10 ST = NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1875—TRIPLE SHEET. —_—_—— Brothers; Mr. Adam W. Spies, Henry E. Pellens, THE BILLIARD TOURNAMENT. | George W. Abbe, Erastus C. Benedict and other gentle: SEVENTH AND LAST DAY OF THE BILLIARD CONTEST-—JOR DION WINS FIRST PRIZE AND CYEILLE SECOND—THE AMOUNT OF THE THIRD AND FOURTH PRIZES DIVIDED BE- TWEEN GARNIER, SEXTON AND SLOSSON—THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMZ TO TAKE PLACE To- GHT. Fesuertay was the last day of the billiard tournament eo far as the regular games were concerned. There was quite a good attendance in the afternoon and a very large crowd in the evening, 108 DION DEPEATS SEXTON, | The afternoon game was between Joseph Dion and Bexton. The latter won the lead, bat failed to count ‘on his first attempt. Up to the fifth inning Dion made but 18 points, while Sexton made only 14 Sexton secured but 5 in his fth inning after doing bis level best to corral the balls into the left hand corner at the foot cushion without success. Dion did splendidiy, ‘on the other hand, securing 28 by delicate play, failing to count finally by a shot that required a follow and two | cushions from the left to the right hand cushion. The ivories were scattered when Sexton began his sixth inning, yet before he completed it he obtained 31 of a | because of Mr, Hartley’s course, and yesterday, in a | men (ook part’ in the debate, which was long and stormy. Mr, Minturn stated, after the meeting, that there should be immediate reform in the association, or, if not, the public would refuse to aid the poor through its agency any longer, owing to a growing mistrust, and that, as it was, the receipts bad fallen to a very small igure’ this year. On leaving the meeting | Mr. Minturn was asked by & HeRan reporter if it | were true that the sum of $20,000 had been misappro- | printed by Mr. Robert M. Hartley, the secretary and | agent of-the association. He answered that it was not | true, Mr. Hartley, who is an aged and venerabie | looking gentleman, was next visited in the office after the meeting was closed, when he was asked the same question, and he stated in a most excited manner that it was “a villanous ie and had been gotten up to de- stroy a noble work which the speaker had been con- nected with for thirty years, and that Mr. R. B. Min- assisted by Samuel 8. Sinith, John Pullman and Michael Haun. Stnith created trouble because his grocer did not get custom from the association, and Pullman be- cause be wished to subserye base political ends, and that there was no trouble only in the Sevent | Twenty-tirst ward committees.” Mr. Hartley added that not a dollar of the money of the aseociation— | which he had founded—had ever been misappropriated, | It is stated that Mr. James Brown, of the firm of Brown | | Brothers, resigned, owing to dissatisfaction with the management of Mr, Hartley, and that other members have also left, who are’ well known in society and mercantile life, for tho same cause. Colonel Frederick A. Conkling, who was Chairman of the Fifteenth Ward Committee, resigned last spring count.’ ‘In this inning Joe went him better by 1 point, | statement toa Hxkatp reporter, declared that he had making 82. Between the seventh and sixteenth in mings the play was tame on both sides, Then Dion made a run of 48 points. After this the playing was | marked by but few skilful displays until the | twentieth imning was reached. Then Dion | got the balls in ihe lower night hand corner of the table, and itat once became evident that he was bent ona Jong run, as after making 20 he forced them close to- gether along the right band cushion, carroming on | them at the rate of twelve carroms to the minute, as he | worked them up toward the head of the table. By | the time he had got them just half the Jength of the table he had made 75, When within ten inches of the outset line cushion he had made 06, when he was compelled to play with force to get them into position, the white object ball having rolled a little to the right on a straight line from the red. He played across the table from the red to the white, sending the latter across the table with such force that the recoi! from the cushion brought it back into the upper right band corner, where the red ball had preceded it, He by this shot got them bunched once more, and before they were again separated he had made 120, within 2 of | game. He made 1 more in bis effort to corral them ito the corner and failed in around the table shot | to make the point that would have carried him out, his total run being 122 The game at this stage stood— | Dion, 299; Sexton, 83, In the next inning the latter | made 30, then missed, and Dion counted the necessary 1. The game occupied one hour and seventeen min- | utes. Dion’s average was 142-7 and Sexton's 68-21. | The following is the score:— | Joe Dion—4, 1, 0, 18, 28, 1, 82, 7, 1, 0, 10, 0, 0, 10, | 2, 48, 9, 3, 3, 122, 1300. Dion, the two play ers who during the tournament made the highest aver- age on record—30, It was well understood that n great deal depended upon this game, inasmuch as if Garnier sneceeded in defeating Cyrille it would make a tie be tween the latter apd Joe Dion, who would necessarily have to play a game to determine which should have the first prize; not only this, but that Cyrille’s defeat would make Garnier, Sexton and Blosson even, and consequently they would have to play off for the third and fourth prizes. Cyrille’s victory, it was known, too, would make him the win- mer of the first prize, and his brother of the second prize, while his defeat of Garnier would bar the latter from all prizes, The game up to the eleventh inning was miserably played. In the twenty-sixth inning Gar- mier ran 66, which completed the game, the score stand- ing 300 to 89. The game lasted one hour and eighteen minutes. Garnier’s average was 11 7-13, and Dion’s 3 ‘and a fraction, ‘The following is THE SCORE, Garnier—17, 3, 1, 4, 7, 1, 0, 1, 2, 0, 2, 13, 5, 25, 3, 1, 23, 38, 18,’ 34, 0, 0, 0, 22, 66—300, ©. The result of this game was to tie Cyrille and Joe Dion for the tirst and second prizes, and Garnier, Sex- ton and Slosson for the third and fourth. The latter three decided, after the game, to divide the third and fourth prizes between them—$1,000. SUMMARY. Hart- ley acting as secretary, ‘This association is the oldest of its kind In this city, having been incorporated in 1648, and always numbering eince that time in its ranks our very best citizens, Private, and there was no exception made to the rule Jast evening, Ithad leaked out, however, that serious trouble had ocourred in the association. One of its Ofiicials was rumored to have kept his books £0 foosely that thore was a reported deficiency of about | $18,000 in whe year 1874, the difference being Betwen $04,431, whieh ie the amount said to have been expeniied from October 1, 1873, to October 1,1874, and the amount really disbursed in charities, which is said to be legs than $75,000. Also it was allege that it was owing to the official in question that the association rolused last year to co-operate with the Bureau of Charities and Ghat in the months of December, 1873, and Jan 1674, this official, who has been con- nected with jociation since’ its Incorpo 1848, at « salary 500 per year, bad caused to be printed in the report that the expenditures for | those moutlys was $96,074 86, when the amount really expended was 32 2h, Over this and ters which are troubling the wocsety very rig od quite a violent debate last | evening, in which Mr, ¢ B, Minturn took a promi. | nent part, warmly opposing the action of Mr, | Robert M. Hartley, the secretary and agent of tho as- | roclution, Who offered a resolution a# a member of the | Board of Managers to inci the salary of a clerk | Juseon from $1,200 to $1,500 a year, which was | uly Would, Mane Stowase Lown, of Beaws | The meetings are held in | | also steamer Ethiopia (Hr), hence for Gla jon in | 2 | no confidence in the course pursued by Mr. Hartle; as the latter was totally irresponsible to the associ tion, and he believed that there was more rascality and dishonesty in the charitable institutions of this city than was ever dreamed of, He considered that a strict investigation should be made. For himseif he did not wish to belong to the association any longer, although it had done noble work, for he found that Mr. Hartley considered that the entire control of its funds and management belonged to Limand that he did not like to have any questions asked. ‘The association 1s at present in a state of alarm as to | what developments may transpire, and there is promise of immediate investigation, Mr. Hartley is over sixty years of age, and, in addition to being Secretary and ‘Agent of the Association for the Improvement of the | Condition of the Poor, 1s also Corresponding Secretary of tho Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled, and is connected in an official capacity with the Presbyterian Hospital, both positions having salaries uttached to them. Mr. Hartley bas a handsome carriage and a pair of horses, in which he is driven to the Bible House daily. There is a collector for every ward in the city attached to the association, each of whom receives ten per cent prolit on all collections made for the benefit of the poor, Some ladies pay as high as $1,000 a year by checks to the association, It 18 said, so great has been the confidence in its mauage- ment, and one lady in Fifth avenue who was accus- tomed to giving $2,000a year to the fund, and whose | uncle has lately resigned trom the cbaitmanship ol award commitiee, has declined b scribe any more money. The association has been con- stantly in receipt of legacies for the last thirty y the laiest one amounting to $50,000, being the interest | in property on Fourth avenue, just above the Claren- don House.
