Waw greerr, } Tursvay, Nov. 23—6 P.M. f ‘Transactions to-day were “small by degrees and eautifully less” as the dé older, Even the d pat-dog business was wretchedly weak to-day, and the | hungry canines failed to worry euch other from sheer hnanition. There was an entire absence of commission | business, and the operators for fractions exhibited a weakness of the knees which betokens a long absti pence from fattening profit. Kvery broker is porsessed ef tho idea that, sooner or later, he will strike a bonanza; but it 15 the disagreeable feature of these donanzas that they often strike back, aud the operator Quite as often gets the worse of the encounter, There are | many strikes for bonanzas in th arket at present, but ‘o tho prevailing dulness their blows but beat the air at {he expense of both hope and profit, The dull day has | eon turned to gome little use, however, in another Jirection, inasmuch as our remarks in the Hymazp this morning in regard to the commission rule have been ‘the engrossing topic of the Bourd conversation, with the result that proper steps are being taken to procure the repeal of the obnoxious law. A few days will probably develop the fact that strong opposition to it exists, and that a few rich houses will no longer be permitted to carry in their breeches pockets the live- | ‘fihood and prosperity of the majority of Board mem- «bors, The principal feature of the day has been the Wecline in Hannibal and St. Joseph securities. SHOVE & CU usiness Agents, 1,298 Broadway ——— THE CLEWS CASE. Yesterday was the day set down for the hearing of a motion to expunge the claim of Benjamin H. Cheever against Henry Clews & Co. Mr, Abbott appeared be- fore Register Ketchum as counsel for Mr. Tappan, trus- teo of the estate, and Mr. Bartlett appeared as counsel for Mr. Cheever, who was also there in person. The motion was not heard, ag Mr, Cheever immediately signed a withdrawal of his claim. The following letter was read tn the course of the proceedings :— Envoar Keroaum, Esq., Register tn Bankruptcy:- Dgak Sin—tI proved my claim in bankruptcy against ao, Clews & Co. some time since, for two reasons, ‘st—I, at that time, had reason to believe that the trustees in bankruptcy were likely to receive assets from the estate of the bankrupts to a cousiderable greens and that creditors might reasonably expect ividends on their claims. ‘Second—I felt it my duty to appear in the bankruptcy proceedings as a creditor and elfen any application Mr. Clews might make for a discharge from Tis debts. 1 now find an entire change in the situation, Regard- ing assets, a careful examination satisfies me that the creditors of Henry Clews & Co, have little to hope for. ‘As to opposing Mr. Clews’ discharge, it is now certain that a number of creditors, representing large claims ‘and appearing by a distinguished law firm 1p this city, will vigorously contest tne issues thereof. The points Thad contemplated embodying in my own specifications in opposition to the discharge will be ased in the inter- est of the creditors referred to. Therefore, while I am satisfied there would be no diff- cnity in maintaining my position as a creditor of Heury Clews & Co., 1am not disposed to longer continue a Jegal contest that at best can only result in a barren victory. I therefore withdraw my proof of debt. Yours, respecttuly <RENTAMIN H. CHEEVER. Naw $300. CAN Xclusive agency in New York of fast-eolling profits large, Call at 239 Market strect, pn TROUBLES.
