It was from the ten minutes to ten A. M, train from Broadway station, while coming over Long Bridge, that Dinsmore aw it, off to the right from the old boat landing, about midway of the bridge; but I don’t want you to use this information until you see Dmsmore, My education has inchned me to disbelieve; but since I have seen and heard recent reports and descriptions of these subma- rine monsters being in other waters I have made up my mind that I have seen, right here in our own bay, either a sea serpent or a “what is if’? I have al ‘ways, heretofore, refrained from speaking about this thing because of the incredulous belief of the public in - the existence of such animals and through & lear that the boys might pick it 4 and call it one of Wood’s ish stories, you un band It Was about twelve months ago this summer, quite early in the morning—between five und six o’clock—that { frat saw this remarkable snake. It was about one-third. of a mile north ‘from the centre of Long Bridge, and appeared to be sporting in the water, which it agitated violently and lashed into a foam. [ts numerous buge coils, us seen above the water, might have been taken for a scrambling group of ’seuls of the “General Grany’ or “Ben Butler” order, of Clif House notoriety, and that’s what I thought at the time and why [said not a word. But after a later and more dis- tinct observation, and in view of what I have since beard, 1am satisied that my first spectacle was of a unity in ono snakeship of monstrous dimensions My cond and final view was last month, also quite early in the morning, while | was coming out to Long Wharf on the earliest morning train, 1t was in about the same line of observation as my tirst view, but not more than hal: sofur away, I bad a good and satisfactory view, when the monster dived under water and was lost from sight. lt stood as erect from the water as one of the _— im the slips, and in the uniformity of its diameter ' would judge its measure to be from fourteen to six- tecn inches, lis HEIGHT ABOVE THN SURVACE of the water was ten to iliteen feet, ‘ihe head resem- bled that of a lizard or bulltrog and was dazzling blac! while the throat was pure white, From the bead, just above a hizard-shaped mouth, protruded an inch or more a pair of deep black eyes half us large as ordinary Baucers. Thgbody, or so much as I saw, was striped in harmoniogs shades of black and brown on the back and sides, Ye stripes running lengthwise, while the belly was ajfost white. Running down the centre of the back wds plain to be seen a sort of fin-like ruffle, ‘bout four iucnes in width, as though the cuticle of the animal had been drawn tightly over the belly and sides and pinned back, ufter the fashion of the day. 1 want you 'to see Dinsmore betore this thing joes uny further. 1 will say, howover, that I believe ston Was a little off, for an erect mode of progression is utterly incompatiole with the structure of a serpent, ‘Whose motion is effected by the mechanism of the ver- tebral columu and the multitudinous ribs which, like 60 many purrs of levers, euable it to move its body from place to place; cousequently, had the snakes Detore the fall moved in ay@ffect attitude, they must have been formed ona different plan altogether. But ' Bluce the fossil serpents hitherto found differ in no essential respects from modern representutives of the order, | must conclude that either Milton greatly erred or that his printer was drunk. I don’t believe the Serpent I saw was standing erect upon its feet, but that it Was wrapt in many coils be@eath the surtace of the water, and would probably measure 100 feet or more. e called upon William G. Dinsmore, at his drug store, No. 1,059 Broadway. We info:med our friend Dinsmore that we had understood he had ou the previous day seen ® sea serpent, and thut we wanted the particulars for an item, whereupon he yoluntecred a description of theanimal he had seen, and expressed himself as being satistied that it was nothing less than a real hve sea serpent, or whatever else such @ mammoth specimen of the snake species 1s called, It is but fair to say that Mr, Dinsmore is one of our pioncers and a most reputable citizen—a forty- niner, and a man who, when he talks, knows what he iuy about, and who doesn’t talk much tor fun. His ption of the serpent was essentially the same us that given by Colonel Wood, who, we afterward in- formed Mr. Dinsmore, had rst given us the item. THE PLAIN 'VIRW OF THE SERPENT that Mr. Dinsmore had was while it was swimming along with tho rapidity of a steam tug, near the old ferry landing, or Long Bridge. T. Price, in Louisville Courier-Journal] It is true that the French do not seem to be able to make a drinkable beer, and the English excel in ale and porter, preferring “a pot of small, for God’s sake,” like Timothy Sly ; but the American lager beer is perhaps better than the common German lager. On the whole, in the average, considering the vast variety they have, their beer is better; while their bock is incomparably the chief of all malt tiquors, ay soft and rich as cream; otherwise called doppel or double beer, on account of its strength, and March beer, because tapped only during a short season in March; and bock, from its trade mark of a goat, On the opening day of its tap- ing there is quite a carnival of drinking held at the Preworlen near’ the Kreutaberg, in Berlin; # tabulous number of tuns are consumed and thousands participate, A statement hus recently been made that over 17,000 peopie are arrested for drunken- ness in Berlin during the year.
