FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Our Exports and Imports—The Lessons They Teach—The Baneful Effect of Rag Money. REVIEW OF THE MARKET. Gold Steady and Tending Upward—Stocks, with Vevy Few Exceptions, Lower—Govern- ment and Railroad Bonds Firm. Wan Srrerr, Sunpay, Oct, 81, 1875, ‘As time rolls on each passing day and month pre- souts new reasons why it is a prime necessity to the recuperation of the prosperity of our country that there shall be a speedy return to the use of that “money” which, in its nominal value, represents the actual or approximate value of the labor expended in its production. Until that day shall come, or be made reasonably certain in thenear future, speculation will continue to hold in its control all the legitimate inter. ests of the couutry, One week ago we attempted to show the effect of our ‘-unexportable” money upon the grain movement during the past year; Recorder Hackett says:—“If there exists an office which more than any other one should be utterly divorced from political considerations it is that of a clerk: or deputy cleric of @ criminal court,” that the great plethora of rag currency had enabled speculation to lock up our crops and hold them at an unexportable price, and that it is now repeating the folly of one year ago, thus holding in check real capital, the free circula- tion of which is of vastly more importance to the busi- ness of the country than is that of money itself, The position then maintained has since been strongly forti- flod by the report from the Chief of the Bureau of Sta- tistics, giving THK FOREIGN TRADE OF TI COUNTRY for the nine months ending September 30, 1875. Tho totals of our exports and imports, all reduced to a gold valuation, for the period named, compare with the cor- responding months of 1874 as follow: Domestic merchandise, Foreign merchandise +H 895, 062 Total gold value of m’d’s« $419,053,140 $360,061,679 Specie and bullion... 51,710,480” 69,946,425 Totals » $470, 768,028 $429,405,104 ———Importa 1874. + 187, Merchandise, +++ $442,236,400 $398,303,555 Specie..... 10,832,190 ~ 16,411,888 Totals... $459,068,590 $414,720, 443 ‘The foregoing statistics show that the gold value of our exports of merchandise is decreased by $58,991,489, against a decreased value of merchandise imported of only $43,927,845, and that there is a net increase in the export of specie and bullion, after deducting the amount imported, of $12,056,274. Also that the appar- ent balance of trade in our favor for the nine months of 1875 is $14,687,661, against $17,695,038 in 1874. But it must be remembered that this apparent balance is fictitious, owing to the large amount of our government, State, municipal and ‘corporate bonds and stocks owned abroad, all of which demand and draw in annual inter- est and dividends a sum not estimable yet ora sum that runs far up among hundreds of millions, the re- sult of which is to transfer the balance to the other side of the ledger to a very large amount, witnout tak- ing into account the principals of these various securi- ties. While the foregoing facts and deductions are anything but satiefactory they are full of SUGGESTIVE THOUGHTS. They demonstrate that as a people we have made Kit- tle or no progress in the necessary work of liquidation, that our imports of foreign merchandise have contin- ued on an extravagant scale, notwithstanding that dur- Ing the same period our own manufacturing interest has largely curtailed its productions and is com- pelled to sell even that which it has pro- ducea at no profit, and in many cases at a beavy loss. But for the pure “cussedness” of our paper currency system—our ‘“unexportable” money— could such a state of affairs have existed? Had gold been the ‘money’ of the country would not a large portion of that $69,346,425 which we have exported in specie have been supplied by those articles of which we now read in one of the weekly reviews of ‘the markets as follows:—-“-The speculative ‘corners? in cotton, pork and Jard have been maintained with vigor in spite of mauy opposing inijuences, and the prices of these staples for Octover delivery have been forced to abnor- mal figures.’ Concerning hese also another reporter of Saturday's ma closes higher and un lative. firmly but is neglected.”’ 1t is a noteworthy fact that while the prices here of all the articles named above dur- ing the past week made a considerable advance for spot deliveries, at Liverpoo! there has been an actual decline in cotton, lard and wheat and an advance in pork. Whence came the “vigor” above referred to but from the plethora of our “unexportable” money, which would remain easy of secess to the rich, though every dollar of goid should leave the country? In view of the experience of the past two years, and of the additional Iight which each passing day now throws upon the subject of the “currency,” it seems like the assertion of an axiom—as simple as that two and two make four—to say that an irredeemable paper currency no longer inflates with pure air the lungs of legitimate business or honest labor, but is slowly producing strangulation and death, The same forces heretofore referred to as affecting the speculation in the various products have, during the past week, been also applied wo the demand chiefly spocu- Shippers are out of market. Winter is held THE STOCK MARKET with more or less of success, The stock speculator, how- ever, has an advantage over his neighbor at the Corn Exchange, in this, that, owing to the secrecy now ob- served by the m ol nearly all the corporations whoge stocks muxe up the speculative list, it isan easy matter to set ailoat at the proper moment a statement bout improved busin increased rates, new com- binations, &¢., &c., which, having served their purpose in auping their , are as quickly forgotten or displaced by new and contradictory stories. The week opened with quite a builish fever, which for a time ex- tended to the entire list, but later reacted, leaving Lake hore and Racific Mail, the only pointsof alteration, so ‘hat @ majority of stocks show no material improve- ment upon the prices of one week ago. Iu fact many of them show a decline, In regard to the much dis- cussed advance in the rates of transportation—an event a quite likely to occur, as it always has done, when navigation closes—it seems to be but natural to suppose that whenever tho business offering to the roads shail warrant an advance in rates it will take place quietly and without any flourish of trumpets, Under such circumstances the change will be more likely to be permanent. Any spasmodic movement Recorder Hackett says:—“F have been Recorder nearly eight years, and I have never before received any such intimation, even by implication.” of the kind, however, which ia first only heralded jn epeculutive circles is pretty certain to be merely for the purpose of aiding speculation, and jg not at alli to Inst, Without entering into details the following tablo in connection with the closing prices will ex. plain, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES OP THE WEEK. ‘The following table shows the extreme fluctuations for the week in the leading share Lowest, Highest. {0 New York Central..... daritw trie Erie preferred Lake Shore, 6 084 Northwestern pri 52 50 Rovk Island Ga 104 | ° 3 Wiwaukee and St, Paul preterred.. 624 Pittsburg. . 90 89%, Delaware, Lackawanoa and Wostern.. 118% 11845 New Jersey Central + 100), 106 Michigan Central... » 68 61 Uiinois Central... 4K 92 Oy 64M 4% 434 Mi 1asg iibal and St. Joseph preferred. 2 pond Obio aud Mississippi. io ‘anaina, pow Pacitle.. exiarn Uniea... Government bond dealers, how- ever, have borrowed on call as low as2 percent. A fair business was done in commercial paper, strictly prime paper ruling at about 6 a 64g per cent, The bank statement of the week exhibits a satisfactory gain tn the surplus reserve. It is to bo observed, however, that the increase in the average is caused by a large influx of gold from the Treasury and other operations ineidental to the work of the Syndicate, The foreign exchanges were irregular. At the opening rates were advanced to 4.8044 for bankers’ long and 4,85 for de- mand sterling. ‘The free offerings of cotton bills and the squeeze in cash gold, however, caused a heavy fecling, and rates were reduced to 4.78 and 4.8244, with actual business as low as 4.76 and 4.51, At the close demand bills were advanced to 4.83, THR GOLD MARKET. Gold, which in the boginning of the week had de- clined to 11434, recovered later, and on Thursday sold up to 1164%, the improvement being stimulated by the report of the destruction of Virginia City and the possi- ble interruption for two or three months of the usual supply of bullion from California in consequence of the financial disturbance caused on the Pacific coast by this event. Yesterday the price temporarily receded to 115%, but quickly rallied, and Recorder Hackett says:— ‘<uen vf disposed to throw open the books and records of the Court toa politician I could not do it, because the deputy clerk is not appointed by the Judges of the Court of General Sessions.” the market closed at 116%. The temper of the operators is generally bullish if one may judge from the prevailing expressions, but there are as yct no signs of a clique, though the same may be developed at any time from the known scarcity of the commodity and the ability of a few bold capi- talists to keep it under control, The tollowing were tho GOLD FLUCTUATIONS POR THE WEEK :— Opening.
