for to-day at Mr. Gould’s house. The remainder of the list pre- sented no material changes THE SALES TO-DAY. MEMORANDA. The New York, New Haven and Hartford road adver- tises its half-yearly dividend of $6 per share, payable January 3. A renewal of the railroad war of last winter is fore shadowed by the following despatch ;:— Batrrwore, Md., Dec. 6, 1875. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company announce to-day that they will allow drawback of three cents ee 100 pounds on all grain brought to this city from ‘esteru points which passes through their elevators to foreign ports. As the regular rates to Baltimore are five cents lower than to New York this drawback makes a discrtmina- tion equal to 4 8-10 cents per bushel on wheat and 43¢ cents per bushel on corn against this city as a port of export. In this connection it may be remembered that the market for grain in Chicago 1s steadily declin- ng, wheat to-day having sold at 96%c, and corn at 45%c., which is @ decline for the past week ot eight cents and six cents respectively. The earnings of the St Louia, Kansas City and Northern Railway are reported as follows:— November, 1875 November, 1874. Decrease, November, 1875... January 1 to November 30, 1875. HOW NEW YORK SUFFERS AND BOSTON. PROS~ PERS THROUGH A RAILROAD COMBINATION,’ Considerable dissatisfactian has been aroused in. mercantile etrcles in this. city by the course-adopted by the freight lines running from New. York. to the Wost. For some years past that course has been re- garded as antagonistic to the general commercial inte- rests of the city and injurious in an especial manner to many of the leading branches of trade which are centred: here, to the great advantage of competing cities, Since the 15th of November the ovil has been largely increased, and has been felt to such an extent by many of the leading New York hous mined to take prompt and decisive action to procure a aremedy. Since the completion of the Hoosac Tunnel it has been found that goods can be sent to the West from New York through Bostoa mach cheaper than directly by the lines running out of New York, to.a combination entered into by the latter. timore to send goods by propeller to Boston and thence West than to send them directly West from Baltimore. | ‘This apparent anomaly is caused by the excessive com- bination rates charged by the lines running from New York, which have pet % To Chicago rt To St, Lou! The reason given for the cheapness of the Boston rates is the fact that the Boston Grand Trunk line stubbornly refuses to combine, and thus keeps the competition ‘very close. B & weak condition ha’ means, at the expense of New York, and if the present combination continues much longer the effect on the business of this city will be very serious, ‘Tho large houses which have large business with the ‘West will not suffer alone, but the whole community will lose by the transfer of @ large and profitable trade vo other points, A number of leading New York merchants, pressed with the serious nature of the inte Stake and the necessity for prompt and vigoro! have determined to call a meeting of business men at the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday next, 8th inst., at two P.
