NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1875.—rkKIPLE SHEET. THE SPEAKERSHIP. Mr. Kerr is practically out of the race for the Speak- ership.—Troy Whig (rep.) Our whole hoart and we believe that of the Virginia people is for Samuel J, Randall.—Fredericksburg (Va.) Star (dem.) It is understood that the Pennsylvania delegation will vote solidly for Mr. Randall,—Philadelphia In- quirer (rep.) ‘The West and the South can elect the man of their choice, who should be one devoted to their interests.— Plattsburg (Mo.) Lever (dem.) The member who votes for Kerr will be unable to ex- plain his position satisfactorily to his constituents, — Plattsburg (Mo.) Lever (dem.) Inthe contest for the Speakership Mr. Randall’s Prospects have improved materially within » few days.—New London Telegram (rep.) It is refreshing to witness a canvass for the Speak- ership conducted upon the high ground of principle, without log-roliing or combination of personal in- terests or private schemes,—Albany Argus (dem.) The Albany Argus, alter the above, quotes from the Washington corresponuence of the New York Times:—It is quite safe to predict that Mr. Kerr will not be the Speaker of the House.” Mr. Randall is our own choice for the Speakersbip. Let the South stand by him as he has stood by her and her representatives in the House will be united for him.—Richmond Whig (dem.) The real struggle will be between the friendsof Sam- wel J. Randall, of Pennsylvania, and M. C. Kerr, of In- diana, with the chances largely in favor of Mr, Ran- dali.—Philadelphia Inquirer (rep. ) Mr. Kerr insists on the right of public men to change their opinions with a fervor indicating a belief on his part that a fresh assortment of convictions is rather a handy thing to have in the house for an emergency.— Chicago Times (ind. rep.) A vote for Kerr for Speaker Is a vote for worse stag- nation of business and the final bankruptcy of the peo- ple oi the West. It becomes the duty of the people to note how their Congressmen vote on this issue.— Plattsburg (Mo.) Lever (dem.) The people of the country do not believe that Mr, Randall has made any pledges, though 1t is easy for them to conceive that pledges of support have been honorably made to that distinguished gentleman.— Wilmington (N. C.) Star (dem.) It looks to us as if Randall, of Pennsylvania, comes mearer the model than any other man whose candidacy \s probable or practicable. He has the ability and conti- fence of the party; he would act impartiaily, and that Js all we demand.—Plattsburg (Mo.) Lever (dem.) Mr. Randall is a thorough-going democrat, but he is &s honorable an enemy as the republicans ever had in the House. It would be unjust to call him a partisan, for he is not one in the new meaning of the word, be- ing more for country than party.—Philadelphia In quirer (rep.) The story that Governor Hendricks is assisting Mr. Kerr into the Speaker’s chair is decidedly diaphanous. It is well enough that such an impression as that should get abroad, but Governor Hendricks knows too well the effect of putting too much Indiana paper on the market,—Cincinnati Enquirer (dem.) Mr. Randall has always voted against any further issue of paper currency and against the granting of Bubsidies. He was one of the few Pennsylvania mem- bers of the last House who voted against the bill to puarantee the bonds of the Texas Pacitic Railroad Com- pany.—Washington Correspondent Philadelphia Ledger. Mr. Kerr says he may have been an inflationist, but he has changed his views, as is his right. Yes, and the difficulty is that he may exercise his right to change them again and get back to his original fundamental position, Our faith in Mr. Kerr’s consistency of con- vietion has received a rude shock within the last two ‘weeks.—Cincinnati Times (rep.) : It is reported that Governor Hendricks has formed Qn alliance with Mr. Kerr to hoist him into tho Speaker's chair. Indiana is getting very ambitious. She wants both Presidential candidates und the Speaker, It surely cannot be that Governor Hendricks in this way seeks to have it known he has given up all hope of the Presidential nomination. —Cincinnati Times (rep.) RANDALL'S ELECTION DEPENDS ON PENNSYL~ ‘VANIA. [From Forney’s Sunday Chronicle.} : Kerr is being pressed with great vigor, but he is un- fortunate in having won the partial favor of the New York press, and by that the money interest of the East. This coming Congress is too fresh ‘from the people to be influenced im any way by the corrupt money interests of the East, and, as its strength is Jargely from the South and Southwest, it will prove it- self too practical for the fine spun theories of Eastern monopolists, and this fact will be all against Mr. Kerr. All this is favorable to the chances of Randall, and in conversation with members who arc not committed to either candidate we find our impression pretty gener- ally sustained. Unless new and at present unforeseen complications arise the situation clearly indicates the nomination of Randall, and that, too, on the second or third ballot. Ifhe can maintain a vote of sixteen or seventeen from. his own State he will go into caucus ‘with about sixty-five votes, and on the second or third Dallot make up the additional number of twenty to in- sure his nomination, Besides, there are interests at work for Randall that will only develop a day or two before the caucus meets, and these influences, we think, will decide the contest, REPUBLICANS FOR THEMSELVES. {From the Boston Advertiser. ] From a party point of view the union of a sufficient number of democrats with the republicans to elect an independent candidate for Speaker would mean nothing Jess than the break up of the democratic party. He must be a very sanguine republican who expects help efthatsort. It would bean act of unspeakable folly for republicans to vote for Mr. Kerr im pursuance of such a plan, unless they could be certain of co-opera- tion sufficient to give them at least a fair chance of success, If the idea 1s thought worth acting upon there might be no harm in “sounding” democrats deemed most likely to enter into the plan. We feel sure, how- ever, that no encouragement would be given, Democrats are not made of the right stuff to join in schemes of such anature, It will be seen that this is the purely practical view of the case, Unless the republicans can be sure that they will gain something—either a posi- tive victory or a weakening of their opponents by vot- Ing for a democrat—they certainly ought to vote for Mr. Blaine. And we have yet te learm that there is pme democrat in the new Houso who will say that if Mr. Randal! is nominated for Speaker he will voto againsthim. Moreover, we doubt if there is such a member, Did not Mr. Thurman vote for Governor Allen? THIRD TERM NOTES. The Sandy Hill Aerald is against the third term. That settles it.—Zroy Budget (rep.) The third term project is uncommonly lively just mow.—Jacksonville (Fla.) Union (dem.) We believe that Grant can compel his party to ac- cept bim.—Shreveport (La.) Times (dem.) ‘4Grant bas done well,” says tho Sandy Hill Herald, ‘Why not let “well enough” alone, then.—Zroy Budget rep.) The people have the unquestioned constitutional right to re-elect him if they choose so to do.—Troy Budget (rep.) If it be clearly demonstrated that he ts the only re- publican who can be elected to the Presidency, he's our man for the place.--Troy Budget (rep. ) Grant is the man, He has been dictated by neces- sity, and he is the strongest republican who can be selected for that position, The democracy will have to Oght Ulysses 8. Grant for a third term.—Cincinnati Enquirer (dem.) ‘The third term discussion seems to us about as use- ful as @ last year’s fashion plate, As for attempting to carry Pennsylvania for it, we might about as well whistle jigs toa milestone and expect it to dance,— Philadelphia North American (rep ) The men who are so dreadfully frightened on this Subject are only taking this method to stab in the dark Graut and bis administration, They have adopted the Parthian mode of warfare, ‘They fire back poisoned ar, fows while in cowardly fight. —Troy Budget (rep.) The Presidential election 1s rapidly approaching, The | fonventions of the respective parties will be held in tive or six months, Whore is the candidate who is to beat General Grant for the third term? Where is he spoken ot? Who is hey He bas not made his appearance.— Cincinnati Enquirer (dem.) The Hvening Journal talks of the nomination of Gen- eral Grant fora third term as an impossibility, The Journat will have General Grant’s name at the head of its columns within six months as a candidate for Presi- dent in 1876, and will contend he is the only man that can save the nation,—Chicago Industrial Aye (granger). ‘The whole matter may be summed up thus:—Grant is after the nomination; the republican party may ac- cede it to him, and in such case the great body of inde- pendent citizens who are against Cwesarism as un ab- stract prinorple, however much they may admire Gen- eral Grant as an individual, will repudiate him at the polls.—Picche (Wev.)
