PRESIDENT JUHN ADAMS, WOMMEMORATION OF THE ONE HUNDRED AND FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BRIRTHDAY— THE ACADEMY WHICH NE FOUNDED IN QUINCY—ADDBESS BY CHARLES FRANCIS ADAMS AND OTHERS. Quixoy, Mass, Oct, 30, 1875. “Founder's Day” in Quincy has always been a day of pleasure to the citizens of that town, but of late years especially to the friends and students of the Adams Academy, who to-day commemorated the one hundred and fortieth anniversary of the birthday of President Jobn Adams, the founder of the institution, with an appropriate programme, The students and friends of the academy met in the recitation room of the building shortly before noon, where they were welcomed by Professor William R. Dimmock, of the institution. The building stood on ‘THE BIRTH SPOT OF JOIN HANCOCK and the site of the residence of Josiah Quincy, Jr, The ‘good work of the institution had only begun. A good school was not to be created in a day, or three years, But the academy had been favored beyond expectation, and was appreciated by the public. He trusted that the ‘school would be made as worthy as its founder destred tt to become for the thorough training of its pupils in ihe first stages of education preparatory for the more extended training of the university. The Professor closed by announeing that the festivi- ties of the day were to take place at the former hall, and the company formed in procession and, headed by the students, were escorted thither. On arriving at the hall, which was appropriately decorated with flags and bunting, the company, after the divine blessing had been invoked by the’ Rey, Samuel Kelly, of Quincy, partook of an elegant dinner, Afterward Professor ymmock, the president, made remarks in which he said he had attempted to enlogize the life, character and good works of the founder of the academy two years ago, but on the present occasion would leave it to ore able persons, He closed by submitting the toast “Our great founder, President John Adams,” and in- troduced é ‘THE “NON, CHARLBS FRANCIS ADAMS. ’? Mr. Adams referred to the fact that ay of all present or living none were possessed of more knowl- edge regarding the founder of the academy than hi self, he being the oldest descendant of tho President living. He gave a detailed history of the academy from the time of the presentation of the land for the pur- pose by the President to its successful opening three years ago. He referred to the ideas entertained by its founder when he first conceived it, He closed by ferring to the words of the President ee his appointment as Commissioner to England and Minister to Holland and France. As he sat down Mr. Adams proposed the heaith of the head of the academy, and the sentiment was received w th great applause, The Hon, Josiah Quincy was introduced, He said that he was witness of the three important deeds by which Mr, Adams gave the property to the town of Quincy on which now stands the beautiful and con- venient pulling iiae 18 now used for the purposes of the academy. je then read extracts from his journal concerning the execution of the three deeds, which con- veyed to the town of Quincy thetr acts of land and THE LIBRARY OF THE PRESIDENT, Continuing, he said that John Adams, when he knew him, was a remarkably handsome man, and he re- tained both his physical and mental powers to a very advanced age, Alter relating several incidents of his intercourse with President Adams, Mr. Quincy gave a sketch of the changes which modern discovery had in- troduced since the death of President Adams, remark- ing.that 1t was scarcely possible that the next half cen- tury could show go great an advance in human knowl- elge. He concluded by saying that conceptions of man’s accountability to God and duty to his country have not materially bettered since the days of John Adams, who by founding the academy sought to per- petuate an atmosphere of high and patriotic ideas in his native town. Mr. Quincy Was followed by President Eliot, of Harvard College, and others, + CRUELTY TO CHILDREN. MEETING OF THE SOCIETY FOR ITS PREVENTION, & meeting of (he Board of Managers of the New York Society for tNe Prevention of Cruelty to Children was held at the rooms of the society, No. 860 Broadway, yesterday afternoon, Benjamin H. One of the worst cases was that of Franky Hughes, a little boy seven years old, At the examination four witnesses testified that this boy’s father beat him with x cane, threw him on the stone pavement, severely cutting his face and injuring his left eye so ‘as to dis- igure him for life, Not sausfied with this he threw the child into a barrel of water, nearly drowning him, After the reading of the Secretary’s report and transaction of a large amount of routine business, including the appointment of a committee to confer with the Commissioners of Charities and Correction as to the children on Randall's Island and the election of thirty new members, the meeting adjourned until the first Monday in Deceinber. : WORK FOR THE CORONERS.
