A new fifty cent note is issued because of the counterfeiting of the note. Still the mints are constantly making silver coin.’? Comptroller of the Currency Knox says that the Proceeding of the British banks of California in retus- ing to accept the notes of the gold banks has caused the gold banks to retire their circulation. The gold banks at Stockton, Cal. to-day retired $80,000 of their circulation. Concerning the threatened railroad combination to secure high rates for freight after the lake and canal navigation shall have closed, a Chicago financial re- view, assuming that the Baltimore and Obio Company will be @ party to it, gives, expression toa thought which has frequently appeared in the Huraxp, as fol- ows — Inquiries among leading bankers as to the business outlook for the winter were answered in decidedly | gloomy forebodings, Unless a decided advance occurs in foreign markets for grain and provisions sufficient to cover the extortionate advance in railway freights to | be enforced as soon as navigation closes, bankers and | business men look for very meagre shipments during the winter months. Grain especially will till our ware- houses to their utmost capacity, and the cribs aud graoaries in the country will remain unrelieved of their stores of food. Tnis effectual damming up of the chan- nels of trade by the Eastern ratlway ring must result and the supply of Europ, markets from other sources, and hence to immense damage to the entire mercantile aud farming interests of the West, To the insatiable greed of a hi 8 8 to pool their earnings and advance freights to the board to 86 centson wheat and aboat 34 cents on very soon to settle down upon her business and fnan- cial prospects. To tarn the attention of thoughttal men to the subject, and, if possible, find what they aro our jarmers must burn their corn, as they did but little more than two years ago, before the Baltimore and Ohio Railway reached this city, the sooner they know itand shut down ali expenses the better, They “should know the worst and provide for it,”” Mr. Reverdy Johnson, who sailed for Europe a day or two ago, has gone in the interest of Florida, being authorized by the Governor and the proper commis- siouers to sell three milhon acres of land, the proceeds of which are to be used in obliterating the public debt of that State, NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE SALES Tuxspay, Nov, 9, 1878 BEFORE CALI—10 A. The Standing Com. mittee on Sensations apparently failed to meet, and so little leaked out of their intentions that the eighth: hunters of the market had a poor day’s sport of it, ‘Ten years ago *‘All quiet along the Potomac” was & household phrase. We were all quiet in Stock Ex- change circles yesterday, except a dropping fire at long range between skirmishers or an occasional engage- ment of outposts. Once during the morning a Lake Shore battery was brought into action and succeeded in demolishing a wumber of shorts, but pluck or am- munition apparently fuiled the moment when viet was most utarly assured, and the fall of the stoc marked a retreat which at one time was nearly a dis- aster, There being uo stories, good, bad or indifferent touching other stocks, the interest of the market cen- tred upon Lake Shore, The Stock Exchange, like tho solar mM, requires its sun; the favorite stock of the day is the central orb, the brokers the revolving planets. Some invidious people, enemies of Wald peng might suggest that the figure of the moth and the candle was a more appropriate simile, Let tiem, suggest their acrimony is born of malice and failure, ke Shore being, therefore, the shining light of yess terday’s market, it brilliancy, gaining or waning, was» the chief subject of discussion, and the following ix avout the gossiv on the subject:— The previous upward movement having culminated. some days since by the realization of their holdings on. the ‘of the bull | operators, the stock was taken hold. of by a gentleman, recently a member of a prominent commission house, young, wealthy and ambitious, Some 20,000 shares were bought for isaccount on Mon- day and ‘about the same amount yesterday ; but with all. this support the price refused to materially advance, The why and the wherefore of this lethargy were finally discovered to moan that other operators, hoiders under the previous pool, had shrewdly avuiled’ themselves of the strong market and parted with their stock to the new Richmond jn the fleld. Some punsters wero cruel enough to remark that tho sales above referred to had: been prompted by sage principles, and others that the advance was mere!y « scalskin coat rise and that Del- monico’s lunch might affect for better or worse the market value of the great Lake Shore and Michigan: Southern Railroad. NEW JERSEY SOUTHERN RAILROAD. The first mortgige bondholders of the New Jersey Southern Railroad Company, Mr, William Walter Phelps: presiding, held a meeting at 120 Broadway yesterday to consider a plan for reorganization, The plan proposes a consolidation with other of the roads running through Southern New Jersey. The second mortgage bond- holders of the New Jersey Southern Railroad are to ex. change their bonds for common stock at par, the first mortgage bondholders are to buy in the New Jersey Southern Railroad, the purchase to be made by trustees appointed under the first agreement, and the reorgan- ization and consolidation to be carried out by a com- mittee appointed under the second agreement H Southern roads are not consolidated then the New Jer- sey ‘Southern Railroad is to be reorganized with the ‘| Long Branch and South Shore Railroad on the basis of the same figures at which they are to be represented in the consolidation; and lastly, the agreement for consol- idation is to continue in force until May, 1877, with liberty to all parties to extend the time further if proper. There was a good deal of opposition to this plan dur. ing the earher stages of the meeting, and a resolution was offered asking for its disapproval. Mr, T. 8, Fer- nan offered the regolution, and spoke in favor of ita adoption. He claimed that it was not for the interest of the bondholders to adopt any plan contemplating consolidation with any other road than such as are claimed to be covered by the first mortgage. The first mortgage for $2,000,000 on the New Jersey Southern Railroad covers that road from Port Monmouth, on th Raritan Bay, to Atco, on the Camden and Atlantic road; the branch railroad from Eatontown to Long Branch, and the branch from Manchester to Tom’s River. secure this mortgage the New Jersey Southern Railroad edged most of its capital stock we the stock of the Poo Branch and South Shore road, and all the stock of the Pemberton and New York branch. Mr, Jay Gould was president of the road when the default occurred, and Mr. Fernan claimed that it was his ( Gould’s) managoment that cansed its insolvency. On the 20th of May, ast he state: ecial report was made, ty panty Abram 8. Hewitt, Drake Smith, G. ‘orest, eaend and W. 0. Giles, accusing Mr. Gould of running the road into bankruptcy by the purchase of the Vineland and th Smyrna, Delaware and Kent roads, because theso roads are votd of merit and destitute of resources, For these reasons he thought the present plan should be re- jected. After considerable discussion, in the course of which Mr. Gould was made the subject of somo severe attacks, the motion of Mr, Fernan was rejected. Another motion that it was not for the interest of the first mortgage bondholders to adopt any plag including the consolidation of any other road than is claimed to be covered by the first mortgage, was adopted by a ma- Jerity of the number of persons present, but lost subse- quently when the votes were taken’ on the amount of stock possessed, Then many of the opponents | of the original pian, finding they could not prevent its adoption left, Subsequently tbe plan was adopted, and Messrs, G. M. Titus, Day, Bates and Stirling were ap- pointed trustees to represent the different parties in in- forest to proceed with the first part of the arrangement, Messrs. Day, William Walter Phelps, J. W. Stir- ling and C. W. Huvtington were next appointed ‘to or- ganize and conduct the new corporation, On motion it was to recommend the purchase ofa boat for the purposes of travel from the surplus funds in the hands of the Chancellor. After agroeing to an assessment of $7 60 on each bond of $800,000 we defray present ex- Ponses the meeting adjourned, To carry out the pro- posed plan the holders of $1,600,000 (par value) of the first mortgage bonds must agree to it., BUSINESS FAILURES, Jonathan R, Helfrick, whose failure was announced yesterday, stated his liabilities at $12,000, His nomi- nal assets aro $20,000, but only about one-third of that amount will be available. He thought it prudent to make an assignment in order to get at the exact con- dition of his affairs before Fepsmung, ‘The statement ia not yet completed. James Wickham & Son’s liabilities are about $10,000. Assets, $2,500, Tho firm has been doing business for twenty-five years. Salomon Meyer & Co. will soon be enabled to resume business, most of their creditors having already signed papers allowing them to do so, Messrs. Haight, Halsey & Co., whose suspension was mentioned in yesterday's Henao, hope within a short time to make such an arrangemont with their creditors ‘as to be able to resume. The cause of their troubles is stated to be the smali amount of sales and payments coming due rapidly. Thevr capital is estimated at about $750,000, They intend to pay dollar for dollar to their creditors and have asked an extension of time, Their Habilities have been set down at $250,000—thongh the exact figures are not yet ascertained—$100,000 of which are held by the banks in the shape of paper coming due, They claim to have sufficient real estate ‘and stock to pay all their Habilities and leave a surplus.
