10 ‘POINT BREEZE PARK. Second Day cf the Fall Trot- ting Meeting. Billy Ray the Winner of the 2:31 Purse, and the 2:26 Race Postponed After Four Heats. Purrapenpmta, Pa., Oct 13, 1875. ‘The second day of the falbtrottmg meeting at Point Breeze Park was far more successful than the first. The weather was of that nature ag to render a prolonged stay upon the grounds not unpleasant, while the track was in fair condition and the attendance large, Many carriages were in the field and the club house balcony contained a liberal sprinkling of handsomely dressed ladies, There were two races on the programme—the’| first for horses of the 2:31 class, which was won in three straight heats by the roan gelding Billy Ray. The re sult was entirely unexpected by the fraternity of betting men, and they lost heavily by the defeat of the chestnut gelaing Lookout. Billy Ray showed such a burst of speed and cut down his competitors so cleverly in the third heat that much attention was given him by horsemen generally. He is owned by Mr N. G. Ray, of Knoxville, Pa, is seven years old, sixteen hands high, and was sired by Wood's Hambiletonian, dam a» New York Black Hawk mare. ‘The second event was the 2:26 purse, which, after four heats, was postponed until to-morrow. The first heat was won by Ella Madden in 2:263%, then Joe Brown was sredited with the second and third in 2:27% and 2:294¢, when Nellie Walton captured the fourth in 2:30. There is much money in the box on this raee, and it would not be surprising to see Annie Collins come to the front upon the renewal of the contest and mix mat- ‘ers still worse, as there 1s no doubt that she possesses agreat turn of speed and has staying qualities of the first-order. ‘THE 2:31 PURSE. ‘The first event on the programme was the purse of 62,000, for horses that never trotted better than 2:31; mile heats, three in five, in harness; $1,000 to the first, $500 to the second, $300 to the third and $200 to the “ourth horse. Of thirteen entries there came to the wore N. G Ray’s roan gelding Billy Ray, J. P. Gilbert's black mare Little Dorrit, Mike Carroll's black gelding General, J. H. Phillips’ bay gelding Jericho (formerly Sleepy Jerry), M. H. Whipple’s chestnut gelding Look- eat, A. A. Snyder’s chestnut stallion Andrew, W. M. Hughes? sorrel mare Little Mary and J. H. Goldsmith’s brown mare Lottie, Before the start the pools aver- aged:—Lookout, $100; Billy Ray, $45; field, $75. The vord was given at the third trial, with General the best of it, Billy Ray second and the rest well together. Seneral kept his advanced position until the half-mile pole was reached, when Billy Ray went to the front, ind passed under the wire the winner of the heat by me length in 2:31. General was second, Little Mary third, Andrew fourth and the others as per summary. Pools now averaged :—Billy Ray, $110; field, $100. A vollision between the sulkies of Andrew and Gen- wal, resulting in the breaking of the latter, caused con- tuerable delay. At the sixth trial they got away, with Jericho two lengths in front, Andrew weond, Billy Ray third and the others tlosely following in a bunch. Ray took the deadon the torn, and at the quarter pole was four tengths abead of Jericho, Little Mary third and the rest strung out in Indian file. From thts point Billy Ray had it all his own way, and passed under the wire the winner of the heat by seven lengths in 2:30%. Little finished second, but was placed third for running, Andrew being given ‘second position, the rest as per summary. Billy Ray was the favorite,4 to 1 over the field) The word was given toa miserable start, Lookout being two Jengths in front and the favorite among those in the rear. On the turn Lookout drew away five lengths, and at the quarter pole had % as he pleased. Billy Ray here left his aoe being caught, dropped back last, where he remained until the half-mile pole was feached, with Lookout leading six ogy Here Ray had settled, and, being called w is driver, began picking them up one after anot! a tntil at the three- quarter pole he had collared Lookout, and Little Dorrit challenging for the lead a grand tussie ensued be- three. Dowh the stretch the fight con- one of the best strnggles ever seen on any track ended with Billy Ray going under the wire the tras second, Litte Mary third, Andrew fourla, Latta ttle Andrew fourth, Litue Dorris ‘fifth, General sixth, Lottie seventh and Jericho eighth. Andrew was awarded sccond money, General third and Lookout fourth. THe 2:26 RACE. Of the nine entries seven responded to the bell, these being Daniel Jenkins’ gray stallion Joe Brown, J. H. Phillips’ bay mare Elia Madden, John Trout’s bay stallion Sir Will- iam Wallace, Jobn L. Doty’s bay gelding Barney Kell: W. E, Weeks’ ding Royal George, Ben Mace’s N won and W. H, Crawiord’s brown First Heat,—The pools averaged—Nellic Walton, $50; Joe Brown, $30; field, $47. At the fifth scoring the word was given, with Madden a trifle the best of it Barney Kelly second, Sir William Wallace third an the rest well up. Around the turn Barney Kelly showed in front, and at the quarter pole, in 3644 sec- suds, was two lengths in advance, Madden second, Sir Willian third, Nelile Walton fourth, Joe Brown fifth, Royal George sixth and Aunie Collins last. Along the packsteetch Ella Madden challenged Kelly for the lead and afver a sharp tuasie collared hin at the hali-mile pole, which they passed head and head in 4:12%%. Sir William Wallace was third at this point, Nellie Walton fourth and the others as tefore.
