PONED—THE WESTERN UNION REPORT aWAl~ YZED—LAKE SHORE AND THE NEW WESTERW ROUTES TO CHICAGO. ‘The conference committee, which was to have met yesterday at the office of the Atlantic and Pacific Ratk road Company inreference to tho affairs of the Pa ciflo Railroad of Missouri, did not meet, in conse quence, it 1s asserted, of the illness of two of the mem bers who were unable to confer until Saturday next ‘The criticisms-on the company are still freely indulged in in Wall street, and if the courts do not havo some- thing to say about the late seandalons proceedings it will not be because all the stock and bondholders are satisfled with the report and the passing of the divi- dend. ‘THE WESTERN UNION REPORT came in fora fair share of criticism. ‘For instance,’* said one stockholder to the Heratp representative, “the company claim that their capital stock 18 $41,073 410. The statement stands about in this wiso:— Capital... ...$41,073,410 at 8 por cen! Ono face tion asserts that Commodore Vanderbilt has sold out his holdings, and that now his friends and followers are giving the street all they will carry. The news rang that the Commodore is throwing all tho business of the West into the hands of the Michigan Central and Canada Southern roads. The new arrangements of the Erie Railroad fora through business to Chicago were i consequence of a quarrel in reference to the runnin, the Wagner cars over the Erie route to Chicago, Sire Vanderbilt is said to be a large nolder of the Wagnot palace car stock, and as HE 18 A PERSISTENT BULL in every enterprise in which he engages he forced th Michigan Central and Canada Southern to adopt his plans, and thus he leaves Eriejaud Lake Shore out in the cold, The new Erie line taps the Toledo and Wabash Railway at Defiance, fifty-two miles from Toledo, and it is hkely that an arrangement will be mado with the Jatter company to renew its through I:ne, and to give to the Erie all the through traffic along its road. The Baltimore and Ohio Company will also hand over all their New York clientéle to the Erie Railway. It is also understood that the Great Western and Grand Trunk Railroads mean to make war on the Michigan Centra! and New York Central if the latter two ronda will give, as it is rumored, the bulk of their business to the Canada Southern. “The Canada Southern rung Wagner's sleeping-cars, the same as the Michigan Cen- tral and New York Central, aud the Great Western and Grand Trunk roads the Pullinan ears. The two daily trains run by the Erie Company will consist almost en- tirely of Pullman cars, and each train is to havo a hotel car attached, These will be the only through hotel trains between this city and Chicago, Tho terminal facilities at the latter point are also to be greatly im- proved, THE GOLD MARKET yesterday was rampant in obedience to the lat imands for coin, the great bids for government f° old and the news from ‘Ohio, which left the election of Hayes in doubt. Atone timo 116% was bid for the precioug metal and street transactions were on an unusually large seale. An eighth of one per cent was charged for one day for the use of every $10,000 gold, and merchanta who were short were terribly squeezed. Tho ‘Gold Grabbers” are at work again. Let the merchants and legitimate traders beware of their machinations, THE CITY FINANCES. do- THE COMPTROLLER MOUNTING HIS HOBBY OF ECONOMY AGAIN. An adjourned mecting of this Board was held at the Mayor's office yosterday. Mayor Wickham, Comp- troller Green, Alderman Lewis and Tax Commisionor Wheeler were present. Alderman Lewis called up the resolution authorizing the Comptroller to issue $250,000 of Croton water stock: in accordance with the law of 1872. Corporation Counsel Whitney had previously sent in an opinion to the Board in which he certified as to its powers in authorizing the issue. Comptroller Green remarked he had not an opportun« ity of examining the opinion, and suggested that the mattor should lie over until the next meeting, After some short debate this course was adopted. ‘Aresolution was passed permitting the Firo Departs ment to purchase 20,000 feet of hose after advertising for proposals in the usual way. Comptroller Green read a communication which he had just received trom the Park Department, asking for the ‘issue of “City Park Improvement stock” to the amount of $100,000, Consideration of the subject was Jaid over until the next meeting. Mayor Wickham called up for adoption the resolution asking for an issue of $100,000, deemed necessary at thia time for the purchase of land “and other necessary ex- nsos to be incurred im the removal of aqueduct gate ouses near 119th and 135th streets, and the waste weir at 142d street. This work is to be done by authority of the Jaws of 1875, and the gates and weir are to be re- placed by structures ontside the boundaries of the avenues. An opinion of the Corporation Counsel was received deciding in favor of the laws passed bearing upon those points. Commissioner Porter, who waa present at the mecting, gave his ideas as to the neces- sity for carrying out the work without delay, Comptroller Green expressed his conviction that the whole work could be accomplished at two thirds the cost proposed in the plan of the Department of Publi¢ Works. He wanted the matter laid over for future cons sideration. He also wished to know by whom the draft of the law was made which was sent to the Logislature, Commissioner Porter answered that the draft had been made by Mr. Tracy and submitted to the Corporation Counsel. ‘Alter some discussion on the necessity of the work farther action was postponed, and the Board adjourned to Tuesday next. THE FIFTH AVENUE BANK. On Wednesday morning business was begun at the now Fifth Avenue Bank, at the corner of Fifth avenue and Forty-fourth street, Such an institution in that locality has long been needed by the numerous wealthy inhabitants of the neighborhood. The establishment of the bank was s0 much desired that no difficulty was found in placing the stock, Indeed, a few capitaliste expressed their readiness to take it all. Some of the strongest moneyed men of New York figure om j the subscription list.
