The inflationists, however, represented in this instance by the demo- cratic party, have been squarely defeated, not- ‘withstanding the fact that the republicans were Ibandcuffed by Grantism and its connecting imbecilities vand corruptions, The battle has been fought with all ‘the advantages of position in favor of the inflationists, ‘yet they are beaten, It isa fact which, while it casts va ray of sunlight upon all legitimato business, is still a ‘warning to speculators, and a suggestion that they weed no longer look for fictitious values wherewith to wetrieve the folly or imprudence of the past THR STOCK MARKET, ‘The general average of prices compared with those of yesterday indicates firmness, but itis not of that charac- ster which invites confidence. The transactions of the day vere comparatively small and the changes insignificant, he leaders were Lake Shore, Western Union and Erie, Ohio and Mississippi were more than usually active, ‘and an-advance took place from 1614 to a7, but theclose ewas made at 1634, Missouri Pacific ended at 155% a 16, after eales at 174 1534016, Western Union sola at “4X a TAY, a 7454. During the after- noon the rates for actual business wore 4.7634 a 4.77 for Aankers’ long sterling, and 4.8014 a 4.81 for demand, DRY GOODS IMPORTS. The imports of dry goods at this port for the week ending to-day were $1,917,028, and the amount mar- keted $2,051,015, The total imports of dry goods at this port since January 1, this year, are $88,266,734, and Abe total amount marketed $88,540,656.
