Wat Steer, Weoxespay, Nov. 3-6 P. Beyond tho statement that th k market was ir- regular and feverish little is to be sald concerning the | events of the day. No perceptible influence could be | traced to the result of the election, and whatever de- cline oecurred was due to natural es, chief among which is the now generally recognized fact that the clique who have recently engineered inte prominence Lake Shore and Pacific Mail are engaged in realizing on the same at every opportunity, and giving everybody a chance to buy anywhere trom 61 to 623. A study of the list of transactions for the day will enable readers to judge how much ot the decline was due to this cause, THE RANGE OF PRICES was as follows:—Lake Shore opened at 6: €254, declined to 61%, reacted to 624 and closed at 61%. The effect was obsery- able in the heaviness of stocks. Subsequently, how- ever, the spasm passed away on the discovery that the banks were supplying funds at 5 per cent, their usual rates of late, and the murket closed easy at the last named figure. THE GOLD MARKET. It is impossible to give the reason—for buman fedginent even in the gold board is variable and mystifiea—why gold to-day declined from $1 15% to $1 15, though subsequently it recovered to $1 163, and closed at $1 1534. It is conceded that the re- sult of the elections must quench the expectations of those who predicted an inflation movement, and pos- sibly this thought bad something to do with the decline to-day. It is announced on the other hand, however, that the Treasurer has authorized the trans- fer ot $240,000, gold, from New York to San Fran- isco. Asimilar amount it is said will be shipped later in the week. The rates paid for carrying were 1, 2, 3, 2: and 4 percent. Poor ‘was yesterday examined before the Register in Bank- ruptey, with regard to the adjustment of certain out- standing accounts, In connection with the Clews frm Mr. Poor was formerly concerned in certain contracts for iron with the Utica and Elmira Railroad. Mr. Clews’ counsel claims that the amount due their client is $95,000, whereas the opposite party declare that their obligations are mach smaller, Mr, Clews was also ox- amined with reference to the accounts of the firm, and gave some unimportant testimony which did not o aps bearing upon any of the suits against the The examination in the case of Benjamin A. Cheever ig stated to be finished, and the counsel for Mr. Clewa will make a motion to ‘expunge the claim, no evidence of any weight having been brought forward by the other side. BROKERS’ COMMISSIONS, About a dozen brokers have been admonished by the Governing Committee of the Stock Exchange to ob- serve, with more strictness, the commission rules of the Exchange. The present rates provide for the pay- ment of 4 of 1 per cent on investment, byt out- siders; and by the same 44 on speculation, and 1-82 for business between members, with the right to charge 1-16 if stocks are carried over night. The infringe- ment complained of is this:—The members cautioned were believed to be trading in the market for outsiders. at 1-92 in connection with puts and calls, while the rules forbid the transaction of any business for outsiders under 3{. A suspension from the privileges of mem- bership and ultimate dismivsalf from the Exchange will, it is said, be the consequence of a repetition of this violation of the rules, A littio flurry was created yesterday among active Operators by the sudden advance of the money rate to Seven percent for call Joans. This hada tendency while it lasted, which was but for a very short time, to depress the market. The rate before the market closed went back to five per cent, at which figure it closed easily, The Treasury has authorized the transfer of $340,000 gold from New York to San Francisco, THE OCTORER CORAGR, By reference to the statement of the Director of Mints it will be found that the total value of the coin- age for the month of October is $6,785,240, aro distributed in the following manner:—! double eagles, value $4,305,020; 860,000; trade « value $860,000; subsidiary silver, 632,000 half dollars, value $260,000; 992,000" quartors, "value $248,000; 900,000 dimes, wort $00,000, and 1,620,000 cent pices, value $16,200. Should comage be continued at about this rate mouthly until 1879, to which period: specie resumption is deferred just now, the accumulae tion of coin would be sufficient to allow about $6 ip coin to every inhabitant of the United States. ‘The committee recently appointod by the Stock Ex- change in regard to monthly reports of corporation® whose securities are dealt in at the Exchange have communicated with several of the companies and are: preparing ® report on the subject given in charge to them. ‘The defeat sustained by Tammany and tle victory of the peoplo’s ticket were the subject of a good deal of gossip on the strect yesterday. Much as they had been prepared to see the new ‘“Boss’’ rebuked, tne com- Pleteness of his annililation was a surprise to them, The reported defeat of the granger Governor in Wis- consin, as the democratic candidate was termed, was used effectively yesterday to send up that class of Becu- Ticties known as “gran:er stocks.” There appeared to be a pretty general tendency to reatize at the advanced: Tates, however, and a reaction left those stocks as they were before the report circulated, CUSTOM HOUSE NOTES. General exultation reigned in the Custom House yes terday over the large republican gains, The all-prevail- ing topic of discussion was the political revolution till the Custom House closed, . Special Treasury Agents Brackett and Russell, of Colonel Howe’s office, seized yesterday morning 1,000 packages of smuggled cigarettes at the corner of Green- wich and Morris stree' They had been lately brought from a Havana steamer. The above mentioned officers: were assisted in making the seizure by Special Agen’ Fideau. Four hundred and twenty bundles of cigarettes ad 250 cigars, addressed George B. Shiels, che 896 Broadway, New York,” with the mark of. were seized on board the Alexandre steams! Havana, which had just arrived in this city Havana. Mr. Shiel’s property has on unfortunate habit of coming into the seizure room of the Custom House, for last November his store and house were emptied of about $1,500 worth of aby sy cigars and. cigarettes, which were seized by Special Treasury Agent rackett. The “sugar committee’? has now been in session about ten days, and has examined a number of 8 refiners and experts, Custom House Auaitor W. den, who represents the government in the oonaral nee told a Hemanp reporter last night that the commit would probably close its investigations by the end this week or the commencement of next, PRODUCE MATTERS, A phase of the reported “corner” in laed, which eul- minated on Saturday at the Produce Exchange, was be fore the Lard Committee yesterday, The “shorts,” not being able to fill thoir contracts on delivery day by a difference of more than 6,000 tierces, claimed that these contracts were “washed,” and wanted to make a settlement below the advanced rates, The ‘‘bulls,’” not willing to accept any such settlement, cited them to appear before the Lard Committee, where they claimed they could, if allowed to send for persons and papers, show that the contracts were not bona fide, A® the Arbitration Committee is the only one having power to send for persons and papers, the ‘shorts’ rotested against the settlement of the case by the d Committee, and the consequence is that the mat ter still remains unsettled. A NEW STEAMSHIP, THE TRIAL TRIP OF A NEW STEAMSHIP; Yesterday morning the new steamer City of Atlanta went out on her trial trip from the foot of Thirteenth street, East River, toand around the Sandy Hook Light” ship and back. The principal owners, Messrs. George: W. Quintard & Sons, were on board with a party of in- vited guests, Mr. John Cecil, Colonel Long, Mr. Joba Brower and Mr. Driegs were numbered among the lat- ter. Captain H. N.
